2 Letter From the Editor I hope you were able to attend our last meeting. Reminiscent of the old Orinda days with 13 members in attendance! We should arrange to have special presentations more often. This evening Seth brought in a few DVDs to show. Current SFBA Corsa Officers President Tony Richards, PO Box 765, Mill Valley, CA (415) Lonetree12@yahoo.com Vice-President Harry Kypreos, 7840 Creekside Dr, Dublin, CA HKypreos@epicor.com Secretary Treasurer Clark Calkins, 1907 Alvarado Ave., Walnut Creek, CA (925) CaCalkins@astound.net Fred Garrity, 113 Alamatos Drive, Danville, CA Committees Membership Harry Kypreos (address above) Two of the DVDs focused on the new C7R Corvette (the racing version of the newest C7 Corvette). Of particular interest (to me at least) was the radar system that let the driver know about approaching traffic. This allows the driver to concentrate on looking ahead and not to check the rear-view mirror. Because the body is made of carbon composite (not fiberglass as in the production cars) a special opening had to be cut in the back to allow radar to penetrate. It was glassed over so you couldn't tell. Interesting technology that we will see in our cars shortly! Library Newsletter Dave Newell, 1481 Hamrick Lane, Hayward, CA (510) Clark Calkins (address above) Editor At Large Tony Richards (address above) Refreshments Internet Web Ed Rodrigues, 1702 Nelson St, San Leandro, CA (510) CaCalkins@astound.net The other DVD showed Jay Leno's Stinger. Stingers were produced in the '60s by Don Yenko (Yenko Sportscars, Inc) using late model Corvair Monzas or Corsas. Various power levels were available from 160 to 240 HP. Interestingly the coupes had extra bracing by the rear windows presumably to reduce body flexing. Jay seemed particularly fond of his '66 model and described the restoration process in much detail. The previous owner had kept extensive paper work. (see Letter... on page 5) On The Cover: I thought this was a nice picture of the "shop" we are using to rebuild the 1964 Spyder Coupe in Napa. They let me use one corner of a hangar, but still have to store airplanes as well. This is a Cessna Citation Sovereign saying hello to our Corvair corner (more photos on page 5). - Rob Massari, Director of Operations, Napa Jet Center The Spyder Web is published twelve times a year by SFBA Corsa, Chapter 947 of the Corvair Society Of America (CORSA). The group meets monthly on the first Thursday at 7:00 PM at Denny s in Danville except for special occasions. Membership costs $25/yr (membership in CORSA, $38/yr, is encouraged). An associate membership (newsletter only) is avialable for $15/yr. Memberships begin on January 1 of each year (first year is prorated until September). Advertising space in the Spyder Web is available for $50/yr (1/4 page), $75/yr (1/2 page), and $100/yr (full page). Business card size ads are $25/yr but do not include a subscription to the newsletter. All material should be sent to the editor (address above) or ed to CorsaNews@Bigfoot.com. Material must be received at least two weeks prior to the next meeting date. USE OF MATERIAL: Written permission from the Editor is required for all original material for any use other than reprinting in a Chartered CORSA Chapter newsletter. Permission must be sought in advance for material reprinted herein. page 2 SFBA Corsa - May 2014
3 Minutes of the Last Meeting May 1, 2014 The meeting was called to order at 7:20 by President Tony Richards. We had thirteen members and no guests this evening. A special tonight will be a couple of DVDs brought by Seth. Minutes were accepted as published in the last Spyder Web. Treasurers Report: Neither Fred nor Clark had remembered to bring a copy of the bank statement. Looking it up later the bank balance was $ Membership: No new members. Tony paid his dues and now we are all paid up. A couple of members did not renew and Harry will contact them to see if they intended to drop out or just forgot. Old Business: The Capital City Spring Fling car show was last weekend. Several members went. Seth said it poured rain on Friday but was nice on Saturday and Sunday. He was the speakers at the Saturday night dinner. Walt only went on Saturday. He reported on 2 Rampsides with very nice camper shells. He asked the owner about the shells and was told that they were custom made years ago. A gentleman he knew agreed to make the campers for $600 each if the owner would buy five. He quickly lined up the necessary orders and the campers got made. Walt said they were very good. In all there were four Rampsides (one with a Cadillac V-6) but no Greenbriars or Corvans. Walt noticed a '64 convertible with disk brakes. They came from a Chevy Razor pickup he found out. There was also a nice '61 Lakeside. The crowd seemed larger than last year. As for vendors, Corvair Underground was there (yes they are still in business but only through the internet). Seth sold two stacks of Corvair Wire Wheel hub caps to someone off the street. He reminded them that they were for 13" wheels. Walt left on Saturday and stopped by the Hays Antique Truck & Tractor museum in Woodland. But the truck section had been moved to Reno. On Sunday Seth went to the California Auto Museum. Good display but no Corvairs. The guest speaker on Friday night was from the museum and did apologize for not having a Corvair to display. It seems that 2/3 of their cars are on loan and no one with a Corvair had lent them one. Tony said that he offered a few years back to lend them one of his but he never heard back and didn't pursue it. New Business: Tony suggested that the July meeting be put off until the 10th to avoid the Holiday. Everyone was in agreement with this. Buck Jones will be going to the National Convention in July and will be towing a 32' box trailer. He has very generouslyoffered to haul parts to the Convention for people (clean parts that are not too heavy please). He will be taking some stuff but has plenty of extra room. If you want him to sell the parts then everything has to be marked with your price (he won't have time to Treasurers Report May 2014 Fred Garrity Checking Acct. Cash/Checks Beginning Balance $ $00.00 Income Expenses (none) (none) haggle). Buck, who lives in the Monterey area, will be driving through our locale the week before the Convention (he may be able to time this with our June meeting). If you would be interested give him a call at (831) Tech: Paul is having a problem with Lu's car (which he bought a few years ago). After a short drive, it starts detonating and missing badly. Doesn't quit but will barely run. Sounds like it's running out of gas but Paul has check the fuel pump, rebuilt the carbs, new coil, wires, and points. Checked the fuel filters. He has done everything he can think of. What could be causing this? Swap and Sell: Seth brought in a box of parts that didn't sell in Sacramento. Side view mirrors, bumper guards, vacuum advance units, etc. Most went quickly. Ben Mozzetti has sold almost all of his Corvairs. He only has a Loadside remaining. Respectfully submitted, Clark Calkins, secretary Ending Balance $ $00.00 SFBA Corsa May 2014 page 3

5 Letter... Walt, Seth, Tony and maybe others went to the Capital City Spring Fling in Sacramento. Walt took the photos you will see on pages 6-7. Thanks to Seth, Harry, and Ed for bringing the equipment. It sure is great to see this many people show up. It makes for a very enjoyable evening. Our next meeting will be held at Denny's in Danville again on June 5th. But the July meeting date has been postponed until July 10th (rather than the 3rd) to avoid the July 4th Holiday. And it s not too early to think about by our Annual SFBA/ Valley Picnic at Quarry Lakes Park in Fremont on Saturday, August 9th that replaces our August meeting. More details in coming newsletters. There are a couple of pictures below to prove that Corvairs do show up for the meetings! Here are a couple more photos of Rob s project cars and the wonderful work area he has available.
