29 Potential balance Current VDE regulations require potential balance to be provided when consumer systems are installed for electric power. Potential balance prevents dangerous contact voltages and eliminates differences in potential between the earthed conductor of the power supply system and metallic parts of the building, e.g. fresh water or sewage pipes, the heating system and gas supply, etc. The antenna, telephone and P.A. systems must be incorporated in this system, with due attention paid to the relevant regulations. In the past, it was customary and permissible to make use of the network of water pipes for the purpose of protective and system earthing. However, the use of non-metallic materials means that this is no longer possible. In the event of changes being made to the pipe system which mean that it is no longer possible to use the water pipes for The purpose of protective and system earthing, the electricity supply company may require the user to install a new earthing system (cross, underground, strip or plate) in accordance with VDE 0190). 30 Earthing material, potential balance Information on the laying of the earth connection in the foundations of a building. When the carcass of a building is erected, the architect or client will arrange for an earth connector to be installed during the concreting operations and in accordance with the relevant regulations. Part of the earth connector strip should be led out as a free end around 30 cm above the cellar floor, and should be at least 1,50 m long. The electrician will connect the potential balance rail to the end of the strip. If earthing is installed at a later date, either earthing plates or underground earthing connections can be used, the latter in the form of earthing rods, to create an earth connection. The thicknesses and lengths depend on the specific earth resistance, which can vary considerably. The earth connection should have a resistance of less than 2 Ω. The effectiveness of the earth connection should be checked from time to time. The minimum thickness should be 3 mm for strip steel, and 50 x 3 mm for cross-sectional steel. Copper NYY cables of at least 10 mm thickness should be used to connect the relevant components for potential balance. The cross-sections must be in accordance with VDE 0100 table 9. This design information does not affect the currently valid regulations on the design of all types of earthing and potential balance systems. 56 The WERIT overvoltage protection programme for safety in building and equipment technology Damage caused by a direct lightning strike, resulting for example in a fire in the roof of a building, can be avoided by the use of an external lightning protection system. Overvoltage damage can be avoided by the use of coordinated overvoltage protection units. The LPZ lightning protection zone concept, acc. to DIN V VDE V 0 185, has proved its effectiveness. In this case, a building is divided into various zones, with a surge arrester fitted at the cross-over points between the appropriate zones. The arrangement of the arresters selectively deflects the enormous difference in potential which is created for a short period of time between the mains system and earth.
