Please be sure to observe the safety notes included in the Appendix to these assembly instructions. If you ever dispose of the model, the complete assembly instructions and safety notes must also be passed on to the new owner. Introduction The AMIGO IV is a classic Graupner/SJ model aircraft which offers an exceptional performance in the air. The timelessly elegant AMIGO first appeared on the market in the year In glider form the model can be launched by hand-tow or bungee, but it can also be flown as a powered glider with a motor pylon. It is essential to read right through these assembly instructions before you fly the model, and to make sure you are familiar with the method of operating your HoTT COMPUTER SYSTEM. Pack contents 1. Fuselage with control surface linkages 2. Canopy 3. Left-hand wing panel 4. Right-hand wing panel 5. Tailplane 6. Fin 7. Steel rod wing joiner, 4.5 Ø x 155 mm 8. Pack of small hardware items 9. AMIGO IV decal sheet 10. Assembly instructions in German, English and French Please take the time to examine the components and accessories before you start assembling the model. If you are not satisfied with any part, or if anything is missing from the kit, kindly inform your dealer before you start construction. 3 Adhesives (not included) Cyano-acrylate ( cyano ) Order No Cyano-acrylate activator Order No UHU-ALLESKLEBER Kraft Order No Essential tools (not included) Ruler, scissors, flat-nose pliers, balsa knife, side-cutters, set of twist drills, 2.0 mm A/F allen key, screwdriver, film heat-gun or Profi Iron, Order No Required for electric version with motor pylon only: soldering iron. Assembling the model The model can be completed ready for the air in just a few hours. Nevertheless it is important to observe the following instructions accurately, as this will ensure that the first flight will be a complete success. The fuselage, with fin and tailplane Insert the fin in the slot, lay a ruler on the wing saddle, then sight along the fuselage from the nose to check that the fin is exactly vertical. Apply cyano along the joint lines; this adhesive penetrates well into the joints. When the glue has set hard, remove the rudder and glue the hinges in the slots using UHU-ALLES-KLEBER Kraft. Please take care to apply the glue sparingly, otherwise the excess may run into the hinge line and jam the rudder. There should be an even gap about 0.5 mm wide between fin and rudder. Prepare the rudder and elevator servos by pressing the rubber grommets and metal spacer sleeves into the mounting lugs; these parts are supplied with the servos. The photo shows the prepared elevator servo, with the spacer sleeves fitted from the underside. Snip off the unwanted output arms using side-cutters, and drill out the linkage hole in the remaining output arm to 1.9 mm Ø. Switch the RC system on, and check that the servos are at centre before fitting the output arms. Place the servos in the fuselage and secure each with four self-tapping screws; these are also supplied with the servos. The tailplane can now be attached to the fuselage using the two allen-head screws and washers supplied in the hardware pack. Tighten the screws using a 2.0 mm A/F allen key, but only to the point where the tailplane cannot shift. Connect the clevises to the rudder and elevator horns before screwing the horns to the control surfaces. Please note that the two horns are not identical. You may need to bend the pushrods slightly at the tail end to ensure that they move smoothly through the exit slots in the fuselage. Mark the position of the horn holes on the rudder and elevator, and drill 1.9 mm Ø holes at the marked points. Fix the 3
horns to the control surfaces using two pan-head screws and one plastic spreader plate each. The picture shows the tailplane screwed to the fuselage, and the horns attached to the rudder and elevator. Snip off excess screw length using side-cutters. Caution: protect your eyes with goggles to avoid injury. The illustration shows the rudder pushrod connected to the servo and secured with a plastic keeper. Set each servo and each control surface to centre, then bend the pushrod at right-angles at the linkage hole position. Snip off excess pushrod length, so that about 1 mm projects above the plastic keeper. Screw the towhook to the underside of the fuselage using the pilot-holes already drilled. The towhook is not required if you only intend to fly the model at the slope or under electric power. Cut out the canopy, then attach it using UHU ALLESKLEBER Kraft. Tape the moulding in place while the glue is hardening. The wing Fit the two wing panels together using the steel rod joiner. The wing is held on the fuselage using rubber bands stretched between the two aluminium dowels which should now be fitted through the holes in the fuselage; check that they project by an equal amount on both sides before securing each with a few drops of cyano. RC installation: glider version Connect the servo leads to the receiver as follows: socket 1: switch harness, with receiver battery connected; socket 2: rudder servo; socket 3: elevator servo. Refer to the graphic label on the receiver to ensure that the connectors are the right way 4
round: the brown wire should always be at the top of the receiver. The receiver and receiver battery should be packed in soft foam in the fuselage to avoid damage. The photo above shows the arrangement of the RC system components in the fuselage. The fuselage is shown in cutaway form for clarity. The AMIGO IV with motor pylon The AMIGO IV can also be fitted with the motor pylon, Order No. 2910, if you wish to fly the model from a flat field site without using a bungee system (the motor pylon is not included in the pack). The picture shows the RC system installation for the electric-powered version. The fuselage is shown in cutaway form for clarity. Please note that the receiving system is switched on when you connect the G 3.5 plugs and sockets between the speed controller and the LiPo battery. From this moment it is possible that the motor connected to the system could suddenly burst into life at full power if something unexpected were to occur. For safety reasons the propeller should not be fitted to the motor until you have completed the installation and checked the working system. Always carry out the initial test-runs without the propeller fitted. It is essential to disconnect the G 3.5 plugs and sockets after every motor run or flight, as this avoids premature battery damage as well as promoting safety. Even when the model is not in use, a small current always flows when the G 3.5 plugs and sockets are 5
connected. In the long-term this could deep-discharge the LiPo battery, causing irreparable damage. Fit the motor pylon on the steel joiner between the two wing panels, push the wings firmly together, and fix the assembly to the fuselage using four rubber bands. The illustration shows the electric-powered version of the AMIGO IV with the motor pylon fitted. Decal sheet Before the decals are applied the covering film should be smoothed out using a film iron or heat-gun. Note: fluctuations in humidity and temperature may cause creases and slack areas in the covering film, but these can be removed using the tools mentioned above. Cut out the individual decals and apply them to the model in the arrangement shown in the kit box illustration. Balancing Assemble the model completely for balancing, i.e. with the whole RC system fitted. The correct Centre of Gravity is at a point 115 mm from the wing leading edge, measured at the root. Check the C.G. by supporting the model under the wing on two fingertips at the point indicated: the model should now balance level. Add trim ballast (Order No. 536, not GRAUPNER/SJ GmbH D KIRCHHEIM/TECK Modifications reserved. No liability for printing errors. 6 GERMANY 05/2013
included) to the extreme fuselage nose until the model remains horizontal. Note: the C.G. of the AMIGO IV is further aft than normal due to the tailplane s lifting airfoil. Control surface travels The control surface travels should be as follows, in each case measured at the trailing edge: elevator approx. 12 mm up and down, rudder approx. 40 mm to both sides of centre. The two-position Dual Rate switch on the MX-10 transmitter can be used to reduce the rudder and elevator travels by about 30%; move the switch back towards you for reduced travels. We recommend reduced travels for the first few flights. Flying Assemble the model completely, charge all the batteries, and check that the control surfaces are properly centred before undertaking the first flight. Wait for a day with little or no breeze. A good flying site is a flat grassy field, ideally with a gentle slope facing into wind. Note: for the initial test-glide push the model forward directly into any wind; the fuselage nose should be angled down slightly (by about 10 ). If necessary apply very slight rudder and elevator commands to keep the model gliding straight and flat. Fine-tuning is carried out using the trim sliders below and adjacent to the transmitter sticks. Always land the model directly into wind. All of us at Graupner/SJ hope you enjoy many fine flights with your new AMIGO IV Specification - AMIGO IV Wingspan approx mm Overall length approx mm Wing section NACA 4409 Wing area approx dm² Tailplane area approx. 7.5 dm² Total surface area approx dm² All-up weight approx g Replacement parts (not included) AMIGO IV canopy Order No AMIGO IV fuselage Order No AMIGO IV wing panels Order No AMIGO IV tailplane and fin Order No AMIGO IV decal sheet Order No Rubber bands, 65 mm Ø Order No
Safety notes Caution: cyano-acrylate adhesive must never be allowed to contact any part of your body, and your eyes in particular. For this reason we recommend the use of gloves and goggles when handling these materials. The workshop should be effectively ventilated. Store the adhesive out of the reach of children. It is a legal requirement to obtain third-party insurance before you operate any model aircraft. Before attempting to operate the model for the first time it is essential to read right through the assembly and operating instructions attentively. You alone are responsible for the safe operation of your RC model aircraft. Young persons must be supervised by a responsible adult who is aware of the possible hazards involved in the operation of model aeroplanes. In legal terms our models are classed as aircraft, and as such are subject to legal regulations and restrictions which must be observed at all times. Avoid short-circuits at all times. The high energy density of the batteries used in modelling involves a constant risk of explosion and fire. A radio-controlled model aircraft can only work properly and fulfil your expectations if it is built very carefully, and in accordance with the building instructions. Cautious and carefully considered action is essential in order to avoid personal injury and / or property damage. Nobody would climb into a full-size sailplane and try to fly it without first completing a course of training. Model flying is just such a skill, and has to be learned in exactly the same way. However, as manufacturers we have no means of influencing the way you build and operate your RC model aircraft, and for this reason we can do no more than point out the hazards expressly. We accept no further liability. If you need help, please enlist the aid of an experienced modeller, join a model club or enrol at a model flying training school. Model shops and the specialist model press are also good sources of information. The best course is always to join a club and fly at the approved model flying site. Adhesives contain substances which can be harmful to health under certain circumstances. It is therefore important to read and observe the notes and warnings supplied by the glue manufacturer. The operator must be in full possession of his bodily and mental capabilities. As with car driving, it is not permissible to fly a model aircraft under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Make sure that all passers-by and onlookers are aware of the hazards involved in the operation of your model. Remind spectators to keep a safe distance from the model. Always maintain a safe distance between your model and other people or objects. Never fly low over people or directly towards them. Radio-controlled models should only be flown in normal weather conditions, i.e. a temperature range of -5 to +35 C. More extreme temperatures can lead to changes in battery capacity, material characteristics, the strength of glued joints and other unwanted effects. All model flyers should behave in a way which minimises the danger to people and property. Never act in any manner which will disturb other pilots, or have an adverse effect on safe, orderly flying at the site. Don t operate your model aeroplane in the vicinity of overhead power cables, industrial sites, residential areas, public roads, school playgrounds or sports fields etc. Pre-flight checks Check that the radio control system works correctly and at full range before every flight: switch on the transmitter and receiving system, and ensure that all the control surfaces work smoothly, and deflect in the correct sense in relation to the stick movements. If you are a beginner to this type of model flying, we recommend that you enlist an experienced model pilot to help you check and test-fly the model. Please don t ignore our warnings. They refer to hazardous materials and processes which, if ignored, can result in fatal injury or serious damage to property. If you are to fly your model safely and avoid problems, it is essential that you are aware of its position and attitude throughout each flight - so don t let it fly too far away. If you detect a control problem or interference during a flight, immediately land the model to prevent a potential accident. Model aeroplanes must always give way to full-size aircraft. Take-off and landing strips should be kept free of people and other obstacles. Your RC system can only work reliably if the batteries are kept fully charged. 8
Never use hot, faulty or damaged batteries. It is important to observe the instructions supplied by the battery manufacturer.
