3 3 Distinguished Delegates and Representatives from Safety Hi-Tech Engineering Sdn Bhd & Ankug E&C Malaysia Sdn Bhd Ladies and Gentlemen, First and foremost, let us thank Allah SWT, for His grace and mercy, for making the signing of Memorandum of Agreement possible between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and two organisations - 1) Safety Hi-Tech Engineering Sdn Bhd and 2) Ankug E&C Malaysia Sdn Bhd - which will be officiated shortly. On behalf of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, it gives me great pleasure to extend our warmest welcome to everyone present at this auspicious event. Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, We were utterly shocked with a devastated fire that broke out in Johor Bahru Hospital which claimed six lives last October. The fire has caused much reaction from several quarters, such as the Ministry of Health, which had directed all its old 3

4 4 hospital building to be audited on its level of fire safety. Other government buildings too have been advised to do likewise as a measure to ensure the safety level of all fire fighting equipment provided is working perfectly. Ladies and Gentlemen, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia has taken an initiative with UTM alumni-owned company, Safety Hi-Tech Engineering Sdn. Bhd. and Ankug Malaysia Engineering & Consulting Sdn. Bhd. to have a joint effort through its OSHE unit and Alumni to conduct several programmes such as raising awareness, practice, training, consultation and research, as well as fire safety audit, certified safety evaluation course according to the standard practice of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) of United States of America, through extended collaboration with the Fire Department and SIRIM, as well as other relevant government departments and authorities. Presently, there is no university in Malaysia that offers a course on Fire Safety Engineering at Undergraduate level. UTM, with her strategic partner, shall work together in this direction and Dr. Yahya Mohamad Yatim, Deputy Director of 4

5 5 OSHE) will be the intermediary between University and strategic partner to realise the aim. To offer short courses at professional certificate level, such as Executive Short Courses in Licensing the Practitioners or Certified Evaluator in Fire and Safety Hazard, UTMSPACE can be used as a platform to achieve this aim. The strategic partner can then assist in conducting the programme through cooperating with the Fire Deparment and Malaysia Rescue. This will help the Fire Department in making inspections on all buildings that apply for Certifice of Fire (FC) or renewal of such certificate. With the consultant complete report, the Fire Department s approval of FC can be released to the respective building owners in a shorter period. This can help the Fire Deparment to quicken the release of FC to building owners. The partnership between UTM Alumni Liason Unit, Safety Hi- Tech Engineering Sdn Bhd and Ankug E&C Malaysia Sdn Bhd is a strategic alliance between the academia and industry. It is my sincere hope that this collaborative effort will create a synergy, resulting in impactful outcomes that will 5
