5 About this manual About this manual This instruction is an integral part of the product and contains important information for a safe and proper assembly, commissioning, operation, maintenance and help for easier trouble shooting. Before using the product, read and note the instructions, especially the chapter "Basic safety notes". 6 Basic safety notes Basic safety notes Intended use The module is exclusively designed for linear movement of useful loads into any desired position. The product is intended for installation in a machine/system. The requirements of the applicable guidelines must be observed and complied with. The product may be used only in the context of its defined application parameters ( 6, Page 15). Eine andere oder darüber hinausgehende Verwendung gilt als nicht bestimmungsgemäß. Für hieraus resultierende Schäden haftet der Hersteller nicht. 2.2 Environmental and operating conditions The module may be used only within its defined application parameters. ( 6, Page 15) Do not subject the module to excessive vibrations and/or mechanical shocks. Ensure that the environment is clean and the ambient temperature corresponds to the specifications in the catalog. Observe the lubrication intervals ( 9.1, Page 29) Ensure that the environment is free of splashing water and vapors, and also of abrasive dust and process dust. This does not apply to modules designed especially for unclean environments. Ensure that the environment is free of ferromagnetic particles or chips. Strong magnetic fields can impair the function of the module. If the product is to be used in strong magnetic fields, contact your SCHUNK partner ELM en

7 Basic safety notes 2.3 Product safety Dangers arise from the product, if: the product is not used in accordance with its intended purpose. the product is not installed or maintained properly. the safety and installation notes are not observed. Avoid any manner of working that may interfere with the function and operational safety of the product. Wear protective equipment. NOTE More information are contained in the relevant chapters Protective equipment Provide protective equipment per EC Machinery Directive Constructional changes, attachments, or modifications Additional drill holes, threads, or attachments that are not offered as accessories by SCHUNK may be attached only with permission of SCHUNK. 2.4 Personnel qualification The assembly, initial commissioning, maintenance, and repair of the product may be performed only by trained specialist personnel. Every person called upon by the operator to work on the product must have read and understood the complete assembly and operating manual, especially the chapter "Basic safety notes" ( 2, Page 6). This applies particularly to personnel only used occasionally, such as maintenance personnel ELM en 7

8 Basic safety notes 2.5 Notes on particular risks Generally valid: Remove the energy supplies before installation, modification, maintenance, or adjustment work. Make sure that no residual energy remains in the system. Do not move parts by hand when the energy supply is connected. Do not reach into the open mechanism or the movement area of the unit. Perform maintenance, modifications, and additions outside the danger zone. Secure the product during all operations against uncontrolled activation. Take a precautionary approach by maintenance and disassembly. Only specially trained staff should disassemble the product. WARNING Danger of injury due to falling or ejected objects! Provide protective means to prevent the falling or ejection of objects such as machined workpieces, tools, chips, debris, waste, etc. WARNING Danger of injury due to power outage! Modules can continue to move automatically in case of a power outage. Secure the end positions of the module with SCHUNK shock absorbers ELM en

9 WARNING Basic safety notes Danger of injury due to unexpected / dangerous movements of the machine/system! Do not move any parts by hand when the unit is connected to the power supply. Do not reach into the mechanical parts and the area of motion of the module. Remove the power supply cables prior to assembly, modification, maintenance and adjustment of the module. Carry out all maintenance, modifications or attachments outside of the danger zone. Secure module against inadvertent actuation during all work. WARNING Danger of injury due to heat build-up in components! During operation, components of the module can become very hot Allow module to cool before assembly, disassembly and repairs WARNING Danger of injury / damage due to electric voltages, currents and magnetic fields! The module and the corresponding drive controller are op-erated with voltages higher than 42 V. The secondary components integrated in the module are highpower permanent magnets! Never operate the module in case the insulation of cables or wires is damaged, for example, or if water or other conditions are present which could impair safe operation. The magnetic fields can affect electronic and electrical equipment. Persons with pacemakers or similar devices must stay away from the magnetic fields. Electronic assemblies, storage media, precision mechanical components and other magnetically interacting objects can be damaged ELM en 9

11 Scope of delivery 3 Warranty The warranty is valid for 24 months from the delivery date to the production facility under the following conditions: Intended use in 1-shift operation Observe the mandatory maintenance and lubrication intervals Observe the environmental and operating conditions Parts touching the work piece and wear parts are not part of the warranty. 4 Scope of delivery The scope of delivery includes: Linear axis ELM in the ordered model. 19 Assembly and settings 7.3 Electrical connection WARNING Danger from electric voltage! Touching live parts can result in death. Switch off the power supply before any assembly, adjustment or maintenance work and secure against being switched back on again. Only qualified electricians should performe electrical installations. Cover up live parts. Check if de-energized, ground it and hot wire. Use the specified cable sets and controllers. Consult your SCHUNK contact person if necessary ELM en 19

20 Assembly and settings 7.4 Assembly of position measuring system WSM The position measuring system is delivered in disassembled state and must be assembled as described in the following figure: Fig. 4 Mounting of position measuring system Designation WSM 23-H70 WSM 37-H... A Clearance of reading head from 0.3 ± ±0.1 magnetic tape [mm] B Position of magnetic tape [mm] 7 27,5 The bolting surfaces must be clean and undamaged and the support surface for the magnetic tape must be free of dirt and grease. 1 Bolt the sensor bracket (5) to the base body using cylindrical screws (4). 2 Bond the magnetic tape (1) flush with the outer edge of the module to the base body (self-adhesive) as in the Figure. 3 Bolt the magnetic sensor (3) to the sensor bracket (5) using cylindrical screws (2).and set the clearance from the reading head to the magnetic tape (A) ELM en

NOTE The module conducts the reference run only at a certain force. During the reference run the slide must always strike the internal stop (B). Set the shock absorber back far enough so that it does not serve as a stop ELM en 23

Secure threads with suitable chemical thread locking agent 3 Mount the pre-assembled unit consisting of the end plate (4), rod (3), disk (2) and nut (1) to the slide of the ELM using mounting screws (B). 4 Secure threads with suitable chemical thread locking agent! Consult your SCHUNK contact person. 8.2 The module does not travel through the entire stroke? Possible cause Accumulation of dirt between the rotor and the stator Mounting surface is not even enough Components have become loose e.g. through over-loading. Corrective action Clean and grease the rotor. dismantle and clean module, if necessary ( 9.2, Page 30) and ( 9.3, Page 31) Check the levelness of the bolting surface.( 7.1, Page 17) Send the module to SCHUNK with a repair order or disassemble module. and inspect ( 9.4, Page 32). 8.3 Electric signals are not transmitted? 29 Maintenance and care 9 Maintenance and care NOTICE The following recommendations apply if the unit is operated as intended in compliance with the specified operating parameters, operating conditions and settings. WARNING Danger of injury due to unexpected movements of the machine/system! Switch off energy supply. 9.1 Maintenance and lubrication intervals NOTICE At ambient temperatures above 60 C lubricants harden more quickly! Reduce interval accordingly. 31 Maintenance and care 9.3 Removing and cleaning rotor WARNING Danger of injury due to unexpected movements of the machine/system! Switch off energy supply. Fig. 12 Removing rotor 1 Loosen mounting screw (1) and remove 2 spherical washer/conical seat units (2) 2 Carefully pull rotor (3) back out of the stator (4). 3 Clean rotor (3) and inner surface of stator (4) with a soft cloth and alcohol. 4 Lubricate rotor ( previous Tab.) and carefully insert it in the stator. 5 Fasten rotor with mounting screw (1) and 2 spherical washer/conical seat units (2) 6 Check rotor (3) for smooth running; if necessary, loosen screw (1), push base body up to stop on end plate (5) and tighten again. NOTE Do not use hard brushes or organic solvents and cleaners other than alcohol! Secure threads with suitable chemical thread locking agent! ELM en 31

32 Maintenance and care 9.4 Dismantling the module WARNING Danger of injury due to unexpected movements of the machine/system! Switch off energy supply. NOTICE Sound technical knowledge is required for disassembly / assembly of the module. In case of damage and malfunctions, we recommend sending the module to the factory for repair. In case of unauthorized disassembly/assembly of the module, the SCHUNK warranty and guarantee will be voided. 1 Disassembly and assembly in accordance with the assembly drawing 2 Always comply with the generally applicable screw tightening torques! 3 Secure threads with suitable chemical thread locking agent!
