Photovoltaics working party The erection of a photovoltaic system often requires major intervention in the electrical infrastructure of a building. This is reflected in the wide range of standards and regulations to be complied with. The person erecting the system is liable for correct fulfilment for 30 years, and the requirements of the insurance company come on top of that. Please observe the appropriate local and statutory requirements. 5 Responsibility of the operator Through the feed-in of the gained energy, almost every P system is subject to the requirements for commercial use. For the system operator, this creates the obligation to give the system the proper maintenance, checking and repairs. 8 External lightning protection for roof systems Sloping roof with P and lightning protection system Complete product range, decades of experience The inclusion of a photovoltaic system into the existing lightning protection concept of a building is often neglected during refitting work. This significantly increases the risk of considerable damage through a direct lightning strike. For public buildings, for example, the LBO (state construction regulations) require a lightning protection system to protect people and provide protection against fires. Our extensive product range and our experience mean that we can offer the right solutions for almost any type of sloping roof. Metallic components without a conductive connection into the building must be connected directly to the lightning protection. Active DC/AC cables and data systems are included in the equipotential bonding using suitable lightning current and surge arrestors at the entry to the building. All metallic parts of a building and electrically powered equipment and their supply cable must be integrated into the lightning protection system. Separation distance Air-conditioning systems, electrical sensors and photovoltaic systems are examples for roof structures in which the separation distance must be maintained. This distance is required to avoid dangerous sparking and lightning components between both the external lightning protection system and the metallic building parts and electrical devices. In particular, when P systems are refitted, this is often not possible due to the construction situation. Here, the insulated iscon cable can help. The ideal solution with which a separation distance of 0.75 m through the air and.5 m for solid matter can be maintained. 10 Cable support systems Cable routing with cable support system and plastic wall trunking and surge protection Solid connections Tidy cable routing is at the heart of a P system which can function for decades. Metallic cable trays and mesh cable trays protect the system against mechanical loads, both in indoor and outdoor areas. Strain relief for vertical cable routing When cables are routed vertically, appropriate strain relief must be ensured. 11 Cable support systems Tough conditions Simple installation Cables outside the building are particularly exposed to the weather. Rain, snow, heat, U radiation and wind continually attack the P system. OBO cable systems combine the best possible protection with rapid mounting. Our product range comprises closed cable tray, wide span tray and mesh cable tray systems. Using clever details, such as the mounting adapter, you can fix mesh cable trays to the OBO FangFix stones in a single action. The covers are secured to the flat roof by tightening straps. Screening of cables The passive screening of cables with OBO cable support systems with covers permits attenuation of up to 60 db. 12 Cable routing in the area of fire protection walls Protected bridging of the fire wall using a fire protection bandage Solutions for outdoor fire protection walls When cables are run over fire protection walls, serious errors are often made. Combustible cables may not bridge these areas without protection. The combination of our mesh cable tray and the weatherproof fire protection bandage ensures you are on the safe side if there is a fire, the bandage foams up, preventing the fire from spreading. Insulation in fire protection walls in buildings If an installation is run through a fire protection wall, then it should be closed with types of insulation in such a way as to prevent the spread of fire and smoke. The fire brigade can recognise the P system through the identification and fireproof routing of the energised DC cables. Fire protection for P cables Unswitchable DC cables of the P system must be routed safely in the building to prevent damage to the insulation. Even in case of fire, the fire brigade must be able to rescue people safely. According to DE-AR , protection of the DC cables is possible using suitable insulation or a fire protection duct according to DIN 402. With Pyroline Sun P, DC cables already installed in the emergency and escape route can be protected later in accordance with the standard. LPA OBO 3

14 Cable routing systems protect cables and the reliability of the system. Perfect protection in buildings Even in buildings, cables are subject to mechanical loads, which, in the worst-case scenario, can lead to the failure of the system. Combination of the OBO products creates reliable protection of cabling, from the roof through to the inverter. Wall and ceiling trunking of different dimensions are complemented with appropriate fittings. Plastic and metal cable and pipe fastening systems and clips protect small cable volumes and individual cables. 15 Metal pipe systems: the first choice for protection under tough conditions Protection against sunlight and high temperatures Strong U radiation can cause damage and destruction to plastics. Electrical devices generate heat through loss and, in conjunction with high ambient temperature and direct sunlight, the internal temperature can increase. Based on the local loads, the installation engineer may need to perform additional measures. 16 Protection in every direction: surge protection systems All-round protection There are always two sides to the surge protection of photovoltaic systems. On the direct current side (DC), there can be surge voltages from lightning strikes, whilst, on the alternating current side (AC), voltage peaks from the power and data network may damage the inverter. OBO surge protection reliably protects every side. Existing data cables can be safely included in the equipotential bonding using protection devices. 18 Planning aid, protective angle method Protective angle method for roof structures You have protected the flat-roofed building correctly according to the standard DE (IEC 62305). You must now protect all roof structures with interception rods. This involves observing the separating distance (s). If the roof structure has a conductive continuation into the building (e.g. with a stainless steel pipe with a connection to the ventilation or air-conditioning system), then the separating distance (s) must always be maintained. The interception rod must be erected at a certain distance from the building to be protected. This distance safely prevents arcing of the lightning current and dangerous spark creation. α = lightning protection angle, s = separating distance Roof structures with an individual air-termination rod The protective angle for lightning rods varies according to lightning protection class. 20 Lightning protection equipotential bonding system and separation distance Separating distance (s) between the lightning protection system and cable support system Important measures The following points must be taken into account to guarantee comprehensive protection of the P system: Local earthing (PAS) must be connected to the main equipotential bonding (HPAS). Equipotential bonding cables must be routed close to and parallel with the DC cables. Data cables must be included in the protection concept. You can find an overview of the protective measures in the table "Overview of protective measures". Separation distance According to DIN EN 62305, the lightning protection system must be erected at a separation distance (s) from the parts of the P system. Usually, a separation distance (s) (= safety distance) of 0.5 m to m is sufficient. 23 Four steps to comprehensive protection Step : Check the separation distance If the required separation distance cannot be complied with, then the metallic parts must be interconnected to be able to carry lightning current. Step 2: Check the protection measures Example: measures for lightning protection equipotential bonding are used on the DC and AC side, e.g. lightning arrestor (type ). Step 3: Include data cables Data cables must be included in the protection concept. Step 4: Carrying out the equipotential bonding Local equipotential bonding must be provided on the inverter.
