1 2005 XC90 Tune-up (5-cyl) Including: Oil Change - Spark Plugs - Fuel Filter - Cabin Filter First off - let me say that I am an amateur (at best) mechanic, and I claim no responsibility for whatever you do to your car. This is simply what I did and hope that it will help you if you are new to the repairs. Oil Change You will need to block your wheels and jack the front of the car up, be sure to use jack stands for safety. 1 - Remove the protective skid plate that covers the oil and transmission pans. If I remember right there are either 8 or 9 bolts holding it on. It is easiest if you remove all the outside bolts first and get the one remaining (center) last. 2 - In the Photo below you see 3 arrows, on the left is the transmission drain plug (if you are going to do a drain/refill), center is oil drain plug, right is the bottom of the filter housing. YOU MAY WANT TO FIRST TRY TO LOOSEN THE FILTER HOUSING. I usually remove the plug first, which is what I did this time, only after I drained all the Oil I broke the filter wrench I had bought. Once you know you can get the filter housing off, remove the oil drain plug and drain oil. Replace drain plug using new aluminum crush washer. Remove the filter housing and old filter/o-ring. Place new filter and O-ring in canister, fill with oil and tighten into place, just hand tight should be fine. Fill with appropriate amount of oil. Above: view of the filter canister

2 Spark Plugs 1 - The turbo line that goes front to back will need to be removed. What I did was just remove the clamp ring towards the front of the line (because it is easiest to get to), but there is also one at the back. If you can do what I did, loosen the front clamp and pull the plastic hose out of the rubber. This is a closer picture of that, you can see the clamp to the left and the right arrow is where the plastic hose (with notches) is removed from the rubber hose. 2 - You will need to remove the cover torx bolts. To remove a couple you will have to move the turbo hose to one side (ore if you removed both clamps just remove it). The left arrow is a little clamp you need to pull on to get the left cover off. There is one on the front and the back.

3 3 - Once the cover is off you will see the wires. Each arrow here represents the bolt you need to remove to get the wire off. There are 5 bolts (1 per wire) to be removed. The 5th is not visible because of the turbo line. 4 - Remove the bolts as shown, notice the arrow, this is a close up of the bolt to remove 5 - Once all the bolts are out you have access to the plugs, you now change as you would any other. The gap on the cyl. Turbo is.028. Check your manual if you have a different model or want to be sure

4 Cabin Filter 1 - Remove the 2 torx bolts under the glove box (all the torx are T-25) Take that panel out, you have to wiggle in from the carpeted paneling. 2 - Unscrew the 4 T-25 s on the black lid and remove black cover. The back two are a pain to get to because of the depth. I had to use a T-25 bit with a ratchet, but if you have a stubby t-25 (under 3 inches) it may fit. 3 - Slide filter out, mine had a lot of crap hat fell out with it so it was probably over due. Installation is reverse, the filter will have a tab on it so you can t put it in backwards or upside down. Takes about minutes.

5 Fuel Filter 1 - I don t have a picture of step 1, but what I did was start the car, open the fuse box and with the car running pull the fuel pump fuse out (fuse #21 or 22 I think). This will take the fuel pressure out of the system and limit your gas loss. 2 - After the gas stops and the car dies, turn off the key and get under the rear passenger door, this is where the filter is located. I suggest gloves as with all the undercoating stuff it is pretty greasy down there. 3 - If is the first filter change there will be black tape, very similar to masking tape that covers the quick release connectors. Remove that tape to expose the connectors. 4 - Remove the large bolt (pictured right with arrow), this is the only bolt to remove. This will open the bracket, be prepared as it is under some load and will spring out. 5 - This is the best step, because it is the first car I have had with quick release connectors. Pinch the connector and remove the hose from the filter on each side. Have something ready to put the filter in as it will spill gas 6 - Have the new filter ready and place in line the same way as the one you just removed, pinch the connectors to seat the hoses over the filer stubs. Installation is reverse of removal A few notes on installation: Remember how the bracket was in place, it only goes back one way. Also replacing the bolt was the hardest part of the entire job, you need a good amount of pressure to pinch the bracket around the filter and the bolt is short so that doesn t make it any easier. Also, I used masking tape over the quick connectors as you see in the photos, similar to how the original set up was, I assume this is to keep the connectors in tact and I would recommend covering them with something Ṫhis document created for and thanks to
