1 TRACTOR RULES for 2018 Pulling season GENERAL TRACTOR RULES I. OUT-OF-FIELD TRACTOR AND ANTIQUE TRACTOR A. The tractor drawbar must be a fixed height of no more than 20" above the level of the ground, measured from the top surface of the drawbar. The bottom drawbar of those tractors using a double drawbar and pin cannot be higher than 19" above the level of the ground, measured from the top surface of the lower drawbar. No additional supports to drawbar that hinder clevis hookup are allowed. Length of the drawbar shall be at least 18" from center of axle to pulling point in a fixed position. Contestants must supply their own pulling ring. (Must be 3" ring hole and 4" length). B. No tire chains or lugs of any kind permitted. C. Factory stock Governor must be intact and in working condition. D. All weights must be securely fastened to tractor chassis. No loaders allowed. No weights shall extend more than 30" in front of the basic tractor. E. Weights hanging in back must not interfere with sled-discretion of judges. There must be space between weights for crew to safely hook up sled chain. F. No LP over diesel (or LP over gasoline) in out-of-field tractor or antique classes. G. Sponsoring organizations have the right to limit entries. H. Out-of-field tractors must have stock original equipment manufacturer (OEM) carburetor or replacement equivalent for the tractor. I. Out-of-field tractors must have original equipment engine blocks or replacement for that model, except for over 12,000 pound classes.

2 II. 9500# HOT STOCK, 6200# LIMITED MODIFIED, 6500# MODIFIED, 7300# SUPER STOCK, 7500# OPEN MODIFIED TRACTORS & SUPER FARM TRACTORS A. BRAKES 1. All pulling vehicles must be equipped with working rear brakes. B. DRAWBARS 1. Minimum drawbar length 18" from center of rear wheel to point of hook, measured horizontally. Maximum height of 20" from top of hitching device parallel to ground. Must be rigid in all directions and parallel to the ground. Must be equipped with a steel hitching device not more than 1" thickness, and with a 3" diameter X 4"long opening. Cross-sectional thickness must be 7/8" minimum. Pulling point may not be more than 1-1/2" from back edge of hitching device. 2. No portion of tractor may interfere with sled or sled hitch during a pull. 3. No trick hitches, no cam type rear ends. Drawbar distance from center of rear axle cannot change during pull. C. DRIVELINES 1. Clutches and flywheels a. The use of torque converters, automatic shifts, etc. will be permitted. b. All pulling vehicles using an automatic transmission must be equipped with a reverse gear lockout. c. All automotive type engines using clutches must be equipped with current SFI approved clutch housing, flywheel, pressure plate and disc. d. No lightening holes on the transmission face of the bell housing, one cooling hole allowed, maximum 1" diameter on face of bell housing. 2. Automotive type clutches, flywheels and bell housings a. No chemical milling b. The inspection/maintenance hole (i/m hole) in the bell housing shall not extend farther forward at its top edge than flush with the cross-shaft hole and no further downward at its bottom edge than to allow 1-1/2" bolt diameter edge distance for the fastening holes in both the bell housing and the i/m hole cover. The length of the i/m hole shall be no more than 8 1/2 inches (measured in a straight line) and the ends of the holes shall be smoothly and fully radiused to produce an oval shape. RRVPA RECOMMENDS NO OPENING.

3 c. There shall be twelve 5/16" Grade 5 or better cap screws securing the cover to the bell housing. The cover must have a plate or fillet that fits flush inside of the housing. d. There must be five bolts used to secure the transmission to the bell housing, 3/8" minimum diameter. e. Bell housings with lightening holes on the transmission face MAY NOT BE WELD FILLED AND REUSED. f. Clutch maintenance holes MAY NOT be weld filled if the original hole in the housing was over 10-1/2" in length or 3-1/2" wide. Bell housings MUST be flush on the inside surface. g. All automotive type engines with bell housings and clutch will run a full block plate, either a commercially available unit, or 3/16" steel or 1/4" aluminum with five 3/8" Grade 5 bolts evenly spaced on the bottom of the bell housing. 3. Aircraft, Marine, & Industrial a. When a gear box is used between the engine crankshaft and the clutch, the gear box output shaft must not exceed one and one-half times (1.5:1) the speed of the crank shaft. No torque converters allowed behind the gear box. The shaft that accepts the flywheel must be made of solid billet steel and 2-1/4" minimum diameter, to be heat treated 4140 steel, Rockwell. All clutch assemblies used in the application must meet current SFI standards. Bell housing to be bolted to a 1/4" steel plate or greater with a minimum of twelve 3/8" Grade 5 bolts evenly spaced around the bell housing. The 1/4" plate to which 3/8" bolts, Grade 5, four on each side of the frame. The gear box must be securely fastened to the frame by 3/8" steel plate, or securely attached to the rear of the engine. Gear box will be mounted and secured to the tractor sub-frame in such a manner to withstand lifting the entire tractor weighted for the lightest class it can legally enter. The gear box must be constructed of 3/8" steel or 3/4" aluminum or greater. Drivers of tractors using this type of arrangement MUST provide judges with POSTITIVE PROOF of gear box speed. b. A clutch mounted to the crankshaft or on a shaft connected to the crankshaft, the shaft or adapter which accepts the flywheel must be made of solid billet steel, and of 2 1/4" minimum diameter, to be heat treated 4140 steel, 30 to 38 Rockwell. ALL CLUTCH ASSEMBLIES USED IN THIS APPLICATION MUST MEET CURRENT STANDARDS Diameter limited to eleven inches. Bell housings to be as in NTPA Rule book. The clutch or torque converter MUST be mounted on crankshaft. All clutch components shall be required to have all steel, aluminum or ductile iron components, and must meet current Standards for this application. POSTTIVELY NO GRAY CAST IRON. Maximum

4 diameter 14". Tractor shall be required to have entire clutch or torque converter area enclosed, front and rear. 360 degrees coverage. 3/8" minimum thickness steel. 1/2" distance from rotating mass, maximum centering on rotating mass. POSITIVELY NO GRAY CAST IRON! Entire shield to be covered with scatter blanket, meeting current standards 360 degrees. Blanket to center on rotating mass, minimum 12" wide, and cover the clutch and all components. 4. Turbines a. Any turbine engine that exceeds 8000 rpm on the output shaft shall not be allowed to use a clutch/flywheel assembly, or an automatic transmission. 5. Automotive Engines a. Clutch must be mounted to engine. D. DRIVE LINE SHIELDING 1. All remaining drive train, excluding any additional manual transmissions, must be enclosed in 5/16" minimum steel, round, inside diameter not to exceed 2" more than the outside diameter of the largest universal joint, fastened every 6" or closer, with 3/8" or larger bolts, Grade 5, or butt and seam welded, and securely mounted to tractor frame. Applies to all, tractors with exposed drive shafts. 2. All automatic transmissions with torque converters must be completely covered, 360 degrees, with a safety scatter blanket meeting current Standards from the back of the engine block to where the tail shaft bolts to the main housing of the transmission and fastened securely in place. The opening at the bottom of the transmission/torque converter housing must be enclosed in steel (stock steel cover is acceptable). Remainder of the drive train is to be covered as in 6a. 3. All modified and tractor engine/automatic transmission combinations must have 2 front motor mounts, 2 rear motor mounts and a support saddle for rear of transmission, with 1/2" maximum clearance or two front motor mounts, support saddle at rear of engine with 1/2" clearance and a mount at rear of transmission. (This is to prevent engine or transmission from dropping if breakage occurs). 4. All driveline brakes must have 3/8" steel, 360 degrees around brake components, and both ends must be closed with 1/8" steel or greater. 5. On multiple engine tractors with inline engines if starter ring is used between motors, the starter ring must be covered 360 degrees, and both ends closed with 1/4" steel or greater, to be securely fastened. An engine block plate may be used for back (behind starter ring) portion of the shield only.

5 E. CHASSIS 1. Modified tractors with frame bolted to transmission shall also be: Bolted to axle housing to prevent splitting tractor and must be of sufficient strength to support the weight of the tractor in the heaviest class being entered with bolts removed. 2. All tractors shall have wide front axles. Front wheels shall track within the rear wheels. However, narrow fronts, with limited turning radius stops, will be allowed at the judge s discretion of safety. 3. Front axle skid plates/skis REQUIRED. F. ENGINES 1. A deflection shield is required on both sides of all engines. Shield must extend the complete length of block casting and be securely fastened. To be made of aluminum or steel a minimum of.060 thick or safety blanket material. 2. Shielding on all Super Stock and Hot Stock in line engines will be from sheet metal (hood) to two (2) inches below bottom center of crankshaft throw, and be securely fastened. 3. Starter motors and fuel injection pumps may not be used as shielding. Shielding may cover or pass behind starter or fuel pump. 4. Sixty thousandth inch (0.060") sheet metal is acceptable for side shrouding (super-stock and hots only), only as long as safety level is maintained. 5. Shielding on all V or Y type engines (including marine or aircraft types) must extend from base of head or the uppermost point of piston travel to two (2) inches below bottom center of crankshaft throw, and be securely fastened. 6. Shielding on modified tractors using in-line engines shall be from the bottom of head (top of block) and extend to two (2) inches below bottom center throw of crankshaft. 7. All pulling vehicles must be equipped with a deadman throttle. All throttles working in a forward-rear-forward direction shall be closed in the rearmost position. No hydraulic throttle linkage allowed. It must be a positive, 2-way mechanical linkage. All foot throttles must have toe strap. 8. All injection or butterfly shafts on blown engines must have dual return-to-idle arms and springs. 9. The following rules will apply to tractors powered by turbine engines: a. No turbine engine will be operated beyond military temperature and RPM limits. b. All turbine air intakes shall be screened with metal screen having openings no larger than 1/8". c. All turbine engines must have a 360 degree cover extending from the location of the turbine wheel for a minimum distance of 10" in. The direction of gas flow shield must be made of 3/8" steel or 1/4" stainless with all joints securely fastened.

6 10. Exhaust stack diameter to be no smaller than 1" of engine outlet. A bolt in the crankshaft to hold damper pulley is required. 11. HARMONIC BALANCERS All automotive engines equipped with a harmonic balancer shall have SFI ID, or shrouded with 1/4" steel no more than one (1) inch away in direction of rotation, 360 degrees, also the front of the balancer is to be securely fastened. Steel to be of following minimum properties: Tensile strength--60,000 ps: Yield strength-- 40,000 psi. 12. All engine fans must be shrouded with steel 1/16" or thicker 360 degrees. Electric fans excluded. 13. ENGINES used in both automobiles and trucks by manufacturers are classed automotive. G. EXHAUST SYSTEMS 1. All exhaust must discharge vertically. Vertical is defined as being within 10 degrees, in any direction of being in plumb. 2. Height to be a minimum of one foot above the bend in the pipe which discharges vertically measured from top of the pipe to bottom of bend. 3. All exhaust pipes must be securely attached. 4. Rain Caps may not be used. 5. No megaphone pipes allowed. 6. Venturi type headers acceptable. H. FUEL AND FUEL CONTAINERS 1. All forms of nitro are illegal as a fuel additive for pulling. A sum of $100 must be paid to check any competitor for illegal use of nitro. If proved illegal the fee will be returned to the protesting puller. Penalty for illegal use is loss of points and suspension of membership for one year and 10 days. If proved not illegal, the tractor owner will collect fee. 2. Legal fuels are alcohol, water, diesel-fuel, aviation gas, gasoline, propane gas, and turbine fuel. 3. Nitrous oxide and all other oxygen carriers and accelerators legal only when specifically allowed by the rules. 4. No pressurized fuels allowed except in certified vessel. No oxygen allowed. I. KILL SWITCHES (SAFETY INTERLOCKS) 1. All pulling vehicles must have an automatic ignition kill switch and/or air shutoff. a. The kill switch must be in the rear center of the tractor above the point of hook. b. On a spark ignition engine, the kill switch must break or ground the ignition circuit.

7 c. On a diesel, the switch must activate the air shutoff required of all diesel engines. A cable may be used for this purpose. d. On ALL vehicles with electric fuel pump(s), kill switch must break current to the fuel pump(s). e. The break-a-way switches will have attached to them a minimum of a 2" diameter ring. To this ring will attach the rope from the sled. f. If vehicle has kill switch or shut off located in legal position and during the pull it is pulled for an unknown reason, and the presiding judge inspects and finds switch capable of operating properly under normal conditions, vehicle will be allowed to re-pull. 2. All spark ignition engines must have a kill switch in working order within easy reach of driver while seated and harnessed. 3. All diesel and fuel injected engines must have a fuel shutoff valve control within easy reach of driver. 4. All diesel engines will be equipped with an emergency shutdown air shutoff at the air intake, which can be activated from the tractor seat. 5. All pulling vehicles will be equipped with a starter interrupter switch on the gearshift which will allow starter engagement only in a neutral gearshift position. 6. All pulling vehicles will be equipped with two (2) reverse gear indicator lights. a. Light must be clear or white. b. One light must be at the rear of the unit centered above the hook point and clearly visible to the hook crew. c. One light must be clearly visible to the driver. d. Driver's will shift out of reverse and raise hands from controls while crew hooks sled to pulling unit. 7. Main battery disconnects required in all tractor classes. J. SAFETY (FIRE) 1. All pulling vehicles must be equipped with a minimum of 2-1/2 lb. dry chemical or halon fire extinguisher in workable condition and convenient to operator. NOTE: Halon system NOT allowed for diesel fueled engines! 2. A fire extinguisher must be available on the track and furnished by the track officials. K. SAFETY (DRIVER) 1. All modified class Tractor & Truck drivers must wear helmet & one (1) or two (2) piece suit with SFI rating. 2. Face sock, gloves, & shoes are optional. 3. RRVPA recommends each driver to wear a neck brace. 4. All drivers that have an open engine must have an operable visor on their helmet.

8 L. SEATS AND FENDERS 1. All tractors must have a strong and rigid seat. All tip seats must be securely fastened while pulling. All seats will have side rails that are a minimum of 4" above the edge of the seat extend a minimum of one-half the distance from the back of the seat to the front edge; minimum strength equivalent to 1/2" pipe. If fenders are 6" or greater above the seat, and are 6" or less from the seat, no seat side rails are required. Seats will be thoroughly inspected by officials. 2. All Modified tractors must have a shield between driver and tire, (not necessarily a fender), to consist of a solid barrier between driver and any part of the rear tires sufficient to withstand a sideways force of 300 lbs. The barrier must be a minimum of 6" wide at the bottom, increasing to a minimum of 36" wide at the top. The barrier must curl a minimum of 6" from vertical out over the tire in the same configuration as the tire. 3. All modified tractors will be required to have fenders or a shield or both between driver and any part of the rear tire. Fenders or shields must be able to support weight of driver. Shields in 1, 2 and 3 must be constructed so that when the driver is seated and the hands are on the wheel, he cannot touch the rear tire with any part of the driver's body. N. ROLL BARS (CAGE) 1. Roll Bars are required on ALL Modified tractors following similar standards as NTPA rule Book. 2. Cages are to be constructed of tubular steel with a minimum 1.75 inch diameter and a minimum inch wall thickness. Tubing 2.0 inch and up per NTPA. O. STABILIZER (WHEELIE) BARS 1. Stabilizer bars are required. The drawbar and drawbar assembly will not in any way be attached to the stabilizer bar assembly. 2. On modified tractors where the hitch and wheelie bars are connected to the same frame, the wheelie bars must be fastened at least 4" ahead of the hitch. 3. The stabilizer bar will extend a minimum of 32" behind a line drawn from the center of the wheel to the ground. 4. The stabilizer pad must not be more than 10" off the ground. 5. The stabilizer pad must be a minimum of 5" square. 6. A minimum of 20" will be allowed from the outside of one pad to the outside of the other pad. 7. Stabilizer bars are not to be mounted in any manner to drawbar. 8. The stabilizer bar system must be able to support the weight of the tractor. Jacking up the pads, so tractor is completely off the ground will be a good test.

9 P. SUPERCHARGERS-TURBOCHARGERS 1. All turbochargers NOT under hood must be completely shrouded, except for inlet and exhaust pipes, with steel 1/16" or thicker. 2. All final turbocharger exhaust(s) must be cross bolted with two (2) 3/8" diam. grade 5 bolts 90 degrees to each other. 3. All supercharger drive components must be shrouded on the top and sides with 1/16" steel. Shield to be wider than the drive belt or chain and securely mounted. All centrifugal superchargers must be shielded with 3/8" steel on the top and sides, 6" fastened securely with Grade 5 or better 3/8" bolts every 2" where fastened. 4. In-line engines are required to have one cable that must surround the engine block and head routed between the #1 & #2 exhaust ports. Cable must be a minimum of 3/8" thickness, 2 clamps, and 4 inches of slack. 5. SFI blower restraints required on all supercharged engines. Q. TIRES 1. Contests open to pulling vehicles with rubber strip tires. 2. No four wheel drive. 3. No dual tires, tire studs, or chains permitted. 4. All power must be transmitted through the wheels. 5. A limit of 30.5" is put on the width of tires. III. DEFINITIONS OF TRACTOR CLASSES A. 7500# OPEN MODIFIED 1. The tractor specifications and safety equipment requirements per ARTICLE II will apply # Open Modified tractors are those using any combination of engine(s), transmission (s), and final drive. 3. Weight class is 7,500 pounds. 4. No portion of a modified tractor may exceed 14' forward of the center of the rear wheel. 5. Roll cage required per ARTICLE II, Section M. B. 7300# SUPER STOCK TRACTORS 1. The tractor specifications and safety equipment requirements per ARTICLE II will apply. 2. A super stock chassis shall consist of the following: a. The stock engine block or its replacement as listed by the manufacturer. b. The stock bell housing or manufacturer's replacement. c. The stock transmission housing or manufacturer's replacement.

10 d. A mixture of bell housing, transmission and rear end will be allowed if all are from the same manufacturer. e. A scatter blanket that meets current Standards, around flywheel and clutch components is required. Blanket shall cover 360 degrees around the flywheel and all clutch components, from the rear of the engine block back, blanket to be a minimum of 12" wide. Blanket is to be located as close as possible to the flywheel. All clutch components made of steel, aluminum or ductile iron. POSITIVELY NO GRAY CAST IRON ALLOWED. f. Original farm tractors must have safety tie bars mounted from the rear end axle housing to the main frame OR Replace original frame with a one piece frame extending from the front of the tractor to the rear axle housing mounting bolts. Note: Any alterations to the chassis must have the written approval of the executive board before the tractor in question will be considered a legal entry. (The criteria used by the board will be the retention of stock appearance.) The tractor chassis and frame must remain stock from the rear of the engine block to the rear of the tractor on all super stock tractors. 3. Engine a. Alcohol, diesel or propane (LPG) allowed b. Twin turbos allowed to 505 C.I. c. Single turbo allowed to 680 C.I. d. Only engines considered legal to be used in Super-Stock division must be available in 2 wheel drive farm tractors. e. Limited to 2 valves per cylinder. f. Turbocharged engines are required to have one cable that must surround the engine block and head routed between the #1 & #2 exhaust ports. Cable must be a minimum of 3/8" thickness, 2 clamps, and 4 inches of slack. 4. Weight class is 7300 lbs. 5. Maximum tire size is 30.5 x 32 a. Any tire type allowed (cut, double cut, Puller 2000, etc) 6. Must have welded hubs. 7. Super-Stock tractors must have hood and grill in place as intended by the manufacturer, any alterations to the stock appearance must have written executive board approval before tractor in question will be considered a legal entry. 8. Sheet metal to be stock length and in stock location. 9. Roll cage required per ARTICLE II, Section M.

11 10. Maximum of 144 inch wheelbase unless originally produced with longer wheelbase, in which case stock case must remain. Maximum length of 13 feet from center of rear wheel to forward most extent of chassis. 11. No tractor available for purchase as a 4-wheel drive only is eligible as a Super- Stock entry. 12. If committee doubts legality of an entry, or upon protest of another contestant in that class, contestant must verify that 150 units of the tractor in question have been manufactured (notarized statement from the manufacturer), furnish part numbers, and prove to the committee's satisfaction that they have legal entry. C. 6500# MODIFIED TRACTORS 1. The tractor specifications and safety equipment requirements per ARTICLE II will apply. 2. Allowable Engine(s) and modifications: a. Single Engine natural aspirated i. 600 CID limit ii. Must be cast iron block similar to OEM production. After-market allowed. iii. May be carbureted or injected. iv. May include one and only one of the following: 1. After-market heads 2. Single stage nitrous oxide b. Single Engine super charged i. 500 CID limit ii. Must be cast iron block similar to OEM production. After-market allowed. iii. Maximum of 8-71 roots style supercharger 1. Stock rotors only 2. No high helix or billet rotors 3. May be striped 4. No retrofit 5. Maximum 25% overdrive c. 2 Small Block Engines i. 360 CID limit (each) ii. Must be OEM production cast iron block. After-market NOT allowed iii. OEM heads may be cast iron or aluminum iv. Natural aspiration with single carburetor v. Single stage nitrous oxide allowed d. 3 Small Block Engines i. 360 CID limit (each)

12 ii. Must be OEM production cast iron block. After-market NOT allowed iii. OEM heads may be cast iron or aluminum iv. Natural aspiration with single carburetor v. Single Stage nitrous oxide allowed e. 2 Big Block Engines i. 530 CID limit (each) ii. Must be OEM production cast iron block. After-market NOT allowed iii. OEM heads may be cast iron or aluminum iv. Natural aspiration with single carburetor v. No nitrous oxide allowed f. NO Agricultural Engines g. Single Engine Turbine Allowed i. Maximum Size T Weight class is 6500 lbs. 4. Tire size limited to a maximum of 30.5 x 32 Agricultural tires. a. Any tire type allowed (cut, double cut, etc) b. Firestone Puller 2000 HP tires allowed 5. Roll cage required per ARTICLE II, Section M. 6. Any rear end style allowed. D. 6200# LIMITED MODIFIED TRACTORS 1. The tractor specifications and safety equipment requirements per ARTICLE II will apply. 2. Must be a single automotive OEM engine no more than 525 CID. a. OEM production cast iron block. After-market NOT allowed. b. OEM production heads may be cast iron or aluminum. 3. Any type of carburetor or injection and manifold set up is allowed. 4. No superchargers (blowers), or turbochargers (turbos) allowed. Only natural aspirated engines. 5. Race gas or Methanol allowed as fuel. No diesel fueled engines. 6. Single stage nitrous injection allowed. 7. Weight class is 6200 lbs. 8. Tire size limited to a maximum of 30.5 x 32 Agricultural tires. a. Tire type allowed lug, cut, and double cut b. No Firestone Puller 2000 HP 9. Roll cage required per ARTICLE II, Section M. 10. Any rear end style allowed.

13 E. 9500# HOT STOCK TRACTORS 1. The tractor specifications and safety equipment requirements per ARTICLE II will apply. i. Fire suit, face sock, gloves, and shoes per ARTICLE II, Section K, not mandatory, but highly recommended. Helmet is mandatory. 2. Engine a. Must be a OEM block no more than 585 CID limit i. Oliver 2255 with Cat 3208 allowed b. Engine must bolt to clutch housing directly or with OEM adapter plate if above 466 CID. c. Stock or manufacturer's replacement head. d. Any injection pump. e. Maximum 2.6" turbo inlet size. f rpm limit. g. Dead man throttle not required 3. A starter interlock is required per ARTICLE II, Section I, Paragraph 5. a. Clutch interlock only is allowed. 4. A scatter blanket or steel shield is required around flywheel and clutch housing. 5. Front Axle a. Skid plates/skis NOT REQUIRED if using factory front axle for that size and make of tractor. b. Factory narrow front axle for that size and make of tractor must have turn limiter. i. No more than 45 turn angle. c. The current participants with narrow front ends are grandfathered in as allowed. ALL future units must have a wide front end. 6. Diesel fuel only. i. No nitrous or propane (LPG) injection. ii. Water injection allowed. 7. Engine and rear end must of the same brand, or an OEM combination (Massey Ferguson & Perkins, Oliver & Cat/Waukesha, etc). 8. Weight class is 9,500 lbs. 9. Tire size limited to a maximum of 20.8xR38 (or equivalent square inch footprint) tires. i. Single cut tires only 10. Roll cage required per ARTICLE II, section M. i. Factory Roll-over Protective Structure (ROPS) is allowed in place of roll cage. 11. ALL units must have a 5 point harness and high back rigid seat.

14 F. SUPER FARM TRACTORS 1. The Super Farm tractors will run under the same rules as NTPA Region 3. (Diesel Only)

Single Engine Modified Tractors
