1 Puget Sound Antique Tractor & Machinery Association General Tractor Pulling Rules Operators of all tractors must be 16 years of age or approved by the pulling committee. 2- No consumption of alcoholic beverages by anyone in the track or pull area. If a pulling committee member believes any driver to be a potential safety hazard because of erratic behavior, or if they fail to heed a warning for his/her actions, the individual(s) will be barred from the event or the season. 3- Tractors can not exceed 5 miles per hour on the grounds. 4- Only authorized committee members, track officials, club officers, and pull contestants are allowed on the track during the pulling event. No helpers or children are allowed in the track area. 5- Drivers must register prior to the event and attend a drivers meeting that will be held within a half hour of start of the event. 6- Tractors must be in safe operating condition with working brakes. The driver s seat, standing platform and drawbar assemblies must pass a safety inspection. Tractors must be operated in a safe manner at all times. 7- The tractor s drawbar cannot exceed a MAXIMUM height of 20 inches from the ground level and it must be horizontal to the ground. The drawbar must extend at least 18 inches behind the center of the rear axle and have a sturdy 2 ½ hitching loop or clevis attached. The hook must be able to move freely in the hitch hole or clevis. (Note: The height of the clevis type hitches will be measured from the point at which the clevis attaches to the tractor.) Nothing may touch the sled hookup chain and all drawbar hitches must be rigid. 8- Suitcase weights are permitted if securely attached, original wheel weights and fluid in the tires may also be used during competition. Weights must not extend beyond the rear tires. Weights cannot extend more than 11 feet from the center of the rear axle to the furthest point forward. 9- No weight allowance will be given for wheelie bars in any class. The wheelie bars must be able to support the weight of the tractor and driver in the heaviest weight class pulled and conform to the USAP rules (see or the pulling committee for an illustration). 10- All tractors are subject to safety and rule compliance inspections by members of the pulling committee. Their decisions are final. 11- The driver that weighs in on a tractor MUST drive that tractor in the pull. 12- If the weight of the driver and tractor exceeds the weight class, they must register in the next heavier weight class. 13- After the tractor has been weighed and the drawbar length and height checked, no alterations of any kind are to be made to the tractor prior to the pull. 14- Tractors may be checked, weighed, and/or drawbars measured immediately after a pull, by the pulling committee. Anything found out of compliance with the rules at that time, will disqualify that pull. 15- Two tractors must be ready to pull at all times, with one on the track ready to hook to the sled. A pulling order will be announced so all drivers will have sufficient notice to be ready. 16- All pulls must start with a tight chain. No jerking. 17- When hitching and unhitching to the sled, the driver s tractor must be in neutral and his/her hands off the tractor s controls. 18- Drivers are allowed to shift gears or use a range splitter during a pull. Within the first 50 feet, the driver may opt for a repull to change gears unless they have already been flagged. 19- Drivers must remain seated for the entire pull; absolutely no standing up on the tractor during a pull. 20- The first puller of each class is the test puller. The test puller has a choice of a re-pull immediately following his/her first pull if they have not been disqualified but must accept the second distance. A re-pull may be necessary to adjust or reset the sled and is at the discretion of the pulling committee. Re-pulls will be done at the end of the class. 21- The flag person(s) is in charge of the track. At the start of the pull, a green flag will be displayed when the sled operator is ready and the driver may then proceed down the track. A red flag will be displayed when the driver must stop immediately. The pull is over when the forward motion stops as determined by the track judge. No one under 16 years of age may act as a flag person. 22 The tractor will be disqualified if the speed limit is broken after the front of the tractor crosses the 100 foot mark on the track. The horn on the sled will warn the driver when he/she is above the speed limit. 23- Drivers must keep the tractor and sled within the marked boundaries. If any part of the tractor or sled touches the marked line the pull will be disqualified. 24- If anything falls off the tractor while hooked to the sled, the pull will be disqualified. 25- The contest is open to any type of tractor powered by steam, gasoline, LPG (propane), fuel oil, or diesel. 26- No dual tires or excessively oversized tires. 27- Persons caught cheating will be disqualified from the pull that day. 28- Tractors with steel wheels or tracks must pull at the end of their class. 29- Points are awarded according to placement at the May, June, and September pulls. An award will be presented to the point leader of each class after the completion of the fall pull.

2 30- Pulling fees for 2011 are $10 per hook for each day for pullers who present a 2011 PSAT&MA membership card at time of registration. Non-members must pay $15 per hook for each day. During the PSAT&MA show, the fee is $20 per tractor and driver for the entire show (1-4 pulls), for members and non-members. When the driver registers and pays his/her fees for the pull, they are certifying they have read, understand and agree with the rules. No alcohol, methanol, or oxygen carriers (i.e. nitrous oxide). No ether or starting fluid cans are allowed on the tractor while pulling. There must be a hard fuel line made from steel, cooper or aluminum with a maximum of 6 of rubber. 4 All tractors must have a deadman throttle, working in a forward rearward direction with rearward being closed. All throttles must have 3 return springs; one on the lever and two on the carburetor linkage arm. No foot throttles are allowed. 5 A 3/16 steel block-saver plate is required between engine and transmission/clutch housing on tractors using an automotive type engine. 6 - *If using a stock harmonic balancer; there must be a 1/8 steel shroud that is attached to the engine block or a SFI approved balancer.* 7 Standard, automatic, or torque amplifier transmissions are allowed. *If standard, a SFI approved steel bell housing is required or a SFI approved transmission scatter blanket must be installed around the bell housing. The factory cast bell housing is not steel bell housing. If automatic, a SFI approved scatter blanket is required to be installed around the transmission.* Automatic transmissions are required to have a positive reverse lockout so the transmission can not be accidentally shifted into reverse. If the torque amplifier is factory in the tractor transmission, no other safety items need to be installed. 8 *A safety shield of a minimum 1/8 steel or 1/4 aluminum is required to be installed along both sides of the engine, but must not be attached to the engine. The shield must extend the length of the engine block; 2 below the crankshaft throw and to the top of the piston travel. Motor mounts, starter, and accessories do not count as a shield.* 9 *A fan shroud of at least 1/16 steel with a 1/2 clearance must surround the cooling fan and the shroud may be attached to the engine. An electric cooling fan does not require a shroud.* 10 A break away or kill switch mounted to the chassis and not the hitch or seat is required. It must be within 6 of the centerline of the tractor and no more than 18 above hitch height at the rear of the tractor. 11 Must start with a production farm tractor and it must maintain its original appearance. The tractor s transmission and production front end, either wide or narrow, must be retained. The tractor must have an original looking hood and nose assembly. The wheelbase must conform to the factory specifications. 12 Fenders are required and must extend above the tires height. Custom made fenders are allowed if they are factory appearing. 13 Tires are limited to 20.8x38 or smaller. No duals or four-wheel drive tractors allowed. Full cut tires allowed are at the discretion of the pulling committee. 14 See general tractor pulling rules for drawbar length and height. Differential housing may be altered for hitch fabrication. No drawbar supports above the center of the rear axle. Drawbar must be secure in all directions, with a hitch opening in the drawbar that must be 2 ½. No clevises are allowed. 15 There must be 500 lbs of movable weight and the weight may be redistributed at the discretion of the pulling committee. 16 Safety is of utmost concern and all Transplant tractors must have rear wheelie bars. The bars must extend at least to the back to the rear tires and be made of 2 1/2 square tubing, 1/4" thick. The skid plate must be at least 6 x 6 and made of at least 3/16 steel. The bars must be able to support the weight of the tractor and will be checked by the pulling committee. A design may be requested from the pulling committee. The driver is responsible to have the wheelie bars in the correct position prior to hooking to the sled. 17 The tractor seat must have a back the reaches at least to the small of the driver s back. The seat must be fixed or in a locked position. 18 Speed is limited to 12 mph when pulling. No speedometers. 19 All tractors must have a working fire extinguisher with a minimum of at least 3 pound BC rated type. 20 An inspection by the pulling committee is required for all transplants prior to pulling. *These rules are required for all tractors with more than 3500 rpm and recommended for those less than 3500 rpm.*
