4. RADIUS OF BENDS Curved track is available with 90, 45, 30, 15 and 10 degree bends. The radius is 760mm. 5. WHAT IS THE DEFLECTION IN THE TRACK OVER DISTANCE? In accordance with the requirements of BS EN10535 (section 6.3) the maximum deflection of any horizontal track used in the construction of a hoist system shall not be more than 1mm in every 200mm of track length. 6. TRACK LENGTHS Wispa track is available in 2.5m (8ft) and 5m (16ft) lengths. Piggyback is a 100mm (4 ) deep, extruded aluminium box section, which the track slides into from either end. Piggy back is available in 5m (16ft) lengths only. 7. WHAT ARE THE SERVICE INTERVALS? Based upon British and European Standard BS EN and Health and Safety Executive guidance Chiltern Invadex recommend that hoists are fully serviced, including a load test, at least every 12 months with an interim six monthly inspection to Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER 1998) requirements. The frequency of servicing should be increased in areas where the environment (e.g swimming pools) or heavy usage may cause deterioration of the equipment. Further details can be obtained from any Chiltern Invadex Office, shown on the back of this Specifiers Guide. Chiltern Invadex and its Authorised Dealers are able to carry out all aspects of servicing and maintenance work. Maintenance of this equipment should only be conducted by engineers trained and certified by Chiltern Invadex. 8. CAN THE HOIST BE USED IN WET AREAS SUCH AS SWIMMING POOLS? Yes, but all fixings must be stainless steel. 9. HOW IS THE INSTALLATION LOAD TESTED? According to Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER 1998) a competent person should decide whether a test is necessary. Chiltern Invadex recommend a load test to 110% of the maximum load along the entire track length to ensure that the installation is installed securely. 10. PICK-UP POINTS The position of a ceiling track in relation to the pick-up point for a standard bed, profiling bed, toilet and bath is shown on page 12. 5

5. TRACK INSTALLATION ABOUT THE INSTALLATION OF CEILING TRACK HOISTS Ceiling track hoists can be installed into a variety of situations, including suspended ceilings, sloping roofs, flat roofs and concrete ceilings including hollow sections. Only a qualified person should undertake the installation of a Chiltern Invadex ceiling track hoist. The ceiling joists must always be of adequate strength to support the weight of the equipment and a patient. If unsure, a qualified Structural Engineers report should be obtained COMMON INSTALLATION METHODS The three most frequent methods of installation are: 1. Ceiling fixings 2. Wall fixings 3. Frames and gantry systems Further advice If in doubt about the strength of a wall or ceiling Chiltern Invadex recommend you seek the advice of a Structural Engineer TYPE OF CEILING FIXINGS This will depend on the structure of the building. The most common methods of ceiling fixing are: 1. Spanning ceiling joists when loft access is available 2. Between the floor fixings 3. Coach screwing to the joists 4. Fixing to concrete ceilings 24
5.0.3 CEILING FIXING GUIDE FOR WISPA TRACK Fixing Type Loft over (each fixing to span min 3 joists) Coach screwed to joists -minimum joist size 47mm (2") x 100mm (4") Maximum fixing centres 1500mm (59") 1500mm (59") upto * C oach screwed ceiling bars 1500mm (59") B etween floor fixings 1500mm (59") F ixings into concrete 1500mm (59") Curved sections (any ceiling fixing) 650mm T rack end overhang 250mm (10") Fixing from non load bearing joining bracket 250mm (10") each side All figures above are for /200 kg/272kg model hoists. * Above (31 stones) () a heavy duty gantry is recommended. The figures are dependent on the integrity of the structural design and construction as well as the strength of the material being fixed to. Consider: 1. Type and quality of every fixing/coach screw 2. Stress grading and ultimate condition of timbers/brickwork/steel 3. Ability of substructure to accept additional loading 4. Designed and calculated pullout resistance of the fixing The directions of the fixings manufacturer should be adhered to at all times RECOMMENDED NUMBER OF FIXINGS Ceiling track fixings of upto 2.5m should have a minimum of three fixings. All curved track section should have four fixings. 25

5.1 SPANNING CEILING JOISTS WHEN LOFT ACCESS IS AVAILABLE (SEE FIG 5.1) Ceiling joists, (ties) are not generally designed to carry anything like the load that might be imposed on floor joists. Older properties usually use approx. 50mm x 100mm timbers, while modern buildings use trusses prefabricated from even smaller section timbers. Neither would be considered suitable to accept coach screw fixings. The doubling up of wood bolted or screwed against each other is also not acceptable. The simple alternative is to suspend the track from unistrut or load spreading beams of at least equal strength. To span the joists with unistrut, you must first be able to gain access to the roof space above the room where the hoist is to be sited and secondly the ceiling must be of sound construction to take the weight of the hoist and patient. If in doubt about the strength of a ceiling, the advice of a structural engineer should be sought. TRACK RUNNING WITH JOISTS When the track is running with the joists, it is necessary to span a minimum of three joists per fixing. LOFTOVER Fig 5.1 Unistrut Nyloc nut Full nut Fish plate Washer Spacer Bracket Track Ceiling Screwed rod 28
TRACK RUNNING ACROSS THE JOISTS If the track is running across the joists, then the same method of fixing described previously can be employed, except that instead of one piece of unistrut being used, a number are used at angles to provide the required support. See drawing figure 5.2. Fig 5.2 M12 Threaded bar 2 x M12 Nuts M12 Form C Washer Unistrut Screw Screw Track Screw Screw Unistrut Screw M12 Threaded bar 2 x M12 Nuts M12 Form C Washer Screw M12 Threaded bar 2 x M12 Nuts M12 Form C Washer PLAN Unistrut P1000T OBSTRUCTIONS TO ABOVE FIXING METHODS If there is pipe work or any other obstacles running on top of the joists where the unistrut should lie, then it is necessary to bridge them either using timber or unistrut. 29
5.2 BETWEEN FLOOR FIXINGS This type of installation method is used when the hoist tracking is to be installed in a room that has floor joists above it but coach screw fixing is not appropriate. There are two methods of fixing between floors, either from above or below. TRACK RUNNING IN LINE WITH JOISTS After determining the position of the track on the ceiling, it is then necessary to work out by measurements which floorboards in the room above have got to be taken up, as Fig 5.3. TRACK RUNNING ACROSS JOISTS (USING A 90 DEGREE BRACKET) If the track is running with the joists, then the brackets can be evenly spaced and worked out from below, then for each fixing it will be necessary to bridge between two 90 degree brackets, as Fig 5.4. Fig 5.3 Flooring Joist hanger Nyloc nut Full nut Fishplate Screwed bolt Ceiling Unistrut Fig 5.4 Screwed bolt Screwed rod Joist hanger Joist Bracket Track Ceiling If the track is running across the joists then the bracket spacing is determined by the positions of the joists. Not every joist has to be used. This must be assessed during a site visit. 30
5.3 COACH SCREWING TO THE JOISTS Subject to the size and strength of the timber joists, a track may be suspended below them using 100mm x10mm (4" x 3/8") coach screw fixing. Fixings should never be made to timber less than 50mm (2") wide and 100mm (4") deep. Suitability of timber of this size and over should be assessed by a competent person. The doubling up of wood by bolting or screwing blocks against the joist where the coach screw fixing is located, is not acceptable. The joist MUST be one solid piece of wood. If in any doubt about the strength of a ceiling, the advice of a structural engineer should be sought. 31
5.4 TRACK RUNNING WITH THE JOISTS (SURFACE UNISTRUT) The track can still be fixed when running in the same direction as the joists but should never be suspended from just one joist. This can be either suspended or flush, as Figs 5.5a/5.5b White coated unistrut bars must be used to spread the load. They can be laddered along the track length. Each unistrut bar is fixed using 100mm x 10mm (4 x 3/8 ) coach screws to the joists on each side of the track run. The track brackets are then fixed to the underside of the unistrut using Zebidee nuts and M10 x 40 screws end caps and closure strips are then fitted to give a neat appearance. A minimum of three unistrut bars (six fixings), spaced as specified in the fixing table should be used (see Page 25). Fig 5.5a Suspended fixing Fig 5.5b Flush fixing 32
5.5 FIXING TO CONCRETE CEILINGS Track must never be fixed to the timber batons supporting the ceiling below a concrete soffit. The type of fixing will depend on the type of concrete soffit, of which there are many: Precast slab e.g Bison Pre-stressed slab Pre-stressed beams and block infill Reinforced concrete Hollow slab Clay pot floor Waffle slab and drop beams An independent structural appraisal/assessment of the soffit should be sought to determine the required fixings. Chiltern Invadex have successfully used fixings manufactured by Fischer, who offer support and pull out load testing. 33
5.6 SUSPENDED FIXINGS/CEILINGS (TYPICAL) If the track has to be suspended any distance below the ceiling, i.e. if the room has a false ceiling, suspended fixings can be used. Unistrut channel may be fixed as appropriate and the track brackets may then be suspended on M12 threaded rods, as Fig 5.6. A spacer sleeve of steel or aluminium box or tube should be used between the unistrut and track bracket; diagonal bracing may also be required to stop the track from moving laterally. 36 5.7 WALL FIXINGS Wall fixings are often used when it is not possible to fix to the ceiling, the construction of the wall must be determined by the surveyor to ensure the correct type of fixing is appropriate. The track can span up to 2.5m (8 feet) with a maximum working load of 280lbs (s) as Fig 5.7. The same load can be lifted on spans of up to 5m (16 feet) if the track is stiffened with piggyback. Piggyback is a 100mm (4 ) deep, extruded aluminium box section, which the track slides into from either end. For loads of up to s (31 stones) (s) the track should not span more than 2m (6 6 ) or, if stiffened with piggy back, 3m (10 ). When the track plus the piggyback is used, the track can be cut 250mm (10 ) shorter than the piggyback to enable easier fitting and removal of the hoist. 39 6. X-Y SYSTEM First install parallel tracks, which can be fitted to walls or ceilings using the methods previously described. It is most important that the two tracks are parallel to within + or 3mm (1/8 ). At each end of the parallel tracks allow 350mm (14 ) clearance for installing the X-Y carriage unit, bracket-fixing centres will depend on the ceiling structure. Shower Changing bench Bidet WLB Hoist Charge point Travelling track Fixed track W.C. Fixed track Charge point Bath Two docking points are provided, which can be connected together in parallel and powered from one charger. Observe the direction of the recharging hook up contacts to ensure correct position of the charger docking points. 38
6.1 X-Y SYSTEMS The X-Y to Mono Transfer System maximises room coverage, reducing the need for the manual handling of patients. The system is configured to connect an X-Y System to a mono track, allowing the hoist to travel through a doorway and to other rooms or to join another X-Y sytem. A simple lever operation (shown below) allows the hoist to travel from one track layout to another without the need for an electrical system. The system can be fixed to the ceiling as a permanent fixture, or as an alternative can be operated using a free standing gantry system (when structural problems make it difficult to fix track). Maximum load of 272 kgs (42 stones) (598lbs). 41 7. TURNTABLES (POWERED AND MANUAL) The turntable is ideal for situations where junctions are required in a track or when a track turn is required that the standard curved sections cannot accommodate. The tracks that meet the turntable must be at 90 degrees to one another. Suitable for all hoists except the Wispa Portable. Maximum load 272kg (42 stones) (598 lbs). 7.1 MANUAL TURNTABLE Fixing types will depend on the structure, generally the same type as used to fix the track will be suitable. It is important to decide in which corner the strings that operate the turntable (manual model) are going to be situated, it is common practice to ask the client where they would like them and advise accordingly. The turntable can then be offered up to the ceiling and the positions of the four corner fixing points marked. The manual turntable is available with 1 metre of track as standard, as shown below. 1.0 metre standard (cut to length on site) TURNTABLE FIXING METHOD (plan view shown on page 41) Noggins at 284 centres 40

7.2 POWERED TURNTABLE The hoist is driven onto the turntable, which then provides power to the unit through the ceiling track hoist. No independent power supply is required and the hoist can be rotated in 90 degree increments. Offers greater control, without the need to leave a client unattended in a sling while the direction of travel is changed. It is operated by push button controls on the handset. Note: A modified hoist needs to be supplied with the powered turntable. Suitable for all hoists except the Wispa Portable. The unit is powered by a small DC motor for safe, low voltage operation. Maximum load 272kg (42 stones) (598 lbs). Manufactured and tested in accordance with relevant sections of BS EN ISO The powered turntable is available with 1 metre of track as standard, as shown below. 45 8. MODULAR AND HEAVY DUTY GANTRY SYSTEMS Normally a ceiling track hoist would be fitted to the ceiling as specified in previous sctions of this guide, but the construction of some rooms can make the fixing of a system difficult. 8.1 MODULAR GANTRY SYSTEMS To overcome a plasterboard false ceiling a Modular Gantry system is a practical answer. Featuring wall and floor brackets, allowing the gantry legs to be positioned mid-wall, and additional legs to straddle windows and doorways, the Gantry system offers maximum flexibility, resolving many construction anomalies. It can support users up to s (30 stones) () over a four-metre span, providing the floor construction is adequate (above this weight a heavy duty gantry system is required). Please contact Chiltern Invadex to arrange a site visit. ADDITIONAL OPTIONS It can also be positioned to allow the hoist to traverse at an angle across the room, for example from a bed to a toilet, or to accommodate the room layout. The offset leg option enables obstructions such as pipework or skirting boards to be cleared. Legs are 50mm (2 ) box section painted steel with aluminium track. Typical 3 support leg installation to clear window or doorway features 44
8.2 HEAVY DUTY GANTRY SYSTEMS (INCLUDING BARIATRIC SYSTEMS FOR EXTREMELY HEAVY CLIENTS) Gantry systems are used in situations where it is not possible to hang the track from the ceiling and the room walls, i.e. stud partition walls. Gantry frames are made to suit a specific job and can be supplied in a range of shapes and sizes. When using gantry frames, it is important to make sure that they are secured to either wall, floor or both, depending on the circumstances of the installation. Heavy duty gantry systems allow for the safe moving and handling of clients upto 272kg (42 stones) (598lb) using a single 300 Series hoist or upto 445kg (70 stones) (980lb) using two 300 series hoists in tandem. Extremely heavy applies to clients who weigh in excess of 25 stones (159kg). A Guide to Managing the Moving & Handling Requirements of Extremely Heavy Clients is available on request. Illustration shows a single hoist with heavy duty gantry capable of lifting 272kg (42 stones). The gantry is fully free standing and is not designed to be fitted to the structure of the property. Heavy duty gantry with mono track Normal size restrictions are 5 metres (16ft) x 5 metres (16ft), although this will vary according to the maximum weight capacity of the hoist/hoists being used. Legs are 100mm (4 ) box section painted steel with aluminium track. Heavy duty gantry with X-Y 45
9.0 ELECTRICAL INFORMATION ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES TO WISPA HOISTS Important the electrical docking points should not be used as a stop end, due to their plastic construction, always fit an aluminium stop end block behind each docking point. In most cases, the hoist systems wiring is taken from the premises existing power circuit, although this only involves basic wiring, every care must be taken to ensure that all wiring and connections conform to the current regulations and local codes. It is important to check and consult with the client as to the positioning of any switches and routes of any trunking. All electrical work must be carried out by a competent electrical engineer in accordance with the current edition of IEE Wiring Regulations. WIRING FOR ALL HOIST MODELS Some hoists are all fed via a transformer which has an output of 24v DC (8 Amp max) via a curly cable. No point on the track should be more than 2.3 metres or less than 0.6 metres from the outlet. Wherever possible, surface wiring should be kept to a minimum and it is usual to conceal the transformer out of sight, e.g. in the loft space, and to feed the hoist via an outlet plate sited near to the track in a central position. TYPICAL ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION Junction Box Switch Fused Spur Charge Unit BATHROOMS Note: Chargers and transformers must be installed to IEE wiring regulations. 46
SERIES BATTERY CHARGER Dimensions are in mm and for guidance only /300 SERIES BATTERY CHARGER Dimensions are in mm and for guidance only 10. SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE Based upon British and European Standard BS EN and Health and Safety Executive guidance Chiltern Invadex recommend that hoists are fully serviced, including a load test, at least every 12 months with an interim six monthly inspection to Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER 1998) requirements. Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER 1998) were made under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974); LOLER (1998) applies to any item of lifting equipment, including existing equipment, second hand or leased equipment and new equipment and relates to the positioning, installation, structural strength of the equipment and the planning, organisation and carrying out of lifting operations and the thorough inspection and examination of equipment. 47
