1 677 Nuclear ower lants: 2014 atw Comact Statistics At the end of the last year 2014 (key date: 31 December 2014), nuclear ower lants were oerating in 31 countries worldwide (cf. Table 1). In total, 441 nuclear ower lants were oerating on the key date. This means that the number increased by 5 units comared to the revious year s number on 31 December The ower outut of these nuclear ower lant units 1 amounted to around 405 GWe, the ower outut was aroximately 383 GWe This means that the available and caacities were about 6 GW, i.e. 1.5 % above the revious year s values of about 398 GWe and 376 GWe. (These values include revious ower urates of U.S. nuclear ower lants which are included for the first time). Six nuclear ower lants started oeration 1 in three countries in Four units reached initial criticality and were synchronized with the grid for the first time in 2014; two of these units also started u commercial oeration (cf. Tab. 1). Two units reached first criticality for the first time in The reactor unit Fangjianshan 1 in China reached initial criticality on 21 October 2014, was synchronized with the grid for the first time on 11 November 2014 and started commercial oeration on 15 December Fuqing 1 in China reached initial criticality on 24 July 2014, was synchronized with the grid for the first time on 20 August 2014 and started commercial oeration on 11 November In Russia the unit Rostov 3 and in Argentina the Atucha 2 unit reached first criticality and were synchronized with the grid. The two units Fangjianshan 2 and Hongyanhe 3 in China reached first criticality in 2014 and were reared for oeration. Additionally the Ningde 2 unit in China which reached first criticality on 20 December 2013 was ut in commercial oeration. Five nuclear ower lant units taken in oeration are equied with ressurized water reactors and have a caacity greater than 1,000 MWe. The Atucha 2 N is a ressurized heavy water reactor, No nuclear ower unit resumed oeration in 2013 after a longer shut-down. The Sanish oerator Nuclenor S.A. stoed oeration of the unit Santa Maria de Garona ahead of schedule on 28 December 2012; this decision was made in order to avoid anticiated exenses in 2013 due to new taxes on electricity generation in an uncertain environment regarding economic and aroval asects and was remature from a technical oint of view. Since 6 June 2013 the official status of the lant is long-term shutdown (new lant status in comarison with earlier notices). The restart of the 466 MW boiling water reactor is under rearation and suorted by the government and some industrial grous to secure the electricity suly of the Sanish consumers. 2 678 of the world-wide economic and financial crises as also the otion for a chea electricity roduction with unconventional natural gas (fracking) have been announced. At the end of last year 2014, 66 lants in 15 countries were under construction, in other words 4 units less than at the end of the revious year due to commissioning and new-build of units (Note: correction of earlier information resented in the atw quick statistics due to initial construction work and dating of units to the turn of the year). The caacity of these rojects amounts to about 68 GWe and 64 GWe ower outut, in other words both about 2 GW less than a year earlier. Three new nuclear ower lant rojects were started in 2014: New construction rojects are reorted from Argentina, Belarus, and the United Arab Emirates; one new roject each. This means a slight decrease of about 3 % regarding the (-2 GW) and caacity (-2 GW). Comared with the millennium change 1999/2000 this means that the number of rojects under construction has risen, when 30 nuclear ower lants were under construction worldwide. In Argentina the roject CAREM25 (25 MW) entered the active construction hase during The CAREM25 reactor is a domestically-designed and develoed small integral reactor. For the second time a nuclear ower unit roject, the roject Belarusian 2 (1,194 MW), was announced from Belarus. Two units are lanned to be in oeration in the 2020ies. Both units are of Russian VVERtye. One further nuclear ower lant roject was tackled in the United Arab Emirates with the unit Barakah 3 (1,400 MW). The exansion lans of the country comrise at least 4 to 8 units in the mid-term. At the end of 2014 three units have been under construction. Active construction rojects (numbers in brackets) listed are: Argentina (1), Belarus (2), Brazil (1), China (24), Finland (1), France (1), India (6), Jaan (2), Reublic of Korea (5), akistan (2), Russia (9), Slovak Reublic (2), Taiwan (2), the USA (5) a the United Arab Emirates (3). In addition, there are about 120 nuclear ower lant units in 25 countries worldwide that are in an advanced lanning stage, others are in the re-lanning hase ( status: 31 December 2014).
