5 FROM THE PRESIDENT Wasn t Australia Day a great display of Jaguars, with plenty of the public admiring and asking questions of the different car s owners. We are certainly privileged to have such a magnificent venue on the Foreshore of Newcastle Harbour could there be anywhere better? Pauline, with some help from Jan & Dale, put out the Regalia, and made good sales, even selling some 2006 National Rally hats to Japanese tourists! Well done. Our mid week run for January was to the Catherine Hill Bay Bowling Club, where we viewed Alistair s newly acquired Mk 8, an absolutely stunning vehicle that has been lovingly restored. After some help from Peter on the brakes, it is now ready to grace us on more outings. Buying cars interstate on the basis of written descriptions and photos can be both rewarding (as it was for Alistair) or an absolute heartbreaking venture. Peter & I flew to Brisbane for Peter s purchase of a 420G - described as a beauty to behold - with photos to match. Standing at the airport watching it drive towards us took our breath away, such magnificence. Pity it couldn t be left at that, but on reaching the car park and starting our inspection, reality set in with the resultant disappointment. Luckily we were able to get a reasonably cheap flight back to Newcastle. A salutary lesson on being aware of believing what is written about cars for sale. The ACJC meeting is this month, where we will be discussing various issues relating to all the Jaguar Car Clubs, and the National Rally. Voting has been completed by all the Clubs for the Paul Skilleter Award for best Club magazine article, and the Andrew Whyte Award for best article in the Jag Mag. These will be compiled and the winners announced at the National Rally in Canberra at Easter. This year our Mid West to Sea Circuit Tour to the National Rally sees the biggest contingent of club cars yet, with 11 cars and 19 members starting out the Sunday before, to travel to Canberra by West Wyalong, then home via Cann River - so much to see with lots of camaraderie. This month we start with our Tea by the Sea dinner overlooking Bar Beach, then later in the month Wings over the Illawarra weekend, where I m looking forward to seeing Connie take to the skies. Our mid week run on Thursday 10th is for fish & chips overlooking the beach at Terrigal, another delightful spot. Thank you visitors and members that came to our January monthly meeting, a record attendance, with plenty of helpful technical discussion. We look forward to seeing everyone at future Club outings, and our Club meeting, safe and enjoyable driving The Hub February

Tomorrows Australia Day Display she needs members to meet at Civic Railway Station Hunter Street at 8am. She received s from NCC on Friday asking for details of cars attending and that they needed forms to be filled in (for insurance purposes) and at that late date it has been difficult weekend trying to contact members. Ian informed on the Technical Day being held on Saturday 26 th March and on the same day the ladies will attend the Antique stores in Newcastle. Mary moved that her report be accepted Seconded Nicole Haigh Regalia Officer: Pauline said that she had done some updating on some of the regalia and some of them may need a slight price rise and that she has purchased some chiffon scarves and picnic sets Club Plates Registrar: Peter will be sending out letters to the members who have club plated vehicles who haven t attended three outings in a club plated car in one club calendar year with an explanation of the rules. Peter will organise with committee to see what exceptions will be accepted. Librarian: John has bought along some books for members to borrow. He suggests if members are interested in borrowing a specific book if they can him, he will bring the books to the meeting. Editor: The magazine with the new format does cost more but we will save some money as committee has decided not to send hard copies to the car clubs they will get an e copy only for them to to their members. As usual he is putting out a plea for members to contact him if they would be interested in going in the grilled section of The Hub. The Hub February

8 SECRETARY S REPORT (cont d) Webmaster: Andrew said he has updated the web page today. Ian said that Lumley s had offered to pay a cost to have us put an ad on our website but committee had decided not to accept advertising on our web page but we would like Andrew to do a draft plan about what constitutes the website. General Business: Peter asked Steve as custodian of club tools could he have a list of tools published so members could know what tools the club owns. Phil said he would put another list in February Hub. Peter also suggested that we could buy more tools that would be handy for members Steve said that there are not many members borrowing tools and maybe we need to more regularly remind members what tools we do own. Bill Whitby suggests we purchase a first aid kit to take on our trips and he has made a club calendar for members to purchase at $15 each. We thanked Bill for his contribution. Ian asked if anyone had any suggestions for a Technical Day. Problem Corner: John Moremon said his 2003 XJ8 is going in for surgery this week on the gearbox with a local automatic gearbox specialist. Apparently in order to change the gearbox filter a whole new plastic sump also needs to be fitted. Suggestions were made that this kind of work required automatic gearbox specialist Special electronic equipment is required for servicing of the ZF transmission. Dennis Lindsay said that his XJ Series II was getting through a bit of oil and some oil is getting into the water system and asked if there was anything peculiar to the XK engine, which he needs to know about. Peter said there are a couple of things, which could cause this. The timing cover is thin and could corrode through also a blown head gasket may also be a cause although Dennis confirmed that there was no water in the oil and the car hasn t been used for 10 years. Suggestions were also made for the need to change glycol based anti-freeze. This needs to be changed at least every two years, if you leave it longer this tends to turn acidic and may cause corrosion. Ian suggested that you could use Millers brand coolant as this has no glycol and is approved for racing. If you don t know what type of coolant is in the car already you would need to flush thoroughly because different types will react, sometimes turning to jelly. Peter said that it can rust floors in cars as they don t realise their heater matrix is leaking Peter checks his coolant with litmus paper and if it goes below 5 he flushes the system. The Raffle prize of a model E-type roadster was won by Alan Calcutt. The meeting closed at 9:00pm. The Club Committee, on behalf of all members, would like to extend a warm welcome to the following new members: Rodney Glassop of New Lambton (E Type Series 1) Robin & Jenny Redfern of Gloucester (XJS) We hope you enjoy your participation in the Club and we look forward to your company. 11 This month s member(s): Michael Laugesen and Diana Jones - a segment featuring Club members and their cars What Jaguar(s) do you currently own? 1974 XJ6 Series XJ6 Series XJ12 Series 2 What was your first Jaguar? 1975 Daimler Double 6 When did you get your first Jaguar? 1983 What is your daily drive? 2001 Ford Fairmont, Holden Vectra CD How did you first get interested in Jaguars? I always had British cars since I was 15 years old, including Morris 8, LIP Vauxhall, 1962 PA Vauxhall. In my late twenties, I progressed to the Daimler after a couple of HQ Holdens. My boss at the time had fuelled my interest with his brand new XJS (1983) and a 1966 E Type 2+2, but with two children, the sedan was more appropriate, with the V12 motor. Any unfulfilled Jaguar wishes? I would like to take a driving holiday in a Jag, to Perth via Melbourne and Adelaide. Unfortunately, Diana doesn t share my passion for cars, and prefers to drive only as far as the airport carpark. I would like to add a Mark 9 to the collection, or any model with lots of timber and picnic trays, for my grandson at the Maccas drivethrough! After driving John Floyd s manual XJS, I am also very keen on one of those too. What kind of driving do you do in your Jaguars? Weekend runs to visit kids and grandson at Woy Woy and Glenorie. Left: Michael s 1974 XJ6 Series 2 The Hub February

12 GRILLED Michael Laugesen & Diana Jones (cont d) How much of the work on your Jaguar(s) do you do yourself as opposed to outsourcing? I like to take things apart and have a mechanic mate to help get them back together What cars or interests appeal to you, other than Jaguars? Other cars include our 1989 Bentley Turbo R, which is very enjoyable, but I feel very limited about where I can take it. Other interests include V8 Jet sprint boat racing as pit crew for my brother s boat Spanet in the 400 Class. I also enjoy working with timber as a hobby. Above: Michael s Bentley Turbo R Best driving experience? Any time the opportunity has presented, to wind out the V12 RPM s to hear that racing car sound! Worst driving experience? Hitting black ice in New Zealand s southern alps and sliding sideways down a hill, across the full width of the road, for approximately 300 metres. We gained traction just in time to get across a one lane bridge without hitting anything. Above: Michael s XJ6 Series 3 Right: Michael s XJ12 Series 2 12 The Hub February 2011

13 There are a lot of words in the HUB. But there could be more, if members had their say. Here s your chance. In this segment, we provide the opportunity for members to write about any matter that s related to Jaguars, other cars, motoring, the Club, well...almost anything (at the Editor s discretion)! Here s the first contribution, from Garry Smith. Good Morning Ian, A few words re your comments in The HUB, if I may. Editor I agree that Mark 2 Jaguars should not be referred to as MkII. However, in the interest of continuing the debate, in a light manner of course!, could I suggest that perhaps they should always be referred to as Mark 2 rather than Mk 2. I note my Mark 2 has Mk 2 on the boot but I note that written references usually use the term in full, rather than abbreviated. Now, to continue in similar vein, should we only refer to the Mark 1 as the 2.4 or 3.4 because Mark 1 is a retrospective term used after the Mark 2 was introduced (bit like the FX Holden). And again, perhaps we should not refer to the 240 and 340 Jaguars as Mark 2. I seem to remember that Graeme Gardiner introduced his fine looking machine as a 340 some time ago but it is now referred to in The Hub as a Mark 2. I note that Jaguar info always refers to the 240 and 340 Jags only as 240 or 340. But to another story. There could be some interesting stories in regard to people's reactions to members' Jaguars. My Mark 2 is nothing flash as Mark 2s go - it has disc wheels, automatic transmission and an original interior that is getting a little tatty on close inspection. However, it was resprayed about ten years in its original colour. It is very eye catching in its Opalescent Maroon and cream leather upholstery and gets a lot of comments on the road, particularly from women (I love it - I should have got one when I was twenty something, rather than sixty something). I have had women give way to me and wave me across, I have had woman come up to me on the street and comment on my beautiful car. On two occasions I have had women put their head through the window and tell me how beautiful my car is (please, I refer to woman going about their normal business, not woman plying their trade!). Now to the second half of my story. Because of the unexpected actions of two vehicles and a speeding third vehicle, I had to stop on a pedestrian crossing along with one other vehicle, thus blocking the crossing's use. As the road cleared and I got off the crossing I was aware of a young woman with two children in hand about five metres away screaming abuse at me. I had noticed her appear on the scene from around the corner, so she would not have witnessed what had happened and our paths had not crossed earlier. The Hub February

14 Members Forum (cont d) I let the matter go and proceeded on my way. A week later I was parked in the same area and a bloke came up to me and said 'You copped a load of abuse last week'. 'Yes' I answered. He replied 'You did the right thing in getting off the crossing - the abuse only happened because of that flash looking car you were driving, if you had been in a beat-up old Datsun, she would not have said anything'. Do other Jaguar owners have similar stories? Regards, Garry PS I have had the Mark 2 for a little over two years and still haven't attended a club function etc. I will get there one day - I have had a series of mishaps such as a knee misplacement and shoulder restructuring, along with a series of break downs following a motor rebuild (the Jag's not mine), several of which were caused by a shipment of faulty thermostats. I have also come to the conclusion that you can't be semi-retired, it is a case of either one or the other. PPS I may get howled down on this but I prefer disc wheels to wire wheels on most of the old post-war Jags. That rarest of all beasts, the Jaguar XKSS looks fantastic with its slotted steel wheels. It is absolutely loaded with male testosterone and would look effeminate with wire wheels. Garry Smith Gloucester NSW Steve Lilly earning brownie points! Those who have attended Club events over the last few years will surely have heard some discussion about the balance between cars and houses when it comes to maintenance and improvements. It s a dilemma we all face, and it s one usually seen differently by men and women. Steve and Robynne Lilly have often had these discussions during Club runs, where their Black Hill verandah has loomed large as an item that s struggling for priority against Jaguar work. The HUB is pleased to publish this scoop photo, and release to the world the news that The Lilly verandah has now been worked on. Perhaps soon, Robynne s Maroon Daimler 250 V8 will be able to have the work on its interior, temporarily on hold in favour of the verandah, completed! 14 The Hub February 2011

21 Sealed for Life ZF 5HP 24 Gearboxes X Type, S Type, XK & XJ - Ian Hissey On our recent Wheels & Wings Tour to Wollongong, member John Moremon with his X350 suffered a number of instances where the gearbox went into limp home mode, causing undue embarrassment and quite a bit of angst. Having delivered the car to a Jaguar dealer for checking, and being told after considerable expense that they couldn t find anything, raises the discussion of the inherent problem in these sealed for life 5 speed gearboxes. The reality is that these gearboxes need to have their oil changed, at most before 80,000klms, and even as soon as 40,000klms depending on the type of use the vehicle gets. Many gearboxes that have reached 130,000klms and have had their oil changed, it comes out like treacle sludge on the way to expensive damage to the internals of the gearbox. On the 4WD X Type transfer case, the same applies, as these hold a very small amount of oil for their use. Numerous articles have been written on this subject, the most authoritive in the Jaguar Enthusiast Club (UK) magazine, where Bob Bates and others have published articles, and owners have published letters describing their harrowing experiences. 31 JANUARY MID WEEK RUN Not wanting 2011 to become too far advanced without any Club activities, President Ian Hissey organised and led a well attended outing to Catherine Hill Bay on 12 th January The weather was January hot and humid, with a strong nor-easter. We stopped off at Myuna Bay for morning tea, as we ve done before, and had a chance to review the nine cars that started out. They were: Peter Dwyer s XJS Paul Barnett s E Type Series 3 Steve and Robynne Lilly s E Type Series 3 Ian and Jan Hissey s XJ-SC Dennis and Alison Trigg s XJ40 Phil McLeod s XJ6 Series 2 Peter and Lorna Martin s XJ8 Nick Coulton s XJ6 Series 2 Garry Flack s XJ6 Series 3 Above: Arrived at Myuna Bay Bill Whitby s S Type with Bill s sister Valerie Donovan After nourishing ourselves and solving some of the Jaguar world s issues, we drove in handsome convoy to Catherine Hill Bay, where we took up residence at the Bowling Club. Not long after we arrived there, we were greeted by the magnificent sight of Alistair McIlroy arriving in his newly acquired Mark 8, followed by Graeme Gardiner (X Type). Making a rare visit were also Richard and Robin Lynch with grandson Zac who arrived in time for lunch. The staff did an excellent job of preparing our meals so that they all arrived together. 33 New cars often come into the Club as members change Jaguars or add to their collection. If you are one of the lucky ones who can get to Club runs easily, it s great to see these different vehicles when they appear. But if, due to distance or the tyrannies of a working life, you rarely get to events, you miss out. In this segment, we will feature new cars that have been brought into the Club, thereby keeping all members up-to-date with changes in the fleet. Here s the first. Editor Alistair McIlroy s Mark 8 When Alistair McIlroy was featured in the Grilled segment of the HUB in April 2010, he said, in relation to unfulfilled ambitions, I could see myself in a stately Mark 9 blue, green or maroon with black. It seems Alistair has done what few manage he has realised this dream. Well, almost he has acquired a Mark 8, which, after serious consideration and numerous suggestions, he has called Jasper. In fact there is very little difference between the Mark 8 and 9, so much so, that in his book The Jaguar Tradition first published in 1973, Michael Frostick shows a profile photo attributed to Jaguar archives, captioned Mark VIII or IX, their guess must be as good as any. Jasper is a beautiful example, in very dark Indigo blue, with cream leather and timber interior trim that can only be described as better than new. The photographs on these pages barely do the car justice. The Editor couldn t get under the car to photograph its pristine underside! This car looks better than it would have been when it left the factory in Left: A justifiably proud Alistair with Jasper Right: T h e stately shape of the Mark 8 l o o k s v e ry grand in its very dark Ind i g o b l u e coachwork The Hub February

34 Alistair McIlroy s Mark 8 (cont d) Alistair bought Jasper from an elderly owner in Queensland, after searching the internet as we all do from time to time. It had been full restored between 1998 and 2002 on the Gold Coast, has been meticulously maintained and hardly been used since. Certainly it hasn t seen rain, dust or dirt in that time. Service records show it has travelled 65 miles in the last 18 months. Since restoration, it has won concourse awards with the JDCQ, and doubtless Alistair will be proudly displaying Jasper on future occasions, under the JDCHR banner. We wish Alistair and Jasper a long and beautiful relationship. Above: A very appropriate (Qld) number plate Above right: I wish my dinner plate was that clean! Right: What a fascia panel! 35 Australia Day a great opportunity to show national pride and community spirit, and to be the only Car Club to display our cars at the Foreshore. They re British, but so was Australia, once! It was an early start, to fit in with the Council s military precision for arrival time. Mary Cox had been tested only two days out, by the Council organiser wanting full details of every car attending, but she managed. We made it in an impressive convoy of 23 cars 22 Jaguars and one Daimler. Plus an immaculate MG TF who s owner politely asked could he park with us as no other MG s were coming. How he got through the Council bureaucracy remains a mystery! The early start meant we had no trouble commandeering the shady part of the area in front of Customs House, which we were grateful for Customs House makes a fitting background for such classy machinery. as the day warmed up. An unusual sea mist made visibility (and photography) difficult for a while, but was no help in drowning out the noise of the Dodgem Cars who were positioned right behind us. It is truly a lovely setting for our cars, and one that ensures a steady stream of admirers throughout the day. Morning tea and lunch brought from home or purchased from the junk food caravan or the local cafes, ensured we didn't go home hungry. What a magnificent lineup! 23 member cars in place and ready to go by 8.30am, right near the Dodgem cars The Hub February

36 AUSTRALIA DAY (cont d) The display area very soon filled up with families, young people, old people and children, all proudly out and about for Australia. Flags and other Australiana were much in evidence, with everyone enjoying the occasion, the beautiful weather, and the community spirit. Pauline Hopkin set up her regalia sales table under the Club gazebo, and had a steady stream of interested passers by who made many purchases. When two cars departed leaving a shady spot on the concrete display area, the regalia table was hastily relocated to capture more of the passing trade. That left the gazebo vacant, and its shady realm proved too attractive to a succession of opportunistic revellers who took up residence. We may have to charge rent next year! NEWCASTLE CUSTOMS HOUSE Noisy dodgem cars make an ironic background In 1846 Newcastle was declared a free port and authorities identified the need to have a customs headquarters. In the same year Mr W.A. Scott's property, Newcastle House, was let to the government for use as a Customs House. Prior to the erection of the current Customs House there was considerable local agitation for a new building, the increase in shipping having placed great demands on the inadequate temporary facilities. During the later 1860s six thousand pounds was placed on the estimates for the purpose of building a new Customs House and tenders were called but nothing came of the move. July 1874 a tender by Messrs Jennings and Pallister had been accepted. In October 1876 the last stone was laid in the building and the contractors celebrated by holding a small party on the site, toasting each other and various other officials. The Union Jack and Ensign were hoisted to the top of the building. No alcohol-free-zone in those days! 36 The Hub February 2011

Freeloaders take over the JDCHR gazebo Right: Phil and Margaret Smith B e l o w : McAlpine Steve Lilly B o b and Right: Public transport makes an appearance on the promenade, proving that the railway line to Newcastle Station isn t needed after all THE HISTORY OF AUSTRALIA DAY The tradition of noticing 26 January began early in the nineteenth century with Sydney almanacs referring to First Landing Day or Foundation Day. That was the day in 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip, commander of the First Fleet of eleven convict ships from Great Britain and the first governor of New South Wales, arrived at Sydney Cove. The raising of the Union Jack there symbolised British occupation of the eastern half of the continent claimed by Captain James Cook on 22 August in 1770.The tradition of having Australia Day as a national holiday on 26 January is a recent one. Not until 1935 did all the Australian states and territories use that name to mark that date. Not until 1994 did they begin to celebrate Australia Day consistently as a public holiday on that date. 38 The Hub February 2011
