The bypass system is usually employed on a temporary basis to allow work to take place by pumping fluid around the work area without stopping the normal flow. 6 Types of Bypass Systems There are basically 3 types of bypass systems OpenSystem: These applications involve taking suction from sources that are open to the atmosphere and pumping to areas that are also open to the atmosphere Examples: Pumping from one lake to another lake Pumping from one manhole to another manhole Open System Puerto Rico Water Restoration Project 6

7 Open System Puerto Rico Water Restoration Project Closed System These applications involve pumping from a closed source, usually under pressure, into another closed area, also usually under pressure. Examples: Pumping from one tank to another tank. Pumping from one pressurized line to another pressurized line like a force main. 7

8 Closed System Combination System These applications involve taking suction from an Open System (such as a manhole or sump) and pumping into a Closed System (such as a pressurized pipeline or tank) so that back pressure is experienced at the end of the discharge line or vice versa. Example: Pumping from a manhole into a force main Pumping from a lake to a cooling tower 8

13 Questions to Ask What kind of fluid are we pumping? Where are we pumping from? (manhole, wet well, open pit, flange connection on tank, etc ) Where are we discharging into (open manhole, force main)? How far apart? How deep is manhole or how high is discharge point? How much storage capacity do we have? How big is the opening we will be pumping from? How close can the pumps sit to the opening? What are the flows at peak and average daily flows? Job Walk Project information Discharge piping layout: After determining the flow to be pumped, the next step is to determine where to place the discharge and suction piping Is the closest destination for the piping layout the easiest route to take? 14 Questions to Ask When discharging into an active force main, what is the pressure to overcome? When connecting to a force main, what type of connection are we attaching to? Will our discharge be crossing any obstacles (rail roads, creeks, driveways, bike paths, etc.) What is your elevation change from one manhole to another? (static discharge head) Job Walk Questions What is the duration of the bypass project? Is Pump Watch Required? Will engine noise be a problem? Always recommend back up pumps Will we need automatic controls? Telemetry? SCADA? Who will be responsible for daily maintenance and fueling? Do we have designated areas suitable for staging and installation efforts? 14

15 Observing Your Surroundings Flow from a residential area usually has a flow characteristic that is higher in the early morning and evening during the work week and can be different on weekends. Knowing where the primary flow comes from is important for sizing the pumps to match the flow and the overall bypass system design.
