Assembly Instructions for the model MULTI JET BOAT Order No.: 2155 Brief description of the model The MULTI JET BOAT is based on a Swedish pilot boat, which is also used as a maritime rescue boat. In developing the model, the Swedish boat was used as a source of ideas to enable model builders to incorporate as many of their own ideas as possible into the model. The CNC-machined vacuum-moulded ABS parts make it suitable even for less practiced model builders. The railings are made of 2mm laser-cut ABS, saving you the trouble of soldering them together from wires. The windows come standard as complete decals, the decal sheet also includes some separate decals of only the window frames, giving the model builder the option of having transparent windows. The dual jet drive provides impressive operating performance. The model has adequate space for installation of lighting (order no. 2381) or a sound module (order no S). The new kit was developed using state-of-the-art design methods on a CAD system Ideal model for model builders with little basic knowledge of model shipbuilding Hull, deck, and superstructure of vacuum-moulded ABS, CNC-machined Many superstructure, deck parts, railings, and other parts of laser-cut ABS Set of fittings included, consisting of injection moulded parts, such as the mast, aerials, lights, tyfon, bollard, anchor, lifesavers, and lip Included in delivery: vacuum-moulded ABS parts for hull, decks, superstructure, covering, and life raft, lasercut wood parts for interior braces, railings, and other small parts, complete set of fittings, two jet drives, shaft couplings, parts for rudder linkage, wires, hook-and-loop strip, small parts, decal sheet, instructions in DE, EN, and FR, construction diagramme. KG, D Kirchheim/Teck, Germany, acknowledge the obligation to correct those defects within the limitations described below. The consumer can not take advantage of rights under this manufacturer s declaration if the failure in the usability of the product is due to natural wear, use under competition conditions, incompetent or improper use (including incorrect installation), or external influences. This manufacturer s declaration does not affect the consumer s legal or contractual rights regarding defects arising from the purchase contract between the consumer and the vendor (dealer). Extent of the guarantee If a claim is made under guarantee, we undertake at our discretion to repair or replace the defective goods. We will not consider further claims, especially for reimbursement of costs relating to the defect (e.g. installation /

removal costs) and compensation for consequent damages unless they are allowed by statute. This does not affect claims based on legal regulations, especially according to product liability law. Guarantee requirements The purchaser is required to make the guarantee claim in writing, and must enclose original proof of purchase (e.g. invoice, receipt, delivery note) and this guarantee card. He must send the defective goods to us at his own cost, using the following address. Fa. Graupner GmbH & CO KG, Serviceabteilung, Henriettenstr.94-96, D Kirchheim/Teck The purchaser should state the material defect or manufacturing fault or the symptoms of the fault in as accurate a manner as possible so that we can check whether our guarantee obligation is applicable. The goods are transported from the consumer to us and from us to the consumer at the risk of the consumer. Duration of validity This declaration only applies to claims made to us during the claim period as stated in this declaration. The claim period is 24 months from the date of purchase of the product by the consumer from a dealer in the Federal Republic of Germany (date of purchase). If a defect arises after the end of the claim period, or if the evidence or documents required according to this declaration in order to make the claim valid are not presented until after this period, then the consumer forfeits any rights or claims from this declaration. Limitation by lapse of time If we do not acknowledge the validity of a claim based on this declaration within the claim period, all claims based on this declaration are barred by the statute of limitations after six months from the time of claim, but not before the end of the claim period. Applicable law This declaration, and the claims, rights and obligations arising from it, are based exclusively on the applicable German Law, without the norms of international private law, and excluding UN retail law. Important safety notes You have purchased a model from which together with the corresponding suitable accessories a functioning RC model can be built. Compliance with the assembly and operating instructions in connection with the model and its installation, operation, use, and the servicing of the components connected with the model can not be monitored by GRAUPNER. Therefore, GRAUPNER assumes no liability for losses, damage, or costs that are connected with the faulty operation, faulty behaviour, or are associated with the aforementioned in any manner. Unless made mandatory by law, the obligation of the company GRAUPNER to pay damage claims for any reason (including personal injury, death, damage to buildings, and damage due to loss of sales or business, due to interruption of business, or other indirect or direct consequent damage) emanating from the use of the model, is fully excluded. Under any circumstances and in all cases, the total liability is restricted to the amount that you actually paid for this model. The start-up and operation of the model occurs exclusively and solely at the risk of the operator. Only careful and thoughtful operation can protect against personal injury and property damage. Before using the model for the first time, check whether your private liability insurance covers the operation of model boats of this type. If necessary, get a special RC model liability insurance policy.

These safety instructions must be kept and, if the model is sold another person, must be passed on to them. The following points must be observed: The model is not suitable for children under 14 years old. Due to the high speed, the model must NEVER be operated when people and animals are in the water, because, otherwise, they would be at considerable risk of injury. Do not operate your model in nature conservation areas, protected landscape areas, or water pollution control areas. Never operate it in salt water. Never operate it under adverse weather conditions, such as rain, thunderstorm, strong winds, high waves, strong water currents, et cetera. Before operating the model, check whether the radio control system is working properly and to ensure that the connections are safe and secure. If dry cells are used for the power supply, they should never be recharged. Only rechargeable batteries may be recharged. Before operation, the batteries must be charged, and the range of the radio control must be checked. In particular, the transmitter and receiver batteries must be charged before each trip. Check whether the channel you are using is free (applies only for 27/40 MHz systems). Never operate if you are not sure whether the channel is free. If other model builders are nearby, ask them about the channel being used. Observe the recommendations and notes for your radio control and accessories. Work on the propulsion parts only with the motor power supply disconnected. When the drive battery is connected, you and other persons should never get near the area of the jets or other turning parts, because this constitutes a substantial danger of injury. The recommended operating voltage should not be exceeded. If the voltage is too high, this can result in overheating of the motor or speed controller or melting of the electric leads. This can result in the destruction of the model or a smouldering fire. Make sure all drive components can move freely. This applies particularly during running operations, because leaves and other things can get stuck in the drive components. In such a case, the motors, the speed controller, and the rudder servo can be destroyed by excess stress. Make sure the travel of the servos is not mechanically impaired. Avoid short-circuiting batteries and rechargeable batteries or exposing them directly to water. Let the motors and speed controllers cool down after each run. Do not touch parts that may be hot. Remove the rechargeable batteries and other batteries during transport and when the model is not in use. Do not expose the model to high humidity, heat, cold, or dirt. During transport, secure the model and RC components against damage or shifting. If you operate the model in flowing water (such as a water), be aware that the model can float away in case of a malfunction or empty battery. IMPORTANT: When retrieving the model, do not put yourself or others in danger. Pay particular attention to ensure that the model is watertight. A model boat can sink if water intrudes. Before each run, check whether there is any damage and whether water can penetrate into the jets or its linkages through the shaft seal. Protect the model against water penetration. Make sure that the covers can not slip down from the model during operation. Make sure that even if water penetrates into the model, it can not reach the RC components. IMPORTANT: The drive batteries, which are connected in parallel, may be connected only during running operations, because without load, interactions can occur between the two batteries that could damage or destroy them. Therefore, connect the batteries only when beginning running operations, and disconnect

them afterwards. Never store the rechargeable batteries with the parallel cable connected. Also, never charge them when connected in parallel. IMPORTANT: Never connect rechargeable batteries with different charging status or number of cells (voltage), because this can lead to the destruction of the batteries and the model. If you are not sure whether the batteries have the same charging status, connect just one of the batteries. When it is empty, disconnect it, and connect the next one. Batteries with different nominal capacities may never be connected, either. The combination of different types of batteries (such as NiMH with NiCd) is not permissible. Service and maintenance Clean the model after each use. Remove any water that may have penetrated. If water has penetrated the RC components, set them out to dry, and then send them to the appropriate GRAUPNER service location for a check-up. Clean the model and the RC components only with suitable cleaners. Check with your dealer. Lubricate the boat shaft regularly. If the model is not to be operated for a longer period of time, all moving parts (boat shaft, et cetera) must be disassembled, cleaned, and newly lubricated. Notes on assembling the model Before assembling the model, study the construction drawing and the instructions all the way through. Use the parts list to help you. Instructions and parts list are arranged extensively in the sequence of assembly. For the novice model builder, we also recommend the book: Model Shipbuilding for Beginners, ISBN This book describes all the necessary work steps of model shipbuilding in detail, making it very helpful for beginners. It can be ordered from vth-verlag, Baden-Baden, under Order No (you can order online at or from your dealer or at bookstores. When using tools, be aware of the possible dangers. NOTE: The polarity of the G2 connector system is designed so that the nub on the plastic casing is always the plus pole (red wire). If you follow this specification consistently, batteries and speed controllers can be exchanged, and the system is protected against incorrect polarity. Solder the cables to the connectors and jacks, and then press them from the back side of the housing into the plastic casing. TIP: Use a small screwdriver to push the connector or jack into the housing until it moves into place with a noticeable click. Do not press on the cable or pull it from the other side with pliers. To do the fine sanding of the surfaces, use 600 grain waterproof sandpaper; this is also the optimal sandpaper for surfaces that will be painted later. Make sure that parts that are difficult to paint after assembly are painted before assembly. Notes on painting are found at the end of the instructions under the heading Painting. Despite the high-precision manufacturing of the laser-cut ABS parts, you still have to spackle over the connections in part, in order to get a smooth surface. Any nitro-free model filler is a suitable putty, such as express putty (Order No. 938) and two-component quick fill putty SK 30 (Order No. 924). For younger model builders, we recommend the odourless, solvent-free, and environmentally friendly express putty (Order No. 938). Observe the instructions for use on the package! You can suppress the spark for the electric motors with a 470 nf condenser (Order No. 3588) by connecting the two motor connectors to the condenser. Route the electrical wires neatly without crossing. Never let a plus line come into electrical contact with a minus line. Immobilize all the cables so that they can not get into the moving parts of the propulsion system, by using cable ties, for example. Use only suitable cables that are adequate for the electric currents that occur during operations. With the recommended components, a cable cross section of Ø2.5 mm² is adequate (such as Order No. 3689). Run the receiver aerial as far as possible from the wires for the operating current (at least 3 cm).

To lubricate the shafts, use only grease or oil that does not endanger or pollute the water (grease Order No.: 570, oil Order No. 206). Clean excess lubricant off any glued connection before gluing. This can be done by sanding and cleaning with a non-fatty detergent or ethanol. The same goes for the surfaces to be painted, so the paint will stick well. Recommended adhesives for different kinds of connections: Material Material Suitable Adhesives Plastic motor mount - Wood Fast setting glue ABS - Wood Fast setting glue, UHU acrylite ABS - ABS Fast setting glue, UHU acrylite, UHU plast spezial ABS - Metal Fast setting glue, UHU acrylite Wood - Wood Fast setting glue, UHU hart, casein glue Wood - Metal Fast setting glue Observe the instruction for use of adhesives! Note special instructions in the assembly instructions on the use of particular adhesives! When sing acetone, ethanol, and other solvents as cleaners, special precautionary measures are required. Follow the specific instructions for use in each case. Assembly instructions Assemble the boat stands (Item 1, 2 and 3). TIP: Soft felt or foam (such as Order No ) can be glued onto the surfaces upon which the ship s hull will rest, so that it does not scratch so easily. Especially after painting, the rump is very sensitive. Cleanly cut out all the ABS parts in the kit and remove the protruding ABS debris with sandpaper. Check the fit of the roof (42) and the superstructure (40). Glue the laser-cut roof hatch (43) onto the roof (42). Next check the fit between the superstructure (40) and the superstructure base (39). After you have checked the precision of the fit of the superstructure base with the reinforcing plywood frame (41), glue the frame in place. Make sure that the complete superstructure will later fit on the deck. When seated, the reinforcing frame should have a gap of about 1 cm to the lower edge of the superstructure.

Now glue the windshield wipers (83) onto the window frames (77 and 78), as shown in the illustration. Now assemble the mast from the pack of accompanying materials. For this purpose you need the laser-cut parts (49,50,51,52,53,54,65, and 66). As you can see in the diagramme, each part has its specified position; be aware of the drying times of your adhesive, to avoid any deformation. In the next step, remove the radar device from the vacuum-moulded ABS parts; then glue parts 60 and 61 together. When the glue for the mast is dry, mount the other parts on the mast. To do so, take the crewfinder aerial (57) and stick the 4 wires (58) in the holes provided. Then glue the complete

crewfinder aerial to the mast. Then glue the upper mast aerial (59) to the specified place. Do the same with the other aerials 55 and 56 and the round lights (64). Now also glue on the radar device, which you assembled in the previous step, in its proper place and do likewise with the searchlight (62) and the mast lights (63). Finally, cut out a 12x8mm piece of transparent ABS (69) and glue it to the roof headlight (68). Now it s time for the running lights. For this purpose, take the base plate (71), the side plate (72) and the end plate (73) from the laser-cut ABS parts. Put them together as shown in the figure and glue on the lights (63). In the next step, assemble the life raft. For this purpose, take the 2 halves of the vacuummoulded parts and glue them together. Now take the parts for the life raft holder (86,87 and 88) and glue them as shown in the figure. Take care that the parts (87) and (86) are adapted to the o deck curvature.

Install the breakwater (37) by cutting out the vacuum-moulded part on the back side and sliding in the insert (38). Finally, glue the lip (96) onto the front of the breakwater. With parts (74,75, and 76), make the life preserver holder. Glue the rests (75) into the base plate (74) as shown in the diagramme, and insert the life preserver (76). The door on the back side of the superstructure is installed by connecting the base of the door (46) with the window frames of the door (47) and attaching the door handle (48).

Now assemble all the parts. Glue the superstructure window area to the superstructure base; then glue on the roof (42) and install the previously prepared parts as follows: the window frames in the rear (82), the door (46) and the mast on the right side as shown in the figure. Then drill a hole for the marine communications aerial (70) and glue it in place. Now attach the handrail to the superstructure. The handrail is number 44 together with the handrail stanchion 45. The position is shown in the diagramme.

To finally finish the superstructure, now attach the foghorn (67), die window frames on the side of the superstructure (79,80, and 81), as well as the roof headlight (68 and 69). The positions of all parts belonging to the superstructure are shown in the diagramme. After the superstructure is finished, it is time to assemble the deck. For this purpose, take the deck (32) and the inner frame 33,34, and 35 and assemble them as shown in the figure. Make sure you align inner frame exactly, because the holes are used for the drilling for the railing. When the glue is dry, use a suitable drill to drill the holes for the railing from below. Then turn the deck over, and use a triangular file to file out the holes to fit the railing stanchions (91 to 95).

Now finish the deck. You do this by attaching the side boxes 89 and 90, sanding down the bottom of the footplates (98) so that they fit into the cut-out provided, mounting the life raft as shown in the figure, and gluing the railing (91 to 95) into the previously drilled and filed holes. Be very careful about the position of the individual railing parts. Finally, also glue the breakwater onto the front part of the deck. Now also attach the bollards (finished parts 97) as shown in the right figure an; then the assembly of the deck is complete. The last work step is to assemble the hull. To do so, first prepare the servo support. This is done as follows: Glue the side parts of the servo supports (22) and the servo base (23) to the front part of the servo base (21), as shown in the figure. Then screw the servo (24 Order No.: 7950) into the finished servo support. Do this 2x.

The motor is installed as follows: Solder the condensers to the motor. The connect the controller to the motors as shown in the figure. Make sure the polarity is correct! Now attach the reinforcing strip (41) to the hull. 7

Now place the jets into the cut-outs in the hull. Check for correct positioning as you insert the jet. Make sure that both the lower section, which serves as water intake and also the section at the stern, for water expulsion, fit exactly. Otherwise, water can penetrate the model and lead to irreparable damage. When you are certain that the jets are positioned correctly, glue the jets along the edge. Then check to see that the jets are seated correctly. IMPORTANT: When assembling the jets, follow the separate instructions for the jet drive! Screw on the rear cover for the jets and run the linkages through the drill holes. You can find the correct seating for the linkages in the figures and installation instructions for the jet.

Screw all the parts together as shown in the separate jet construction drawing. Finally, check the stern of the boat exactly to ensure that the linkage and reversing flap are functioning correctly. In the next step, install the speed controller and drive battery. Make sure the parts fit properly. Use the hook-and-loop strip provided.

Now take the anchor and the anchor pocket (ABS cut-out) that is used to attach the anchor. Drill a hole at the appropriate spot, and glue the anchor pocket in place from the inside. Shorten the anchor, and blue the decal over the opening; use a knife to cut a hole for the anchor. Glue the Anker into the anchor pocket. Now, all that is left is to glue the deck and hull together and to affix the decals.

Painting Ask your model retail store or paint retail store about the optimal paints. Following the instructions for use of the paints. Use ONLY paints from the same manufacturer and of the same paint type. Otherwise, the paints could react with one another and peel off or blister. Be particularly careful in combining spray paints and brush-on paints; always test them on scrap pieces to see whether the paints react with each other. To ensure that the paint sticks well, use fine waterproof sandpaper (grain 600 to 800) to sand the surfaces. Then use a non-fatty detergent or ethanol to de-grease the surfaces. Avoid touching the surfaces until they are painted, because perspiration from your hands can transfer new fats to the surface. When spray painting, completely tape over all the areas that are not to be painted. Seal all openings, because fine paint aerosols can get into even the smallest openings. To tape fine, straight edges, use the narrowest tape possible, such as decorative trim. Glue it without tension, cleanly and precisely; then you can cover the remaining surfaces with painter s tape and paper or foil. Before starting your construction, consider how and in what order you will be painting the model. Certain places can be painted later only with difficulty or not at all. TIP: To make it easier to paint small parts, you should use two-sided tape to mount them on a wooden stick or something comparable at the point of the later glued connection. In this way, you can paint the entire part all at once. Colour scheme The following colours are suggestions, which can be changed to suit your own tastes. To make it easier to select the correct colours later on, only the RAL colours are indicated. With this information, you can have the paints mixed at any paint or model building retail store. Tell the experts at the store what the paints will be used for, so that they can select the right kind of paint. We recommend synthetic resin paint. DO NOT USE nitrocellulose paint! PILOT: Hull, superstructure, breakwater, railing, bollards: Traffic orange RAL 2009 Superstructure, radar device, deck, life raft, aerials: Traffic white RAL 9016 Footplates, deck lights: White aluminium RAL 9006 Rubbing strake: Anthracite grey RAL 7016 Running light holders, deck, foghorn: Deep black RAL 9005 Running lights: Red (port), green (starboard) Applying the decals 1 Always cut out only the decal needed at the moment. Use sharp scissors and cut as precisely as possible on the edge. 2 When applying the decals, they should first be placed on the model with the protective foil still in place, to adjust the positioning and alignment on the model. This makes it possible to detect and eliminate any imprecision. 3 TIP: To make it easier to affix large decals, align the decal on the model and tape one end in place (to keep the decal from sliding). 4 TIP: Glue the decals to the model without tension, because the film is slightly elastic and could stretch or deform if under stress. 5 TIP: When affixing large decals, blisters can be formed. Use a sharp pin to puncture them and then press out the air out through the opening with a piece of felt (squeegee).

Maiden voyage Choose a day with optimal wind conditions and a body of water from which you can easily salvage the model. Charge the batteries and test the functions of the model. Check whether all parts are properly in place. Now you can start the maiden voyage. At the start, do not sail too far from the bank. Have fun building and operating your model MULTI JET BOAT.
