9 73rd ISSUE AFEEC-FAPECA Conference & Meeting in Kuala Lumpur TEEAM was honoured to host the 2017 Conference and Meeting of the ASEAN Federation of Electrical Engineering Contractors (AFEEC) and the Federation of Asian Pacific Electrical Contractors Associations (FAPECA). The grand event was held from 11th to 13th September 2017 at the Kuala Lumpur City Centre in conjunction with IGEM 2017 an International Greentech & Eco Product Exhibition & Conference. This important Conference and Meeting drew positive participation from National Associations including the Association of Indonesia Electrical and Mechanical Contractors (AKLI), Korea Electrical Contractors Association (KECA), Society of Philippines Electrical Contractors & Suppliers (SPECS), Taiwan Electrical Contractors Association (TECA), Hong Kong Electrical Contractors Association (HKECA), Thai Electrical & Mechanical Contractors Association (TEMCA), Singapore Electrical Contractors & Licensed Electrical Workers Association (SECA) and TEEAM Malaysia. We had an overwhelming 180 delegates. Conference on Carbon Neutral Opportunities Carbon Neutral Opportunities was a very challenging topic for the conference, which was held on 11th October 2017 at the Impiana KLCC Hotel. However, this did not hinder participating countries in submitting their informative conference papers comprising valuable contents. In the Evolution of E&E business and industries, we need to initiate steps to protect Mother Earth, leaving minimal or zero carbon footprint. Global warming is already happening and that too, at an alarming rate. Therefore, we need to change the way we do business to reduce such an environmental impact. During the course of this evolution to greener practices, there are many opportunities awaiting for us to unearth. New discovery through research papers, ecofriendly solutions, re-engineering of practices and new undiscovered businesses are some of the exciting opportunities, to name a few. The conference discussed and shared ways to overcome global warning and to reduce the environmental impact from the respective countries activities. Opening ceremony (from left) Ir Chew Shee Fuee KMN (AFEEC President & TEEAM Immediate Past President), Mr Suresh Kumar Gorasia (Organising Chairman & TEEAM International Affairs Chairman), YBhg Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali (Guest of Honour, CIDB Chairman), Ir Yong Ah Huat (TEEAM President) and Mr John Tan (FAPECA President from Singapore). 31 73rd ISSUE Panel Discussion on The Importance of Electro-Safety Electricity plays a very major role in our daily lives. It drives our modern lifestyles and powers our world. Thus, it is extremely crucial to know how to manage it properly, and the most critical aspect is to learn about electrical safety. On 27th November 2017, Schneider Electric hosted a Panel Discussion at the Schneider Head Office in Petaling Jaya (on electrical safety topics) together with the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga, ST) and TEEAM. The platform was aimed at addressing electrical safety issues and the necessary precautionary measures to be taken in order to avoid any possible electrical accidents. TEEAM representative, Ir Chew Shee Fuee KMN (Immediate Past President) was present as one of the distinguished Panelists. According to ST, on average, there were 58 electrical accident cases which occurred every year in the country, with nearly 50% of the accidents resulting in untimely deaths. The Panel Discussion emphasised that safe and efficient use of electricity at home was important, in order to minimise the potential risks and possible accidents. Mr Soo Pow Leong, Country President of Schneider Malaysia, aptly highlighted that everyday behaviours are putting people in danger. He emphasised that it is not only important to use a certified electrician to keep our homes safe, but it was also vital to cut out the smaller risks that could still have devastating and fatal consequences. Electrical safety is crucial to keep users and their families, to be always safe. The Panel Discussion encouraged users to ensure the electrical system installed at their homes were up-to-date and most importantly, to ensure that regular checks are always performed by a certified electrician. Some critical recommendations included: Never use faulty electrical appliances. Make sure that all appliances have the approved regulatory compliance mark by SIRIM. Do not attempt to repair faulty electrical appliances and power points all by yourself. Always engage a certified electrician to do so. Avoid overloading the adaptors. For the album (from left) Mr Mazliazhar (Schneider Senior Product Marketing Engineer), Ms Iffah Hannah Muluk (ST Head of Electrical Safety Development Unit), Ir Chew Shee Fuee KMN (TEEAM Immediate Past President) and Ms Daphne Iking (Emcee-cum-TV Anchor). Keep electrics (leads and appliances) away from water as water can amplify the current shock. Unplug the appliances when you are not using them in order to reduce the risk of fire. Ms Iffah Hannah Muluk, the ST Head of Electrical Safety Development Unit, urged the public to pro-actively take charge of the safety of their families and homes. The Panel Discussion provided a timely platform to push for the importance of electrical safety as it is the responsibility of not only the homeowners but of everyone. All have a very important role to play in order to avoid electrical accidents from happening. The Panel concluded the discussion by providing helpful tips and recommendations for consumers that will help mitigate electrical accidents at homes and buildings. Another tip that was shared during the Panel was the importance of investing in high quality and reliable electrical components at homes, such as Schneider Electric s Easy9 RCBO which can detect as little as 10mA of electrical leakage. This 10mA RCD is a requirement by ST, to be installed in all homes for the water heater circuit.
