1 Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE) is an Indian manufacturer of tractors and other farm equipment with its corporate headquarters in Chennai, India. The company was established in 1961, and has a reported annual revenue of $750 million and a sales volume of over 80,000 tractors annually. Background Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE) is a member of the $1.3 billion Amalgamations Group. TAFE is a renowned manufacturer of tractors and a variety of farm equipment under the TAFE, Massey Ferguson and Eicher brands. Their repertoire of farm equipment includes almost every accessory needed for the farmer. The company also manufactures Diesel engines,transmission components, Hydraulic Pumps,Panel Instruments, Engineering plastics, Dies, tools and Batteries. It has also acquired STF (Southern Tree Farms) and produces tea from these plantations, hence contributing substantially to the agri sector. It has recently added two new subsidiaries Al Pump Limited which manufactures automotive water and oil pumps and Kuduma Fasteners Limited that manufactures a range of fasteners for the industry. For Indian climate and soil conditions TAFE tractors are most suitable with minimal maintenance and low fuel consumption. TAFE also has the unique distinction of developing application specific tractors such as specialised tractors for vineyards, compressor applications and for deep puddling in paddy cultivation to name a few. Amalgamations Group also owns Simpson engines, which began by building licensed Perkins engines for the Indian market for use in the licensed-massey Ferguson tractors produced by TAFE. Both Perkins and Massey Ferguson were units of the Variety Corporation. The company is also planning to open a new assembly line in Madurai to meet the growing demand of its tractors world wide. TAFE acquired Eicher tractors in 2005 through a special purpose subsidiary company, TAFE Motors and Tractors Limited, which is a wholly owned subsidiary. It has major presence in some of the Indian states like Rajasthan and Uttar pradesh. Although Mahindra has been the market leader in tractors across India for last 25 years, Massey Ferguson has had a major market share in Rajasthan. One of the most popular models of TAFE's is the Massey Ferguson 1035 DI. Agco, the owner of Massey Ferguson, has a 24% stake in TAFE. TAFE's tractor group is the second largest manufacturer of tractors in the world by volume in the sub 100 HP category and is among the top ten tractor manufacturers in the world. TAFE has three manufacturing plants:- SEMBIUM(CHENNAI), MADURAI - only export models DODDABALAPUR(BANGALORE). Eicher has facilities in Bhopal, Alwar and Parwanoo. They have planned to start a plant in the Manisa Industrial Zone in Turkey in last quarter of financial year 08-09, and production began in the middle of ] With the cooperation from Indian Government, they are exporting tractors to more than 50 countries. The Early Years of TAFE The Amalgamations Group entered the tractor business in 1960. Simpson & Company was already making Perkins Diesel Engines and the founder chairman of the group, Mr.

6 The Early Years of TAFE The Amalgamations Group entered the tractor business in Simpson & Company was already making Perkins Diesel Engines and the founder chairman of the group, Mr. Anantharamakrishnan's own great interest in agriculture and the Green Revolution in making, made the group grab the opportunity to make tractors when it presented itself. Standard Motor Products of India Limited had been assembling Massey Ferguson tractors in India for Massey Ferguson India, which was a Bangalore based company handling the entire MF business in India. Massey Ferguson was looking for a company that would, in a phased manner, manufacture its tractors in India and successful negotiations with The Amalgamations Group lead to the group taking over the Bangalore operations and moving it to Chennai, then Madras. The new company was called Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited. On December 15, 1960, Mr. S. Anantharamakrishnan announced at a press conference at Chennai, his plans to manufacture tractors and implements at Simpson's Industrial Estate in collaboration with Massey Ferguson of Toronto. At that time, the estimated demand for tractors in India was tractors per year and TAFE was allocated a capacity of 7000 tractors a year. Initially 50% of the tractor was built with indigenous content but within two years this rose to 85%. From these early beginnings, we are proud to have risen to a turnover of US $1.6 billion and a sale of over 148,000 tractors (domestic and international) in the year , apart from the distinction of being India's largest exporter of tractors consecutively for the last three years.
