Where test probes are used in special test modules they can also be applied for the testing of connector cable systems. Purpose/Design/ The typical design of the different functional principles of PTR test probes is illustrated in Fig. 1. s are either drawn from bronze or nickel silver, or are turned from brass. They are gold plated to improve their electrical and anti-corrosion characteristics. are made of hardened steel for maximum useful life. The significant feature here is a versatile range of effective probe heads, such as pointed tips. The plunger material is copper beryllium (ube) for the highest specification with regard to electrical conductivity over a long product life. contact probes with copper beryllium plungers are ideal for measuring applications, both where there is low potential difference and in peak current testing. s are alternatively enhanced with various layers of precious metal to meet additional anti-corrosion and abrasion requirements and give extra electrical conductivity and contact properties: 6

7 Hard gold has surface passivity, making it ideal for electrical contacts with hig chemical durability. With a hardness of up to 200 HV there are limits to its abrasion-resistance properties. Under favourable conditions, where radial movement is avoided, for example, its resistance to abrasion can be positively influenced. Volume resistance can then be regarded as constant. Rhodium sharp tips of the probe heads, with their high degree of penetration, can be upgraded. Because of their phosphorous content the electrical properties are less favourable than in the case of gold or rhodium. With regard to surface hardness chni lies between Au and Rh. The fact that layers are thicker means that is has better abrasion resistance than rhodium. onsiderably better surface quality is achieved by chemical plating than by electroplating, with the immersion which this requires. is one of the so-called platinum metals. Because of its extreme hardness, measuring up to 1000 HV, it is highly resistant to wear and tear. However, the trapped oxygen makes the individual layers rather more brittle. This factors is countered by reducing layer thickness, although any damage to thin and brittle rhodium layers can lead to a deterioration of their intrinsically good electrical contact properties. Nickel a distinction must be made here between electroplating and chemical plating (plating without current). Electroplated Nickel is characterised by extreme purity and a shiny metallic surface. However, there are limits to its application because of its inadequate adherence to contour and the brittleness of its layers caused by oxygen. 10 Head Styles Form A 90 taper bore For plug pins, wire-wrap pins and straight/curved connections. Applied with cleaned printed boards because of dirt risk. Form BST steel needle A sharp steel needle with a long implement life for reliable penetration of flux and dirt on uncleaned printed boards or component groups and for SMD contacts. Form waffle A universal head for straight or curved component leads, wire-wrap posts and connector pins. Form D round head For successful testing of strip conductors and mechanical connections, screws etc. with no risk of damage. Form EB steel tip insert As for B, but with additional penetration for uncleaned printed circuit boards. Form F flat head Especially suited to convex, clean contact points, to avoid surface damage. 10

11 Form G four-point crown For component leads, soldering points and test pads where there is no excessive dirt. Form H triangular head Throughplating contacts are no problem here, even with flux residues. Form K hexagonal head As for H, but with added contact penetration. Form M crown with central tip The combination of crown and central tip ensures contact reliability at almost all test points. Form Q self-cleaning head Applications as for G, but the undercut shape means that dirt is guided outwards. Form Q5 three-point crown, self-cleaning Application as for Q, with additionally favourable distribution of force over the contact points. Form V lance Tip with extra penetration of open and closed throughplating, and for level contact surfaces. Penetrates flux and dirt. 12 Lateral play/pinpointing (test point accuracy) laterel play S lateral play in assembled test probes is caused by the necessary manufacturing tolerances found between plunger and barrel. The result is that during application the tip of the probe can get out of alignment. The extent of the lateral play at the tip of the probe also depends on plunger length and on the type of plunger Fig. 1 guide (dual or single) used. The longer the guide and the shorter the spring, the less this lateral play will be. In determining test point accuracy, the tolerances present in the test adapter being used (play, displacement of the receptacle assembly holes) must be taken into account. Optimal pinpointing is achieved by a combination of spring contact probes with the shortest possible travel, double plunger guides and minimal adapter tolerance, or even perhaps the use of plate guides. The influence of lateral play on test point accuracy can, depending on the spring contact probe series and tip style being used, be reduced to 0.8 mm. able Test Especially for testing cables PTR Fig. 2 offers a wide range of switching probes, probes with thread and push back probes. 13 Presence Test for IT 1025 with headstyle 2S is designed for presence test. The plunger is equiped with an isolation cap and prevents the plunger from hitting the test pad area in case of absence of a component. Presence Test with Switching Test Probes PTR switching test probes are working on the principle closer. The test probe closes a circuit after a defined switching travel. In addition to the standards PTR offers a variant with an isolated head. 14 Detecting bent pins For detecting bent connector pins, special tipstyles with insulators are designed. They avoid electrical contact to the plunger and give no go signal to the system. Dimension and shape of insulator and plunger will be adjusted to the connector s configuration. Position Test Test Probes for Position test are designed to detect the right position of the sockets inside of a connector. The special head of the probe is equiped with a plate that sets up on the connector housing. The height of the edge is specified exactely according to the max. depth the socket should have. When the test probe do not make a contact to the socket, because it is missing or not in right position, the testsystem gets an information about a defect connector. Switching Test Probe Easy Replacement Design The new PTR receptacle system for switching test probes offers the possibility for rapid probe replacement without desoldering the wire. The wire has to be soldered once to the connector pin of the receptacle. The receptacle features an insulated dual-contact arrangement that allows a probe to be fitted and replaced in the receptacle without any wiring or de-soldering. This helps reducing the time in the replacement process. 14
