3. MAINTENANCE BREAK-IN PERIOD Suspension After the first 500 miles, all bolts should be re-torqued to specs. Take special note that bolt torque values for air ride suspensions are different than walking beam or spring suspension bolt torque values. If suspension is air ride, check shocks for leaks; also check air bags for damage that may lead to rupture and all air fittings for minor leaks. Tighten if required. Axles 1. Check bearing adjustment, after the initial 25 miles, by placing hand on wheel hub. If excessive heat is detected then check bearing adjustment. 2. Check tire inflation after the initial trip. 3. Check torque on wheel nuts to spec after initial 25 miles. 4. Change hub oil after first 1,000 miles. Burnishing of New Brake Linings New brake linings must be properly burnished before full brake performance can be obtained. Failure to burnish new linings will cause premature wear and glazing of lining and drums resulting in expensive repairs. During the first miles, brake application pressures should be reduced to 50% of normal, gradually increasing to normal over the 1000 mile break in period. Paint For the first 30 days of operation, do not use high-pressure sprayers, strong cleaning agents, detergents, abrasives or brushes. Wash trailer only with water and a soft sponge. 3

AXLES After the first 25 miles, the temperature of all hubs should be checked. The hubs should run warm, but if they feel hot, then the wheel bearing adjustment should be checked. Check if the axial play is between '' and ''. If the axial play is not correct, please refer to the stemco pro-torq nut adjustment procedure. OIL BATH HUBS The hubs have been filled with 75W-90 Synthetic oil. The oil level in the hubs should be checked through the inspection window prior to every trip to be sure they are at the required level. TIRES While the tires are cold, air pressure should be checked daily, as recommended by the tire manufacturer. Tires should be checked frequently for cuts, abrasions or foreign objects lodged in the thread or between the duals. If any of these situations are found, they should be corrected immediately. 7

AUTOMATIC SLACK ADJUSTERS Lubrication The self-adjusting slack adjuster should be lubricated in conjunction with the lubrication prescribed for the vehicle chassis. The lubrication interval should not, however, exceed 50,000 miles or 3 months. Hipertech APG1 grease is recommended. The use of moly-disulphide loaded grease or oil is not recommended since it may lower friction capabilities in the adjusting clutch parts, and decrease automatic adjustment reliability. Inspection 1. During normal lubrication intervals, visually inspect slack adjuster and anchor bracket for damage. Check that anchor bracket is tight and the control arm is in its Full Release position. 2. Maintaining proper brake adjustment and brake balance cannot be accomplished by the slack adjuster alone. The condition of foundation brake components has a direct bearing on the effectiveness of brake adjustment. Therefore, periodic inspection of these components is necessary. a) BRAKE CHAMBERS Check that brake chamber mounting bolts are tight and proper alignment is maintained to avoid interference between chamber pushrod and chamber housing. Verify that brake chamber pushrod length is equal on opposing brake chambers of the same axle. b) CAMSHAFT BUSHINGS Optimum brake adjustment cannot be achieved when worn bushings are used. 8

In Service Checking Procedure A self adjusting slack adjuster should never have to be manually adjusted in service. The only time it should be manually adjusted is during installation or at reline. By constantly manually adjusting, the internal clutch life can be shortened. Effective push rod travel as recommended by the air chamber manufacturers. Type 36 1 ½ to 2 ¼ stroke Type 30 1 ½ to 2 stroke 100 PSI service Type 30 long stroke 1 ½ to 2 ½ stroke brake application Type 24 long stroke 1 ½ to 2 stroke Type to 1 ¾ stroke The air chamber push rod stroke can be difficult to measure properly; the following methods can be used : With a tape measure, measure the movement of the push rod from the completely released position to the applied position (100 PSI, Fig. 1). This movement can also be measured by marking the push rod where it exits the air chamber (brake released), then apply the brake and measure the distance from the mark to the face of the chamber. Also note in the fully applied position if the push rod over stroke indicator is exposed. If the adjuster is not maintaining the proper push rod travel, before replacing the slack adjuster, check the condition of the foundation brake i.e. : worn cam shaft bushing, worn cam shaft, weak or broken return springs, etc. The adjuster is not a cure-all for deficiencies in the foundation brake. 9

Measure of the free stroke Measure the free stroke (Fig.3). Use a lever to measure the movement of the slack adjuster until the brake shoes contact the drum. The free stroke should be 1/2 to 5/8. The brakes may drag if they are adjusted to less than 1/2 free stroke (free stroke is the amount of movement of the automatic slack adjuster to move the brake shoes against the brake drum). Take the free stroke measurement using the following procedure: - Measure from the face of the brake chamber to the center of the clevis pin while the break is release (measure x) - Use a pry bar to move the slack adjuster and position the linings against the drum, brakes applied. Measure the same distance again (measure y) - Subtract X from Y to obtain the in-service free stroke. The measurement must be inch If the free stroke measurement is not within specification, please refer the the slack adjuster manufacturer procedure to readjust them. 10

6. WHEELS After the first 25 miles, carefully check all lug nuts or wheel studs to be sure that none have worked loose. For disc wheels, all studs (3/4-16) are to be torque to 500 ft.-lb. dry. All wheels should be checked periodically for cracks or distortions. Break In Period First 1000 miles. All threads are right hand metric. Tighten flange nuts to 50 ft-lb. following sequence shown. Check disc wheels for proper positioning on pilots and proper seating against drum back. Tighten flange nuts 450 to 500 ft.-lb following sequence shown. INNER CAP NUTS Torque cap nuts to 50 ft.-lb. using sequence shown. Then tighten cap nuts to recommended torque ft.-lb. DRY OUTER CAP NUTS Torque cap nuts to 50 ft lb. using sequence shown. Then tighten cap nuts to recommended torque ft.-lb. DRY 11

8. AIR SYSTEM Suspension Ride Height Adjustment Ridewell RAR K US model air suspension is designed to operate at the specified ride height. The ride height is the distance from the center line of the axle to the underside of the frame, at the axle to which the height control valve is attached. The correct ride height is indicated by the first number after a dash in the model number. For example, models would require a 9 ride height. If measuring to the top of the axle, add 2 1/2 to your measurement to determine the actual ride height (e.g. a measurement to the top of the axle of 6 ½ would indicate a 9 ride height). Air Ride Height Adjustment To adjust your air ride height, connect the trailer to a compressed air supply with approximately the pressure of the normal supply system. Measure the ride height if you wish the trailer to be raised or lowered. Adjust the height control valve by loosening the clamped rod end on the adjustment rod attached the valve. Relocate the rod end until the proper height dimension is obtained. Re-clamp the rod end to the rod at this time. When adjusting the ride height control valve, block the tires and release the trailer brakes. The axle must rotate freely in order to avoid a false reading. The height control valve has very small orifices and 5 to 15 second time delay. You must allow sufficient time for the system to stabilize. The response time will appear to be extremely lengthy. Be patient. Once set to the proper ride height, test-drive the trailer, and then check the ride height once again to assure an accurate adjustment. Notice that the use of one valve removes the requirement for synchronization found with most other air suspension systems. This feature will save you many hours of service time and much expense in servicing your air system. 12

AIR TANKS The air reservoir tanks are equipped with a drain cock to release all the air that is being stored in the tank. Periodically, these reservoirs should be drained, as condensation will cause moisture to accumulate in the tank and may lead to freeze up problems in the system. If the condensation is milky in color, the truck air compressor may need attention. AIR VALVES These valves control the air brake system and therefore should be checked frequently for air leaks which could affect the operation of the brakes. Always install wheel chocks both in front and rear of tires before checking for leaks. Leaks may be checked for by pressurizing for air bubbles that would indicate a leak. Any air leaks should be corrected immediately. GLAD HANDS Insure positive engagement with mating glad hand, check brakes for proper application (Glad hand may be switched if brakes don t apply). If Glad hands leak air, seal may have to be replaced. AIR LINES Check air lines for leaks or damaged areas. Worn or damaged air lines should be replaced immediately. Air leaks should also be fixed immediately. Air leakage can overburden the truck air compressor and could affect the reservoir pressure. 13

AIR BRAKE CHAMBERS On the spring brake style, air pressure within the brake chamber is required to release the spring (emergency) brake. When the trailer is supplied with air pressure the spring is automatically released, but if air pressure is lost then the spring automatically applies the emergency brake. In addition to this system, there is also a built in release tool that may be used to release the brakes in the absence of air pressure. Remove the tool that is stored in the side of the chamber by removing the nut and washer. Insert the tool into the hole in the back of chamber. Turn the tool about one quarter of a turn to engage it. Install washer and nut previously removed onto end of tool. With a wrench, turn the nut clockwise so that the tool retracts the spring. To return brake system to regular running condition, simply reverse this procedure, remove the tool and return it to the storage position. Air brake chambers should be carefully inspected every 50,000 miles or yearly. Diaphragms and any marginal parts should be replaced. Replace the corresponding parts for the other chamber on the same axle. This will aid in even brake application and releasing. WARNING: Service on these chambers should only be done by a qualified serviceman. Inexperience could result in serious injury or death. 14

9. ELECTRICAL Connector Plug Combo Periodically check both halved for contact corrosion or loose connections. Either or both conditions can affect current flow. Proper operation of lights requires a clean, secure contact of the electrical connector. A light coating of grease should be maintained on both connectors to prevent corrosion. Wiring Periodically check the wiring for damage or poor connections and repair immediately. Lights Your trailer has been equipped with LED tail, signal and brake lights. The main connections are made of Sealco harness and the auxiliary lamps are typically connected in the rear bumper accessed by removing the tail light. It is important to never cut the harness. Several auxiliary outputs are available on this harness. Wire Colour Codes White Black Yellow Red Green Brown Blue Ground Auxiliary lamps Left hand turn signal Stop lamps Right hand turn signal Marker / Clearance & Licence ABS signal (if equipped) WARNING: Service on electrical components should only be done by a qualified serviceman. Inexperience could result in serious injury or death. 15

10. PAINT The best way to maintain your trailer s lustrous finish is to keep it clean by frequently washing with warm water. Ice melting salt, road oils and tar, tree sap, chemicals and other foreign matter may damage the trailer s finish if left on painted surfaces. Prompt washing may not completely remove all the deposits and additional cleaners may be needed. When using additional cleaners, be sure they are safe for use on painted surfaces. If cleaning agents are used, they should be flushed from the surface and not allowed to dry. Any major stone chips or deep scratches should be repaired promptly. Bare metal will corrode quickly and may develop into major repair expense. 17

11. KING PIN UPPER COUPLER PARTS & PROCEDURE Visually inspect the mounting of the upper coupler or plate and measure the curve of the upper coupler using a straight rod at least one metre long and a slide caliper.
