2 FUSE-LINKS D D type fuse-links are used to protect electric, signal and control networks. I/t characteristics of type fuse-links comply with the following standards: IEC , DIN VDE 0636/301 and CEE 16. CEE 16 standard regulates two types of characteristics: - quick characteristics, in ETI the so-called DZ and - time-lag, in ETI the so-called TDZ. VDE 0603/301 and IEC regulates the gg characteristics (protection in the whole range of the breaking capacity of the fuse). Because their breaking characteristics are completly in accordance with CEE 16 requirements for slow characteristics, they can also be labeled as TDZ. 18 LOW VOLTAGE NH KNIFE-BLADE FUSE-LINKS NV NV KOMBI advantages ETI introduces a new series of fuse-links with dual indication, which will replace the existing series of NV low voltage NH knife-blade fuse-links. The most important advantage is new - dual indication named KOMBI. Through the combination of two indicator systems NV KOMBI, it was achieved at the same time that the indication of the center indicator became as reliable as that of the upper cover. The advantages of the new combined indicator construction are: reliable indicator operation for all areas of power supply and industry; reducing in half the number of types and lower storage costs; a good visibility of the indicator in all the installation conditions fuse-bases, fuse-rails or cut-out switch disconnectors. NV low voltage NH knife-blade fuse-links ETI NV fuse-links are used as the most reliable and economical protection of cable lines and installation lines against smaller overloads and high short-circuits currents. Their dimensions correspond with DIN 43620, other technical characteristics correspond with the requirements of the following standards: - Rated voltage 500V/gL-gG: VDE 0636/201 IEC Rated voltage 690V/gL-gG: VDE 0636/201 IEC Rated voltage 690V/aM: VDE Rated voltage 400V/gF: PN-IEC NV fuse-links are inserted into fuse bases by means of a handle or a safety handle. Short description of constituent parts for NV fuse-links The body of the fuse-link consist of quality steatite which is highly resistant against temperature overloads. Covers for type " " and "SI" are of aluminium and resistant to corrosive atmospheres. Covers for type "I" and "ISI" have aluminium lugs and plastic cover, which serves to prevent accidental contact with parts under voltage. In the inner part of the ceramic body there is installed a fuse element of copper which is welded on a specially shaped inner part of the contact knife by spot welding. By careful shaping of this part we achived that during assembly the fuse element is placed exactly into the middle of the inner place. The remaining inside place of the ceramic body is filled up with quartz sand of preciesly determined granulation and composition All contact knives up to the size of NV 2 C are made of copper, the others are of brass. All of them are additionally protected with a layer of silver or on special order of nickel On the base of cyclic tests we have proved that the fusing characteristics are very stable and the tolerance on the current axis can be up to ± 10%. The selectivity is assured in the proportion of rated currents 1:1,6 in the region of overloads as well as in the short-circuit region. 41 ULTRA QUICK FUSE-LINKS D0 D HRC UQ FUSES FOR PROTECTION OF SEMICONDUCTORS POWER NEEDS CONTROL 97

42 FUSE LINKS FOR SEMICONDUCTOR PROTECTION Description Fuses are the most used means of protection of all kinds of electrical circuits against overcurrents effects. Depending of required electrical performances, there exist few different categories: Low-voltage fuses (up to 1000V a.c.) High-voltage fuses (up to 36kV a.c.) Miniature fuses.(up to 250V a.c.) These fuses achieve their very low I 2 t let-through by the design of elements which run at high temperatures at rated current. Such fuse-link may therefore have a higher body temperature and so good ventilation and terminations suitable for the higher heat dissipation are required. As the fuse element is operating at high temperature it is susceptible to repetitive duty cycles, particulary repetitive short duration pulses when the peak currents exceeds the rated current. This is important for thyristor control due to the peak nature of the waveform of the current. To avoid premature operation of the fuse-link the I 2 t of a single pulse should be significantly less than the pre-arcing I 2 t of the fuse-link corresponding to a time equal to the pulse duration. UQ Low-voltage fuses are mainly intended to protect industrial installation and equipment and supply cables. Very fast-acting fuses (usually called fuses for semiconductor protection ) are used for the protection of diodes, thyristors and other power semiconductors in a.c. and d.c. power electronic applications such as AC/DC, DC/AC, DC/DC and Frequency convertors. Power semiconductors, used in those convertors have important advantage of small sizes for theirs power handling capability. Theirs disadvantage is limited capability to withstand overcurrents, high peak currents and peak overvoltages. Devices, used to protect power semiconductors should therefore not to produce any of these three conditions when they operate during fault clearence. Fuses are particulary suitable for this purpose, because: High prospective fault currents are rapidly cut-off limiting the peak currents and reducing the current duration to very short times The I2t let-through (Joule integral) by a fuse at high fault currents is practically constant limiting the generation of thermal energy within the semiconductor, thus saving it from thermal damage To prevent diodes and thyristors being destroyed fuse links must be chosen with the following basic criteria: a) The peak current withstand of the semiconductor device must be greather than the cut-off current of the fuse b) The I 2 t withstand of the device must be greather than the maximum let-through by the fuse c) The peak reverse capability of semiconductor device must be greather than the maximum fuse arc voltage d) For all additional informations see technical report IEC 146-6, Semiconductors convertors, Part 6 Applications guide for the protection of semiconductor convertors against overcurrent by fuses Note: Detailed information and technical characteristics about ETI fuse-links for semiconductors protection are stated in a seperate ULTRA QUICK catalogue. Any device that rapidly decreases the short-circiut current in a circuit with significant inductance produces a high overvoltage proportional to the rate of change of current. Special types of fuses have therefore been developed for power semiconductor protection; the design of the melting element is such that the arc voltage is kept below safe limits. 98

49 VV HIGH VOLTAGE HIGH-BREAKING CAPACITY FUSES APPLICATION RECOMMENDATION FOR TRANSFORMER PROTECTION DEFINITIONS AND TERMS HIGH VOLTAGE FUSES VV POWER NEEDS CONTROL 113

50 HIGH - VOLTAGE HIGH-BREAKING CAPACITY FUSES General information New line of ETI HV fuse links named VV THERMO are designed to protect devices in switch-gears and other equipment (distribution transformers, capacitors, motors) from thermal and dynamic effects of shortcircuits and overcurrents. Time-current characteristics correspond to standard IEC , item Back-up fuse (Currentlimiting fuse capable of breaking, under specific conditions of use and behaviour, all currents from the rated maximum breaking current down to the rated minimum breaking current). They are suitable for installation in: indoor and outdoor switchgear gas (SF6)-insulated enclosures special service conditions (different from normal conditions, described in item 2.1. of standard IEC ) The most significant features of ETI high voltage fuses: Low temperature rise bacause of low power dissipation High breaking capacity 50kA Possibility of three different striker pin forces: 80N and 120N (with integrated temperature dependent limiter) and 50N (without limiter) Reliable sealing system against humidity irruption Free of aging Low switching voltages Upon a request, fuse links can be supplied into no-standard dimensions Standards ETI VV (Medium Voltage) fuse-links comply with the following standards and specifications: IEC , Fifth edition 01/2002 "Current limiting fuses" - CESI Milan (Italy) tested DIN "High-voltage fuses, rated voltages 3.6 up t V (fuse-links)" VDE 0670 Part 402 / IEC "Selection of current limiting fuses for transformer circuits" VDE 0670 Part 401 /IEC "Requirements for HV fuse-links for motor circuits" IEC "High-voltage fuses for external protection of power capacitors" VV Construction ETI high voltage fuses are designed to assure stable and reliable characteristics. The glazed porcelain tube (made in ETI own ceramic factory) is extremely high mechanical and thermal resistant. Galvanically protected contact caps made of electrolitic copper are nickel - or upon customer request silver plated. Caps are rolled by pressing into the groove of the tube. The tightness of this connection is assured by a special seal resistant to ageing and high temperatures. The design and method of production of the melting elements ensures precisely tolerances and stable time/current characteristics. Fuse elements are wounded on a ceramic carrier and electricaly welded on a special copper strips. The inside of the tube is filled with quarz sand with an exactly determined granulation and chemical structure. The sand guarantees good and reliable extinguishing of the electric arc. An important element in the fuse link construction is also the striker system. Part of that system is temperature sensitive element, which reacts in cases of temperature increasing of the fuse link due to various reasons. The reaction temperature is set to approximately 120 C. The system reacts in such a way that short time overloads do not cause the fuse to interroupt the circuit unnecessarily. Only when inadmissible values of surrounding temperatures are exceeded, the fuse open the switch via the striker pin. Because of these characteristics, ETI "thermal" striker pin is convenient for the protection of the fuse enclosure of SF6 Ė switchgears which requires additional protection features against inadmissible temperatures of certain switchgear parts.
