2 Understanding Vacuum Understanding Vacuum A pump creates a vacuum by moving air from the cargo tank through the 4-way valve and out the exhaust muffler to the atmosphere A pump hose end allows air or liquid to rush into the cargo tank to replace air that has been moved out by the vacuum pump The vacuum relief valve protects the tank NOF recommends this procedure, provided it is in conformity with all applicable manufacturer s recommendations and it is consistent with corporate policy. It reduces the likelihood of unwanted drips and dribbles. Understanding Vacuum A vacuum moves materials from vessels into cargo tanks Loading is accomplished by lifting the material from a lower level to a higher level or moving material across relatively flat terrain Copyright

3 Lifting Capabilities of Vacuum Equipment The greatest elevation that a vacuum can lift is determined by a combination of factors The elevation of land surface at the job site (feet above sea level). This relates to air pressure on the liquid surface of the source vessel The diameter of hose used which relates to the resistance caused by friction Elevation change (height of lift ) from hose end s level to liquid level in the cargo tank Lifting Capabilities of Vacuum Equipment Liquid level in cargo tank and how close it is to being full Although the materials moved by vacuum are mostly liquid in nature, they move through the hoses and pipes as if they were one continuous solid stream. Solid, in this case, describes the manner in which they travel, not their state. Typically technicians intentionally introduce air into the hose end to speed the process of emptying the tank. 5 Vacuum Equipment A large diameter airtight opening in the tank that enables inspection and entry is the manway A cargo tank is a regulated confined space under OSHA regulations Entry into a cargo tank, especially through a manway, may require a confined space entry permit Vacuum Equipment Sliding Vane, Liquid Ring, and Rotary Lobe pumps are the most commonly used pumps Vacuum Equipment DRIVE MECHANISMS All pumps have the same drive options Any of three drive mechanisms may be installed to transmit the engine s power to the pump Copyright

6 Vacuum Equipment Each of these components can be configured in various ways to achieve the basic purpose of moving septage Self-propelled vehicles which include two or more axle straight trucks One and two axle trailers Skid mounted equipment The last two often have auxiliary engines to drive the pump usually a direct drive.
