Leiston RE: 2006 Triple merger updates (S/N s through ) PRIORITY: Mandatory TIME ALLOWANCE: 5.5 Hours ISSUES: Green Float Indicator Lights The green lights on the switch panel for the merger can be on even if the remote for supplying a constant supply of oil is not turned on in the tractor. Currently the green lights look at the limit switches to make sure they are in the correct position and the conveyors are turned on, but rely on the operator to lock the remote on the tractor in the open position. Belt Lacing The belt lacing joints on the conveyors are attached with 5/16 hardware and several people had problems with these bolts breaking during the 2006 season. Gearbox Breather Oil from the gearbox can escape through the breather because the breather and the gears in the gearbox are in-line with each other. Finger Guard Profile The profile of the finger guards has caused material to bunch as it is going across the conveyors. Hitch Adapter Spacers If the spacers are not installed between the tractor s lower lift arms and the hitch adapters on the merger, the hitch adapters can bend outward from the forces generated by the tractor sliding back and forth on the pins in the hitch adapters. 2 Plastic Conveyor Cover Guide Strip The top of the center conveyor cover has a galvanized steel channel on it that travels along the bottom of the main frame when the center head is raised and lowered. As the center head is raised, the channel hits the bottom of the frame and can break or bend the components holding the plastic cover in place. When the cover folds down, the carriage bolts on the bottom of the cover mount can tear through the plastic. Conveyor Cover Spring Mounts The center conveyor cover may fold down under it own weight because the springs are not stretched far enough to pull the cover into the upright position. Limit Switch Slider Guide The sliders that trigger the limit switches on the right and left lift arms can become bent by contacting the hydraulic cylinders. SOLUTION: Green Float Indicator Lights Add a pressure switch in the supply line going to the float manifold on the merger. This switch then gets wired into the electrical circuit for the green lights on the switchbox in the cab so when there is no pressure being supplied to the float circuit (the tractor remote is not open), the green lights will not light up. 1) Install the tee (P/N 46250), adapter (P/N 46829), and switch (P/N 71115) as shown below. 3 2) The wires from the pressure switch connector must be in the following locations: Pin A: Black Wire Pin B: Red Wire Pin C: Green Wire 3) Plug the harness (P/N 73110) into the switch and route the harness behind the control box as shown below. 4) Locate the harness that goes from the control box on the merger to the switch box in the cab of the tractor. Measure 5-3/4 away from the control box on this harness and pull the loom back from the wires. Page 3

4 5) Locate wire 10A in this harness and cut the wire 5-3/4 away from the control box. 6) Splice the harness that was routed behind the control into the #10A wire that was cut in step 5 as shown below. Wire 10A on the new harness should attach to the wire that goes into the control box and wire 1010 on the new harness should attach to the wire that goes towards the cab of the tractor. After the connectors are crimped on, be sure to heat up the shrink tube to seal the connection over the wire. 7) Use electrical tape to join the harness to the existing merger harness as shown below. 5 8) Verify that the switch functions properly performing the following steps: a. Connect the float circuit hydraulic hoses to a tractor remote. b. Engage the tractor remote to supply the float circuit with oil. c. Flip all 3 switches for the conveyor to the right or left (the tractor PTO can be on or off) d. Lower all 3 conveyors to the ground e. At this point, the 3 green light should be on f. Turn off the tractor remote for the float circuit g. At this point, the lights should turn off (there may be a few second delay for them to shut off) Belt Lacing Add a steel channel over the belt lacing joint to add more strength to the joint and keep the bolts from breaking. While this update is being done, a plastic strip should also be added that will help keep the belt lacing joint from rubbing on the belt supports. This will increase the life of the joint. This update includes enough materials to update 4 belt lacing joints. This is enough for each conveyor belt plus 1 extra in case one of the belts has a dutchman in it. 1) Remove 2 bolts from the end of the belt lacing and loosen the other belt lacing bolts 2) Insert the plastic strip (P/N ) between the ends of the belt and re-install the end bolt. Notch must be positioned as shown Page 5

6 3) Remove the remaining bolts and rotate the plastic strip down between the ends of the belt as shown below. (NOTE: A pair of C clamp style vise grips or a clamp may be used to keep the belt lacing from completely separating while removing the bolts.) 4) Align the end holes in the belt lacing with the plastic strip by placing a screw driver through the holes. Align plastic strip using a screw driver through this hole. 5) Clamp the belt together in the following locations. 6) Install the part number channels over the belt as shown below. (Each P/N channel attaches with (3) bolts and (3) nuts) Page 6

7 7) Remove the clamps from the belt. 8) Repeat for the remaining belts Gearbox Breather Add an elbow (P/N 45764) to the breather on the gearbox to keep the oil inside of the gearbox. 1) Remove the breather from the gearbox. 2) Install the elbow in the gearbox so that it is pointing up as shown. 3) Reinstall the breather on the elbow as shown. Note: Use loctite 565 or equivalent pipe thread sealant on the threads of the elbow when installing. Finger Guard Profile All 2006 mergers can have their finger guards updates to the 2007 style if they choose. This update is NOT MANDATORY; it should be done only if the customer wants it. 8 3. CLOSE TOOL TO CUT FINGER GUARD 4. OPEN TOOL AND SLIDE TOOL FORWARD. UNCUT FINGER GUARD CUT FINGER GUARD. There are 5 tools available to trim the finger guards as shown. These tools will be sent between the dealers so this update can be completed. Dealers should contact the Miller St. Nazianz Service Department for more information on where these tools are. Page 8

9 Hitch Adapter Spacers If there are no spacers between the lower lift arms on the tractor and the hitch adapters, add enough of the washers to fill the gap (see figure 1). If the hitch adapters are already spread open, bend them back to the distance between the plates is 2-31/32 (see figure 2). If there is a gap like this where the tractor s lower link can move side-to-side, add washers (P/N 99162) as seen in the following picture. Figure 1 Figure 2 To address the issue where some mergers are being attached to a category 3 hitch without putting an adapter over the merger hitch adapter pins, (2) category 3 to category 2 adapters (P/N 57423) have also been included with the parts to complete this service bulletin. 10 Plastic Conveyor Cover Guide Strip To make the center conveyor cover slide along the bottom of the main frame easier, a plastic strip needs to be added to the top of the cover. To do this, the 2 step bolts in the middle of the galvanized channel must be removed. The step bolts can be thrown away, but the nuts will be reused. (NOTE: A new galvanized channel (P/N ) for on top of the center conveyor cover has also been supplied in case the one on the merger is bent.) 11 To fix the problem where the lower step bolts have torn through the plastic, a galvanized plate (p/n ) should be installed on the inside of the plastic cover. Extra holes need to be drilled in the plastic as shown in the picture below so both holes in the plate can be used. Use (2) step bolts and (2) nuts to attach the plates through the new holes. Drill out extra holes Conveyor Cover Spring Mounts To stretch the springs further, new spring mounts must be installed as shown in the following pictures. 12 Limit Switch Slider Guide To keep the slider from contacting the hydraulic cylinder, bolt the channel in place using existing hardware as shown below in the picture. (Note: the flanges on the part point in opposite directions on the RH limit switch and the LH limit switch.)
