3 UNLOCKING THE SECRETS OF WORN TYRES Michelin wants to help consumers and industry answer a key question: THE DESIGN CHOICE FOR TYRE MANUFACTURERS How a tyre performs when new and throughout its life, is a design choice by the tyre manufacturer. Michelin spends over 600 million annually and employs over 6000 people in R&D to develop new compounds and technologies to help expand the lifetime and safety of tyres. The main technical challenge is making a tyre that performs, particularly in wet conditions, when the tread depth is worn down and close to the legal limit. By following and applying simple design rules, all tyre manufacturers can make tyres that will perform right down to the legal limit. There are three main elements in tyre development that a tyre manufacturer can deploy simultaneously to enhance performance and safety tread compound; tread pattern and the shape of the contact patch.? If the performance and safety of my tyres in wet conditions are only measured when my tyres are new, and the level of that performance starts to deteriorate as soon as I leave the tyre shop, how do I know if I m still safe? Today we do not know. Studies carried out by Michelin show that the remaining tread depth is not a reliable indicator of wet braking performance. The only way to answer this question is to start testing tyres in their most unfavourable condition when they are worn to the legal limit and to establish a threshold for the minimum performance criteria in this condition. Tyre tests have been taking place for decades by tyre manufacturers, vehicle makers, industry test bodies and consumer organisations, and a standardized European test was defined in 2012 when tyre labelling was introduced. However, testing is always of new products and results show that there are large differences in performance when new. But these differences are very much accentuated once a tyre is worn, in the latter stages of its life and even tyres with similar test results when new, can perform very differently over the life of the tyre. All the tyres on the road are worn and this is why Michelin believes we should be testing worn tyres, and is calling on industry test bodies, and consumer organisations to start comparing and testing tyres when they are worn to the legal limit and establish a minimum threshold for worn tyre performance and safety. Dry braking improves as the tyre wears, stopping up to 10 per cent shorter, and the rolling resistance reduces by up to 20 per cent. In fact on dry roads, the closer the tyre is to the legal limit the safer you are, and the more fuel you save. So, when calling for worn tyre testing, Michelin wants to test wet braking, as this is the main tyre performance that deteriorates as a tyre wears. WET BRAKING TEST - NEW VERSUS WORN TYRES Some performances actually improve as tyres wear notably dry braking and rolling resistance. However, the stopping distance on wet roads deteriorates as a tyre wears and this is the Michelin focus. It is important to stress that we are NOT saying that a tyre will stop as short in the wet when worn wet braking performance WILL deteriorate as a single tyre wears. However, what we ARE saying is that the remaining tread depth is not solely relevant it is the overall tyre design that matters for wet braking distances on wet roads. To demonstrate the fact that it is a design choice by the manufacturers, we conducted the industry standard wet braking test with one tyre, worn to the legal limit against another brand of new tyre. The worn tyre braked 3.4 metres shorter than the other new tyre*. This demonstrates quite an extreme case but highlights perfectly the design choice of manufacturers. A worn tyre performs and grips better than a new tyre, apart from in the wet and here some worn tyres are better than other tyres when new. Wet braking is the main safety performance that deteriorates as the tyre wears, so this is what should be tested. Safety and wet braking distance is a design choice and the result of the whole tyre performance NOT the tread depth. That is why Michelin is calling for the testing of tyres when worn. *The test took place in May 2018 at the ATP Automotive Testing site in Papenburg, Germany, in the presence of independent observers, who confirmed the correct execution of the test procedure for the tyre size 205/55R16 91W. 1 2

4 WHAT TEST FOR WET BRAKING PERFORMANCE? Defined by the ETRTO (The European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation) there is an industry standard wet braking tyre test. This industry standard test is known as the R117 test and is used for the European tyre labelling tests and to define the European threshold the minimum standard for a tyre to be sold in Europe. It is also used for regulations in Russia, Israel, Brazil and other countries. It is also integrated in a global compendium of test methods (GTR - Global Technical Regulation), adopted among others by China, India and the United States, pending a regulatory implementation in these countries. But what is this test more precisely? How does it work? This R117 wet braking test measures the distance for a vehicle to decelerate from 80 to 20 kilometres per hour on a standard road surface in 1 millimetre water depth, and has very clearly defined criteria including water depths, coefficient of friction of the road surface, water temperature, etc. This test is well established by the tyre industry for the testing of new tyres; Michelin is recommending that this same R117 test is applied for the testing of worn tyres, and to establish a minimum threshold for worn tyre performance. The industry standard R 117 wet braking test takes place in 1 millimetre deep water it may seem very low, a fraction of an inch, but is 1mm representative of real road conditions during a rainstorm? Is that a wet road or a damp road? What is the difference between a wet road or a damp road? When we look at whether a road is damp or wet, a big factor here is the roughness of the road surface. When there is a film of water covering the road, but not sufficient to fill the cavities, that road is considered to be damp. When water has filled all the cavities and the water starts to pool and build into a continuous surface of water, the road is considered to be wet. Some competitors communicate on tests carried out in much deeper water, up to 8mm. They certainly look impressive with huge plumes of water thrown out, but the same question applies: is this representative of real road conditions during a rainstorm? The fact is that 1mm deep water on a road only occurs following a heavy period of rainfall, and requires an intensity of 100 millimetres of rain per hour. This type of rain is typical of a heavy cloudburst that lasts for 10 to 15 minutes, so driving on a road with 1 mm of water is a very rare event. The two main factors that affect wet grip are the speed of the vehicle and the amount of water on the road. The tyre tread plays a major role in removing water from the contact patch to ensure the tyre has optimal grip with the road. The type of road surface will also affect the level of wet grip. The adherence of a tyre on wet surfaces involves two mechanisms: grip and hydroplaning. The grip, by the contact of the rubber on the road, allows good adherence levels, even on wet roads. Hydroplaning occurs when a vehicle drives very fast on a wet road; the water will exert a lifting force on the tyre and can gradually reduce the size of the tyre s contact patch on the road. This progressive hydroplaning process will reduce the vehicle s grip. Hydroplaning is often mistakenly thought to be a binary process either gripping or floating. Hydroplaning is actually a progressive and dynamic phenomenon, as the contact patch changes from 100 per cent contact/grip on the road, through stages to zero contact, or tyre floating. There is a fight between grip/traction and the lifting hydroplaning forces. During wet braking tests on tyres worn to the limit, both grip and hydroplaning mechanisms are present. THE UNLOCKED SECRETS OF WORN TYRES There are large differences in the performance of new tyres, and these differences are very much accentuated once a tyre is worn Well-designed tyres, when worn to the legal limit can brake and stop shorter on wet roads than some other new tyres. There is a well-established test for wet braking of new tyres, and a threshold for minimum performance; Michelin is recommending that this same R117 test be used for the testing of worn tyres. This R117 test evaluates tyre wet braking performance in rare but realistic wet road conditions. During testing on tyres worn to the limit, both grip and hydroplaning mechanisms are present. Michelin is calling on industry test bodies and consumer organisations to start comparing and testing tyres when they are worn to the legal limit, using the industry standard R117 test, and to establish a minimum threshold for worn tyre performance. 3 4

5 LONG LASTING TYRES SAFE WHEN NEW, SAFE WHEN WORN 1,6mm: What is it? This is the minimum remaining tread depth of a tyre in Europe and in many countries of the world. Michelin wants everyone to be able to use their tyres to this minimum tread depth. Michelin is committed to manufacturing tyres that perform all the way to the legal limit of the wear indicator, ensuring their mobility all year round, and keeping customers safe. With the tyre range, drivers are safe when the tyres are new, but also when they are worn. The Michelin Group presents 5 innovative new tyres designed to perform in all weather conditions, and be safe when new, safe when worn. A range of performance tyres for passenger cars, SUVs, vans and commercial vehicles that grip in all weather conditions and on all road surfaces. - CrossClimate + and CrossClimate SUV tyres - The PRIMACY 4 tyre - The ALPIN 6 tyre - The AGILIS CrossClimate tyre All these tyres feature the latest Evergrip technology that maintains the tyres efficiency throughout their life; it achieves this with: A regenerating tread pattern: grooves emerge and widen with tyre wear An optimized tread pattern: more vertical grooves High-quality rubber compounds: a multilayer tread with the latest generation compounds This range is Michelin s answer to the expectations of consumers who want to ensure they are safe throughout the life of the tyre, to save money by using them to the legal limit of tread wear, and also increased fuel economy due to the reduced rolling resistance. 6 CrossClimate + The CrossClimate+ tyre combines the best in summer and winter tyre technology, while guaranteeing a high level of performance over time. It meets the needs of drivers by offering the best characteristics of a summer tyre and a winter tyre. When new, the traction of the CrossClimate + on snow is the same level as the main all-season premium tires (1). When worn state, snow traction is equivalent to that of the same allseason premium tires, but when they are still at an intermediate wear level (2). From the first to the last kilometer, its performance therefore changes very little, when that of its premium competitors falls very significantly. In summer, the CrossClimate + also offers high-performance on dry roads (3), equivalent to a summer tire, where a winter tire s performance degrades. THIS COMBINATION OF PERFORMANCE IS DUE TO THE JOINT ACTION OF THREE KEY INNOVATIONS: AN INNOVATIVE TREAD RUBBER COMPOUND, A UNIQUE TREAD PATTERN, AND HIGH PERFORMANCE SIPES. A rubber compound with an innovative composition The flexibility of the rubber compound provides maximum grip, regardless of temperature. In addition, the CrossClimate + features rigid and chamfered tread blocks, ensuring optimum safety on dry roads. This rigid design and bevelling of the tread blocks improve braking on dry ground. A unique tread pattern for better mobility on snow TThe V tread pattern maximizes the rack effect on the snow throughout the tyre s life. This tread pattern also contributes to the improved life of the tyre: the CrossClimate+ lasts longer than the Energy Saver+, the benchmark in the summer tyre market. That s 25% longer than the average of all-season premium tyres. High-performance sipes for safety and mobility in all weather conditions The CrossClimate+ features both full-depth 3D sipes for long-lasting mobility on snow, and these are also self-locking for effective braking on dry ground. In addition, as the tyre wears, new grooves emerge in the tread to retain traction on snowy ground, up to the last kilometre. PRIMACY 4 Safe when new, safe when worn a high level of performance on wet roads True to its Mission of sustainably improving customer mobility and safety, Michelin presents the latest update to its PRIMACY range: the new PRIMACY 4 tyre. After three years of development, this tyre provides a high level of performance on wet roads, from new until worn to the legal wear indicator (1.6mm). This tyre answers the need to perform at a high level when worn; a long lasting performance. Thanks to latest generation elastomers, the new PRIMACY 4 tyre delivers very high levels of grip, from the first to the last kilometre, without compromising longevity. To achieve this level of grip, the tread pattern has been optimized: it has a new design that reveals squarer and less tapered grooves, to help improve water clearance even when the tyre is worn. Thus, both when new and worn, PRIMACY 4 offers an excellent level of performance in braking on wet roads. When compared to competitor tyres in the 205/55 R16 91V size the new PRIMACY 4 tyre brakes, on average, 0.9m shorter than its direct competitors. And when worn, the PRIMACY 4 brakes 2.8m shorter than the average of the competitor tyres (1) (2). The new PRIMACY 4 tyre also simplifies the reading of its wear level. In addition to the presence of a traditional wear indicator on the shoulder, it also has a Michelin marking at the bottom of the tread grooves. These two methods allow users to quickly and simply identify how worn their tyres are. Compared to its direct competitors, the new PRIMACY 4 lasts an average of 18,000 kilometres (3) more; confirming the long lasting performance of the new tyres designed by Michelin. The new PRIMACY 4 tyre is a concrete example of the Michelin Group s strategy: consumers must be able to drive safely, throughout the life of the tyre, right down to the legal wear indicator of 1.6 mm. PRIMACY 4 has been launched in 64 sizes in January The CrossClimate+ has been available since 1 January 2017, for 15 to 18 inch rim diameters. 7 Alpin 6 For long lasting performance in extreme winter conditions Agilis CrossClimate For an All-season mobility In preparation for the winter of 2019, Michelin has launched the latest generation of dedicated passenger car winter tyre for the European market, the Alpin 6. The new tyre boasts excellent traction, acceleration and braking performance on snow both when new and worn and has a long tyre life, lasting on average 20% longer than the premium competitors*. The Alpin 6 is targeted at demanding and knowledgeable consumers who require mobility whatever the weather and road conditions. The Alpin 6 delivers an industry leading performance when new, but really demonstrates its superiority when worn. Tests conducted by the TÜV SÜD* demonstrated that the Alpin 6 when worn stops 5.9 metres shorter on snow than the average of competitors, and also has better snow traction on slopes. This capability when worn comes from the introduction of an evolving and regenerating high void ratio tread pattern with three new innovations and technologies. These are: 3D self-locking teardrop sipes, which allow grooves to emerge and widen as the tyre wears increasing water and snow clearance, and improving grip. A new chamfer chamber at the base of grooves to trap snow and create additional snow-on-snow grip for improved traction and braking. Multi-layer tread compounds so that as the tyre wears, the rubber compound changes to ensure tread flexibility and winter/snow grip whatever the tread depth. The new tyre does not have a winter wear indicator at 4mm as it performs right down to the 1.6mm tread depth limit. It does however feature a new tread wear indicator which gives an easily read percentage of the remaining tread at 75%, 50%, and 25%. In fact the launch of the Alpin 6 range continues the range of Michelin products with long lasting performance tyres that are safe when new and safe when worn. Michelin is extending its award winning* CrossClimate range into light truck and van with the launch of Agilis CrossClimate. It is a summer tyre with a complete winter capability, and heralds a new generation of high performance van and light truck tyres with no mobility compromises in winter conditions, as well as on mud and grass. The tyres also boast high mileage and low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), safety in all weathers, robustness and damage resistance. The new tyre is designed and conceived from end-user feedback gathered over the last 10 years, and delivers their two crucial demands a single tyre fitment that delivers all year round mobility in all weather conditions with a robust and damage resistant sidewall. It does this with a rugged tread pattern, made with innovative new rubber compounds and specific new features for sidewall and shoulder protection. The 3PMSF marked Agilis CrossClimate tyre is certified for use in snow conditions, but still behaves, brakes and lasts like a summer tyre on dry roads. This is due to the latest rubber; compounds which deliver tread flexibility, even at freezing temperatures and a multilayer tread area which minimises heat transfer through the tyre. Inspired by the award winning* CrossClimate+ car tyre, the V-shaped tread pattern includes an innovative combination of high-tech tread blocks. These contain bi-directional self-locking sipes to provide cutting edges which bite into snow and ice; for optimum grip on difficult winter surfaces. This combination of new tread rubber and the V-shaped tread pattern deliver grip in all conditions, but also an increase in tyre life which is 35 per cent** more than the average of premium competitors tested. The increased damage resistance demanded by users is achieved through the addition of 1.5mm deep trapezoidal blocks around the shoulder and upper sidewall. These and the rubber they use are features taken from Michelin s military all-terrain truck tyre range and give added protection, without compromising casing flexibility. 8 TRACK CONNECT The first connected tyre on the market to enhance your circuit driving experience Track Connect will assist the driver before, during and after circuit runs. In 2018, Michelin became the first manufacturer to market a connected tyre solution in for passenger cars. This solution is for amateur drivers who want to increase their performance on circuits during track days. Why: On the circuit, after a few laps, the individual pressure of each tyre will increase according to the circuit, the car and the type of driving. This has the effect of severely degrading vehicle performance and tyre wear.. WHAT PRESSURE TO PUT IN EACH TYRE? Every driver has always dreamt to have a Michelin engineer by their side! Track Connect can actually make this dream come true by helping the driver with customised, informed advice about adjusting tyre pressures to improve performance and driving fun. BEFORE The application recommends the most suitable pressure for the vehicle s tyres and for the driving conditions: dry circuit, damp circuit, or wet circuit. DURING AFTER Track Connect will give the driver real-time information about the pressure and temperature of each of the vehicle s four tyres. The sensors inside the tyre can accurately measure the pressure and temperature of the tyres and will analyse any changes in the data as the vehicle goes around the circuit. Based on those parameters, the smartphone application acts as an interface for the driver and will guide them as they optimise the calibration of the tyre pressure. The information is also put into context to help the driver interpret it correctly. For instance, with Track Connect, the driver is in a position to know whether their tyres are operating within optimal limits according to the run s driving conditions as defined by the driver (dry circuit, damp circuit, wet circuit). It is also possible for the driver to see how their vehicle is behaving (oversteering or understeering) according to the analysis of changes in the balance between front and rear tyre pressures. Track Connect will indicate what adjustments need to be made before returning to the circuit. In order to provide a finer analysis, all of the information is stored and may be accessed at a later stage so the driver may examine their performance and that of their tyres between two runs. Under intensive use on a circuit, the brakes are subjected to heavy demand and send a lot of heat to the rims. This can disrupt pressure measurements taken at the valve and so make the adjustments less accurate. Because of this, Michelin has chosen to position a sensor inside the tyre to make sure that the recorded tyre temperature is reliable and accurate. This positioning of the sensor is protected by a patent. The sensors send information to a receiver placed inside the vehicle, so there is no need for any professional to intervene or for any tool to be used. The receiver then sends the information to the driver s smartphone, where the appropriate application has been installed

9 My RUNS is used by the pilot to browse his history and retrieve all information about his past runs. The runs are sorted by circuit. my GARAGE is used to declare and configure the pilot s vehicle(s) that are equipped with Pilot Sport Cup2 Connect tyres. The pilot may add or delete a vehicle at any time. The START button is used to start up his connected run experience. The Track Connect solution has been specifically developed with the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 connect tyre with 11 sizes available in THE CIRCUITS is used to retrieve information about the various tracks and circuits that are preloaded in the app. It can also guide the pilot to the circuit he chooses from the menu. It is a concept that also perfectly describes the 4 elements of our 4R strategy Airless, made only from sustainable materials (recycled and renewable), connected, intelligent and customisable, the concept takes centre-stage on Michelin s stand at the Mondial Paris. Designed to meet the exacting demands of future generations of motorists, the concept is at the heart of Michelin s vision for the future of sustainable mobility and is already driving the development of products being refined by Michelin s industry-leading R&D teams today. One of Vision s most important advances is that it is entirely airless, using instead a revolutionary alveolar (or honeycomb) structure inspired by nature to support the vehicle, offering unique, advanced levels of safety, comfort, sustainability and longevity. This breakthrough will be possible through the cutting edge development of new, high-performance ingredients derived from a range of natural products including straw, wood-chips, sugar residue, recycled household products and even orange peel. All of which were chosen for their low environmental impact. The new world first Vision concept is also entirely customisable, allowing motorists to have their tyre s tread pattern renewed at drive-in 3D printing centres adapting it for winter snow, summer highways or for off-road driving, it lasts just as long as the car itself. You might think it s a dream and you re right; it s a long term dream, but a realistic dream, said Terry K Gettys, executive Vice President, R&D at Michelin. It will take years for us to develop the whole tyre, which will be totally recyclable and with a biodegradable tread. Other breakthroughs on the Vision concept, which is protected by 19 different patents covering the production process right through to materials, are that its organic core does away with the need for a wheel altogether and that being airless, it will be 100 per cent puncture-proof. Thanks to high-tech sensors built into Vision similar to those already fitted to some Michelin tyres it will also be connected, informing motorists in advance, in real time via an app or , when the tread needs re-configuring through everyday wear and tear, to optimise safety and comfort. Because of Michelin s revolutionary 3D printing process, manufacturing and re-configuring of Vision will use the minimum amount of rubber, massively reducing the amount of materials and energy needed in these processes. Vision is the result of extensive focus groups with over 90 global contributors from the worlds of racing, agriculture and motoring, and calling on the experience of airline pilots, heavy plant drivers and even children to discover what they will demand from the ultimate tyre of the future.
