Boasting over 80,000 climate-controlled squarefeet, this state-of-the-art automobile showroom opened in 2010 and houses up to 350 collectible vehicles, ranging from antiques, streetrods, muscle cars and trucks, to the latest exotics. Join us at 1:00 for our regular chapter meeting followed by a tour of this awesome showroom! Spingtime is almost here! It s been a long cold winter and I for one am ready for warmer weather and spring activities, especially upcoming Dixie Olds Club activities and car show season in general. While I drive my Oldsmobiles almost weekly as weather permits, I still love taking that road trip to a local car show or one of the many Oldsmobile events such as Oldsmar Days, Homecoming, the Nationals and The Gathering. It s a lot of fun to be out on the open road in one of my Cutlasses or the Alero. One of the neatest of those trips was my return home from the National meet in Kingsport in Two good friends of mine, Gary and Scott Campbell from the Denver, CO area, who also attended the Nationals caravaned with me from Kingsport back to my home in LaFayette, GA on the Sunday after the event. It was about a four hour drive and the caravan consisted of my 1973 Cutlass S, followed by Gary in his and Scott in his 1970 Cutlass Supreme Convertible. We were quite a sensation among other motorists on interstate highways and at gas stops along the way. After all, how often do you see three early 70s model Oldsmobiles traveling down the road together? In addition to the local sights of my hometown, we visited the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park where we saw the Fuller Gun Collection. The largest collection of antique firearms in the United States. We also briefly visited Chattanooga, TN with stops at Coker Tire and the original Moon Pie store. Chattanooga is where the famous marshmallow pie treat originated and is the only place where you can buy Moon Pies that are baked fresh that same day. You can also buy a Royal Crown cola there. For those that were raised in the South, you know you can t have a Moon Pie without washing it down with an RC! LaFayette is a small town with a Mayberry type atmosphere. That is especially true at Dale Wilson s Pure Service Station where an attendant still comes out and pumps your gas. Or you can fill er up yourself at a self service pump. It s one of the few remaining gas stations that still offers ethanol free gas pumped from a 1970 s Continued on Page 2

2 Rocket Review President s Message (Continued from Page 1) era gasoline pump. After you finish serving yourself you walk in and tell the attendant the dollar amount you pumped and pay. The honesty system still works great here! The day Gary and Scott left for Denver I took them by to gas up. It was quite nostalgic and a scene not unlike what you would have seen at any service station 40 plus years ago. It was a fun trip and my Denver friends still talk about it today. Speaking of events, your Dixie Olds Board members have been busy planning a fabulous line up of events for you this year. We have visits planned to the Phoenix and Fenders car show, Streetside Classics, a tour of the Cofer Collection, Year One tour and Gateway Classics. We are planning our annual picnic again and of course The Gathering all Oldsmoible show. We will also be attending the BOPC. The schedule with details can be found in this edition of the newsletter. We hope to see many of you at some or all of these events so start shining up those Oldsmobiles and get them road worthy! I ll be looking for you and in the meantime I hope to see you on the road in your Oldsmobile! 3 Rocket Review Dixie Olds Club Burns Rubber into 2018 with 25 Members & Guests in Attendance at First Chapter Meeting of the Year! On February 3, 2018, we held our first meeting of the new year. It was an AWESOME turnout with some 25 members and guests in attendance! What a treat for everyone who was able to make it there were familiar faces and new members in attendance and everyone had a great time getting to know each other, enjoying lunch, and getting our year off to a great start! Those attending included Amy Becham and Paul Becham, Andy and Caroline Youe & godson Allan Barcenas, Bob Childers, Bob Snider, Dennis and Marylou Markakis, Doug Williams, Ed Williams, Jay Mancin, Jeff Lowenerg, Jerry Hicks, Joe and Debbie Fotschky, John Roney, Jon Potvin, Pat Durbin (guest and member of GA Cool Cruisers), Red and Carol Morse, Richard and Virginia Stewart, Robert Climer, and Stefan Bartelski. 4 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT A few sightings of our members getting g involved with interesting events! Bob Snider, our club Secretary, had an exciting New Year s just a few weeks ago, he and his son Justin were able to take an Amazon River cruise that originated in Iquitos, Peru! This amazing event started on December 31 and went through January 4 and featured opportunities to observe all kinds of wildlife and vegetation along the Amazon River in South America. The mother ship could accommodate 25 passengers and a number of daily excursions were conducted in a smaller motor boat. Along the way, Bob and Justin saw monkeys, parakeets, sloths, caymans (aka alligators), dolphins, manatees, ocelots, parrots, iguanas, and Rocket Review a wide variety of birds. They also visited several local villages and were allowed to hold their pet 3-toed sloths and an anaconda! They fished for piranhas, which were cleaned, cooked and eaten onboard the big ship Piranhas have a sweet, white meat taste to them, Bob adds. On one night excursion, they caught and held a small cayman and later took a trek through the jungle to get a close up view of the vegetation. Bob and his son had a blast and would recommend it to everyone and stated that the accommodations and food on board were excellent. We just recently welcomed our first new members of the new year Scot and June Swanson who make their home in Kennesaw, GA and can be spotted in a beautiful, 1968 Olds Cutlass. 5 Rocket Review Membership Has It s Benefits! Dixie Olds Club to Publish Member Directory and Distribute Member Name Badges After several months of cleaning up member profile information, we are ready to move forward with a club directory. All paid, new and returning members will receive a digital copy of the directory. As of this date, we have 87% of our active membership up to date with their 2018 dues payments. Anyone who has not yet paid their 2018 dues will be included in the directory but will not receive their copy until their 2018 dues are paid. If you re not sure of your status, please Amy Becham at amybecham@mindspring.com to get the details on your membership and to make arrangements to be included in the directory. As an extra bonus, the Club will be purchasing very nice, plastic name badges for all paid members and their designated spouse or family member listed on the membership. Please be on the lookout for a proof of your name to be ed out in the near future. This will be your only chance to review/correct your name for your badge. If we do NOT hear from you, your name and info will be assumed correct and produced. Any corrections to badges after production will be at the members expense.
