ISWA International Waste Manager Associate Member of ATEGRUS Geesinknorba Spain is celebrating twenty five years of manufacturing their range of Kiggen portable and static compactors this year. The Kiggen compactor range has been sold in Spain from the early 1980 s and since its range of portable and static compactors was so successful (built to customers bespoke designs), the company decided in 1989 to open a new production centre in Seville. Covering an area of 5000m3 the facility can manufacture six hundred Kiggen compactors a year. The facility serves the home market, Portugal and Morocco as well as Latin American and other European countries. Kiggen Portable compactors The smallest portable compactor Kiggen manufacture is the EC Compact of three cubic metres capacity and propelled by batteries. It has two rear wheels so can be pulled by the operative to the source of the waste by an articulated trolley. It

2 makes an excellent portable compactor for collecting market and shopping centres waste. In 2009, Barcelona purchased eighteen for use in their market. Once the EC Compact is full, it can be emptied by the Geesinknorba G Series with a GAC2510 industrial lift. It has two DIN lifting pins on each side for the GAC2510 industrial lift so that the contents can be emptied into the hopper of the G Series rear loader. The factory also produces the Kiggen SWP range of portable compactors, with capacities from six to twenty cubic metres. These are suitable for transportation on a conventional skip loader vehicle or hook lift roll on off vehicle. The SWP range comes with a loading door and is suited for a wide range of municipal, commercial and industrial wastes. It is fully waterproof and retains any leachates produced by the compaction of the wastes. The larger range of PD 725, 731 and 745 portable compactors are also produced in the factory. The PD725 and PD729 units are available in a range of cubic capacities from 6 10 cubic metre which can be carried on a conventional two axle skip loader vehicle. The PD731 and PD745 models are available in capacities of cubic metres capacity. They include an A frame for transport using a hook lift roll on - off vehicle in two, three, four or, in some instances, a hook lift roll on - off trailer. This range comes with a wide range of loading options including conventional hand loading, loading with a lifter using comb bar to lift 120lts 1100lts DIN containers as well as Trunnion Arms to lift 660lts and 1100lts containers using the DIN pins. A final alternative is a top loading option using the PD 745 unit, popular for use as a transfer station for the reloading of municipal wastes delivered

3 by the smaller Rossi or larger G and N Series range of Geesinknorba waste collection vehicles. This option is an efficient way to transfer waste to the disposal point many miles out of a town or city, thus helping to provide a sustainable waste management system for the community. PD 725, 731 and 745 portable compactors are available in a wide range of capacities from 6 cubic metres up to the largest, which is 27.5 cubic metres in capacity. The range is operational in Spain where fifty three units were supplied to Mercabarna in Barcelona for the transfer of organic and recyclable waste. The Kiggen portable compactors have also been supplied by Geesinknorba Spain to Morocco for use in collecting market and other wastes. Geesinknorba Spain has supplied two hundred Kiggen portable compactors for its home market as well as in the United Arab Emirates for the collection of waste at street level as well as for use in underground container collection systems. Kiggen fixed truck mounted compactors Geesinknorba Spain also manufactures the Kiggen PTO range of compactors at their Seville production plant. This unit is top loading and is a permanent fixture on a conventional truck chassis from 15 tonne two axle up to 26 tonne three axle configurations. The loading of the PTO uses a truck mounted crane either fitted behind the cab or mounted to the roof of the PTO unit. A wide range of waste streams can be loaded, for example, residual waste, food waste, paper and cardboard recyclables, plastic recyclables as well as commercial and industrial

4 wastes. The high compaction ratio of this unit achieves a high payload when collecting a wide variety of waste streams. The Kiggen PTO compactor range comes in a wide variety of cubic capacities from 10 cubic metres up to 22.5 cubic metre capacities. Geesinknorba Spain have already successfully sold the PTO range of compactors to private contractor Urbaser for use in the collection of paper and cardboard and plastic recyclables for their contract in the province of the Costa del Sol. This unit is mounted onto a Volvo FES 6x2 rear steer 26 tonne chassis complete with the Allison 3000 Series automatic transmission. Private contractor Hermont in Malaga has also purchased a 22.5 cubic metre PTO mounted onto a Volvo FES 6x2 rear steer 26 tonne chassis complete with Allison 3000 Series automatic transmission too. This unit will be used for the collection of a wide variety of municipal wastes and dry recyclables throughout the Province of Malaga too. Geesinknorba Spain has also supplied a PTO unit of 22.5 cubic metres capacity to the Municipality of Granollers in Barcelona. This unit has been mounted onto a Renault Premium 340 DXI 6x2 rear steer 26 tonne chassis complete with the Allison 3000 Series automatic transmission and will be used to collect municipal waste and dry recyclables e.g. paper and cardboard and plastic recyclables throughout Granollers. 5 Kiggen also manufacture a wide range of static compactors for use in waste transfer stations. These have a high compaction ratio and can compact a wide variety of waste streams such as municipal, commercial and industrial wastes, food wastes as well as dry recyclables, for example, paper and cardboard and plastics. The Kiggen waste transfer stations are fully automated and Kiggen can produce the roll on - off containers to suit the aperture of their static compactors range. These containers are manufactured to a bespoke design to suit each customer s requirements, for example, the cubic capacity to suit the throughput of waste at the waste transfer station. Geesinknorba Spain has successfully built waste transfer stations for the processing of municipal, commercial waste, food waste and dry recyclables in Leon which was the first Kiggen static waste transfer station constructed in 1998 in Spain. Geesinknorba Spain has also constructed, three static waste transfer stations in Andalucia operated by Ferrovial Cespa at La Redondela near Isla Cristina which features one unit and Huelva and Almonte which feature two units. The company has also constructed two static compactor units at the waste treatment plant for Andalucia in Villarasa also operated by Ferrovial Cespa for the transfer of the reject fraction of the waste once all recyclables have been extracted. The company has built waste transfer stations in Cadiz and Navarra, as well as constructing two waste transfer stations in Alicante, one for municipal waste in San Vicente del Raspeig, the other at Alicante airport for the processing and efficient transfer of waste from tourists and airport businesses. Finally, the company has also constructed Kiggen waste transfer stations in the United Arab Emirates.

6 The Kiggen compactor range is made out of Domex, Hardox and Weldox steels so it is high wear resistant and can withstand processing the most abrasive waste streams. The electrics used are of a state of - the art design and have the latest self diagnostic system to analyse an electrical fault with a failsafe system to prevent operation of the equipment by unauthorised people. The equipment is fully CE marked and is sold to all European Union member states as well as to South America and the developing world. The Kiggen Portable compactor range can also be fitted, if requested, with a communication system as well as a GPS module so that, the compactors movements can be GPS tracked. Case Study: Delivery of twenty eight Kiggen PD 729 and PD731 portable compactors to the Municipality of Tias island of Lanzarote In 2013, the municipality of Tias awarded a ten year waste collection contract to Spanish private contractor Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas, S.A. (FCC), Spain s largest environmental services contractor. At the start of this new contract, Tias municipality purchased twenty eight Kiggen PD 729 and PD 731 portable compactors from Geesinknorba Spain. The order of seven PD 729 portable compactors of fourteen cubic metres capacity and twenty one PD 731 portable compactors of 25 cubic metres capacity are totally transforming the former waste collection system in the tourist resort of Puerto Del Carmen, replacing the former 800ltr and 1000ltr wheeled containers used at communal collection points.

7 The municipality, in conjunction with Geesinknorba Spain, has constructed new communal collection points for the new Kiggen compactors. These incorporate two steel strips for the Kiggen compactor s A frame to sit on to avoid damaging the concrete floor, and a drain and washing facility so that any liquid waste spilled can be washed away. Flood lights have been fitted to aid the loading of the compactors at night as well as to help the driver of the hook lift roll on - off vehicle when he collects the container for emptying at the waste treatment plant Zonzamas in the early hours each morning. So far, the municipality has constructed eighteen communal collection points which will help the municipality and its residents to provide a sustainable waste collection and transfer system for many years to come. Case Study: Kiggen PD125/20 1 Waste Transfer Station - Cadiz Waste management in Cadiz Province has caused many problems in recent years. Previously, a composting plant, owned by the Bay of Cadiz Consortium, treated waste from the cities of Cadiz and San Fernando and turned the waste into fertiliser. The plant, in the Puerto Real district, had been operational since 1972 but in 1992, a decision was made to close the composting lines because the infrastructure was out dated. Following this, the building became a waste transfer station. Waste collection vehicles deposited their loads, and the waste was loaded into open top walking floor trailers. Due to the inefficient use of the airspace in these trailers, the carrying capacity of them was uneconomic to deliver waste to the treatment centre at

8 Miramundo 40 kilometres away. Because of this problem, roll- on- off containers replaced the walking floor trailers. A drawbar roll- on- off with trailer could transport two containers to Miramundo, but a similar problem arose. Because the waste in the open top roll- on- off containers was not compacted, the maximum desirable tonnages could not be transported to the treatment facility. Effectively this interfered with the management of the waste transfer station, as well as increased pollution in the city, because the transfer vehicles had to make trips daily to Miramundo. The regional waste management plan was reviewed, which included the need to build a modern waste transfer station to process 110,000 tonnes of waste a year produced by the two cities. A contract was signed between Geesinknorba Spain and the Cadiz municipalities to build a waste transfer station in the duty free zone of the city. The plant is located on the outskirts of the city, but close to all main arterial roads for waste collection vehicles to be able to deliver their waste. Geesinknorba Spain came up with a long term sustainable solution. They supplied two of their Kiggen PD125/20 1 compactors giving a combined hourly throughput of 250 tonnes. In Cadiz, waste collection is carried out by Valoriza Servicios Medioambientales and in San Fernando by Urbaser. They use 22 cubic metre rear loading waste collection vehicles, and side loading vehicles of 25 cubic metres capacity. The design of the plant was based around each Kiggen compactor being able to handle a full eleven / twelve tonne load from these collection vehicles every four minutes without interfering with the operations of the waste collection services.

9 The waste collection service is carried out in Cadiz and San Fernando from midnight to 3am, seven days a week, 365 days a year. During the night, four waste collection vehicles arrive at the waste transfer station every fifteen minutes to empty their loads. On arrival, the vehicles go up the ramp and stop at a set of traffic lights, which regulate the flow of traffic through the peak period of deliveries. The vehicles go to the weighbridge, where all of the vehicles data, for example, collection contractor for the city the waste has arrived from, registration of the vehicle, driver s name and net payload, are all recorded. This data is sent to the control room in the facility. The vehicles drive to one of the two static compactors, the driver being informed at the weighbridge at which compactor to discharge their load. In the design phase of the facility, Geesinknorba Spain constructed the unloading apertures to both compactors of 70 cubic metre capacity. This was to handle a large number of waste collection vehicles arriving at the waste transfer station together, because in reality a waste collection vehicle will be full and making its way to the plant every three minutes through the night. The large hopper allows two waste collection vehicles to discharge their loads simultaneously into the unloading aperture, preventing a traffic problem of waste collection vehicles having to queue up to empty their loads in the small hours. Once the waste collection vehicles have discharged their loads, the Kiggen compactors compress the waste into hermetically sealed roll- on- off containers. To

10 make sure that the maximum load density is achieved, the Kiggen PD125/20 1 will penetrate the inside of the container so that the container can be sealed for transport to Miramundo. Once a container is full, the side arms which hold the container in position while compaction takes place, are released. The container is lowered onto the traverse moving frame and moved to the container collection area, its waste consignment and container position being logged in the control room. A fresh container is fitted to the compactor for the loading cycle to continue. The construction of the new waste transfer station has given the Cadiz municipalities a sustainable solution for the transport of their municipal waste for reprocessing. The plant has also improved the surrounding environment in many ways, for example, once the waste is delivered it is instantly compacted into air tight containers preventing odours which would otherwise be evident in the Mediterranean climate. A dust collection system constructed in the unloading area, protects both the environment and human health. Finally, a liquid extraction system has been constructed to collect and contain any liquids which may arise from the compaction process. This prevents liquids leaking into the water course as well as preventing foul odours. The Kiggen waste transfer station of Cadiz now provides a sustainable waste transfer system for all municipal and commercial wastes produced and transported to the facility by the municipalities of Cadiz and San Fernando. In conclusion, Geesinknorba Spain and Kiggen provide sustainable waste transfer systems either using their portable compactor range or static compactors for the

11 processing of a wide range of wastes. Geesinknorba Spain and Kiggen, having already sold five thousand Kiggen products in Spain, has orders for eight Kiggen portable compactors for South America and with other orders for Portugal, Spain and other European states has an assured economic future.
