5 Notdson REFILL/MELTER Packaging and Assembly Division Atlanta, Georgia TECHNICAL PUB ICATION o - RETROFIT - ELECTRONIC LEVEL CONTROL MODEL INTRODUCTION The Electronic Overheat Switch Kit (P/N 73 98) provides protection against overheating of the refill/melter grid. Shut down the applicator as described in the applicator service manual Turn the refill melter off at the main switch. Disconnect and lock out external electrical power to the refill melter. Remove all material from the hopper. Open the clean-out door at the base of the hopper, remove any remaining unmelted material from the hopper, and close the clean-out door. 6. Open the electrical box on the side of the grid, and remove the wire nuts from wires number 9 and. 7. Carefully remove the thermostat probe from the grid. Take care not to kink or make sharp bends in the copper capillary tube when removing the probe. Kinks or sharp bends will prevent the probe from functioning properly. 8. Remove the screws securing Tl to the control box, and remove Tl and its probe from the control box and flex conduit. Take care not to kink or make sharp bends in the copper capillary tube when removing the probe. Kinks or sharp bends will prevent the probe from functioning properly. Remove wires number 9 and from terminal block TB (, Figure ). Remove the locknut (3, Figure ) securing the flex conduit to the control box. Remove the mounting screws which secure the grid electrical box to the grid, and remove the grid electrical box (w/flex conduit) from the grid. Remove the screws which secure the male sleeve to the grid, and lower the male sleeve until it rests on the female sleeve. Remove the screws which secure the grid to the hopper flange, and remove the grid and upper and lower insulators. NOTE: The old grid heaters are not compatible with the new grid and must not be reused Clean the underside of the hopper flange and the top of the male sleeve, if necessary. Using the screws provided, install the new grid (, Figure 3) and the new hopper insulator (, Figure 3). 8 Packaging and Assembly Division Nordson Atlanta, Georgia TECHNICAL PUi3LICATlON 9. Disconnect wires number 4, 5,lO, and from the control relay (4, Figure ). Discard wire number.. Remove the screws which secure the control relay to the control box, and remove the control relay. If relay is in good condition, it can be used as a spare part.. Disconnect wires number 4, 5, and from terminal block TB and remove them from the control box.. Remove the AUTO/MANUAL switch from the control panel by removing the nut securing the switch to the front of the control box and disconnecting wire number 9 from TBl terminal 5, wire number 4 from S3 (the push button switch), and wire number 3 from L. Wire number has already been disconnected. NOTE: Before cutting the tie wraps to permit removal of these wires from the harness, loosely wrap the new tie wraps included in the kit around the harness near the wraps being cut. 3. Remove the lower right mounting screw which secures the control box to the hopper. 4. Remove the locknut from the conduit connector (, Figure 4) on top of the auxiliary control box. Route the wiring from the new auxiliary control box through the hole in the bottom of the control box (where the flex conduit was attached) and insert the conduit connector through the hole. 9 Packaging and Assembly Division Nordson Atlanta, Georgia TECHNICAL PUBLICATION O Using the locknut removed in Step 4, secure the auxiliary control box to the control box. NOTE: Do not reinstall the mounting screw (removed in Step 3) at this time. 7. Connect wires number 9 and 34 to TBl as shown in the wiring diagram. 8. Install the push on tab (provided) control box. on the ground stud in the Connect the GND wire to the terminal installed in Step 8. Remove the locknuts from the flex conduit shipped with the kit. Make sure the 45' elbow is not connected to the conduit. Route the thermostat probe Tl, removed in Step, through the control box and the auxiliary control box. Carefully route the probes from Tl and T and the three wires extending from the auxiliary control box through the locknut, the control box, the elbow, and the conduit and into the grid electrical box. NOTE: The probes and wires must be routed through the locknut, then through the hole in the bottom of the auxiliary control box, the elbow, and the conduit. The locknut must be inside the control box. Also, the probe will not fit through the elbow if it is connected to the conduit. Take care not to kink or make sharp bends in the copper capillary tube when inserting the probe. Kinks or sharp bends will prevent the probe from functioning properly Install the new AUTO/MANUAL switch in the control panel. The switch should be oriented with wire number 36 at the center up position and wire number at the center down position. Connect wire number 4 to S3. Route wire number 9 through the loose tie wraps to station 5 on TBl and wire 36 to station 3 on TBl (attached there with wire number 3). Route wire number through the loose tie wraps to the NC terminal on Tl. Wire number 3 is attached to L. Route wire number 35 through the loose tie wraps and sleeve into the auxiliary control box. Connect it to the relay coil at the same terminal as wire number 3. Tighten the tie wraps. Reinstall Tl in the control box. Connect wire number 33 to the COM terminal of Tl. Tighten the flex conduit fittings at the grid electrical box and at the auxiliary control box. Reinstall the mounting screw removed in Step 3 (, Figure 4), securing the auxiliary control box to the refill melter. 10 Packaging and Assembly Division TECHNICAl PUB /CATION Apply a coating of the sealant (provided) to both sides of the new insulator for the grid electrical box. Install the new grid electrical box and insulator on the new grid. Apply a coating of the sealant to the inside surface of the heater cartridge retaining plate (provided). Using the screws provided, install the heater cartridge retaining plate on the back side of the grid. Insert the probes into the two holes in the center of the grid. (See Figure 5) NOTE: Either probe may be inserted into either hole. 4. Insert the new heater cartridges (provided) into the holes in the new grid. (See Figure 5) NOTE: Do not use the old heater cartridges. They are not compatible with the new grid electrical circuitry , 44. Connect the heater cartridge wiring to the terminals on TB (, Figure 5), as shown in the wiring diagram. Connect the ground wire to the push on terminal in the grid electrical box. (, Figure 5) Connect wires number 7 and 8 to TB as shown in the wiring diagram. THERMOSTAT PROBES Figure 5 - Grid Electrical Box 45. Locate the main switch on the front panel of the control box, and remove the mounting nut which secures the main switch to the front panel. Carefully separate the main switch from the front panel. NOTE: Do not disconnect any wiring from the main switch Install the fuse insulator (provided) on the main switch, with the hole over the stem of the main switch and the flat section between the fuses. (, Figure 6) Reinstall the main switch in the front panel, and reinstall the mounting nut. 5. Set the thermostat Tl to the operating temperature of the applicator. 5. Close the control box. Figure 6 - Control Box Door Refill the hopper with material. Start up the applicator as described in the applicator service manual. 53. Restore external electrical power to the refill melter. 54. 12 Packaging and Assembly Division gz3 Atlanta, Georgia TECHNICAl PUB /CA T/ON 56. After a time delay of approximately 3 minutes, the refill melter will resume normal operation. This delay allows the thermoplastic material in the applicator tank sufficient time to reach application temperature and insures an accurate reading of the level of material in the tank by the refill melter probe. Operating the refill/melter in the MANUAL mode overrides the time delay. A Operating the refill/melter in the MANUAL mode bypasses the level control function of the unit. Overfilling may occur if the level of adhesive in the applicator tank is not carefully observed during manual operation. 57.
