1 REQUEST FOR SUPPORT OF REGISTRATION OF BW423 CROP KIND: Wheat TYPE: Canada Western Red Spring PROPOSERS: P. Hucl; C. Briggs, C. McCartney and C. Pozniak CDC, Univ. of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, S7N 5A8 TEST NUMBERS: BW423, W05129 PEDIGREE: CDC Bounty/FHB9 BW423 was selected from the cross CDC Bounty/FHB9 made at the University of Saskatchewan during the fall of The parental line FHB9 is a doubled haploid line developed by the Crop Development Centre and has the pedigree CDC Teal/ND2710//CDC Teal/McVey. The parental line FHB9 was selected on the basis of its reaction to Fusarium head blight in the 1999 Carman FHB inoculated nursery (University of Manitoba). The resulting F1 from the cross CDC Bounty/FHB9 was grown in the greenhouse during the winter of 1999/2000. The F2 was grown as a bulk at Saskatoon in 2000 and as an F3 bulk in a winter nursery. The F4 generation was grown as a space-planted bulk at Saskatoon in Seed from an F4 singleplant selection was grown in a rust nursery at Saskatoon in 2002 as an F5 hill and selected on the basis of rust reaction, plant type and straw strength. Seed from a single F5 spike was grown in a head row in a rust nursery in BW423 is derived from a bulked F6 head-row. The F7 was grown in an unreplicated yield trial nursery at Saskatoon in 2004 and selected on the basis of yield, height and straw strength. BW423 was evaluated as W05129 in local yield tests (three trials) in 2005 and in the Central Bread Wheat B test in BW423 was subsequently evaluated in the Central Bread Wheat Cooperative Test from 2007 to AREA OF ADAPTATION: Spring wheat growing regions of Western Canada. STRENGTHS: Fusarium Head Blight tolerance coupled with low DON values and intermediate yield and maturity. WEAKNESSES: Sprouting tolerance similar to Katepwa and CDC Teal. DESCRIPTION: BW423 is a standard height, awnless, hollow-stemmed wheat of intermediate yield potential and maturity. In three years of testing in the Central Bread Wheat Cooperative Test, BW423 was 13.9, 2.7 and 9.2% higher yielding than Katepwa, McKenzie and CDC Teal, respectively but 2.8 and 1.1% lower yielding than Unity VB and 5603HR, respectively (Table 1). BW423 was equal to CDC Teal for straw length and lodging score (Table 2). BW423 had average test and kernel weights within the range of the check cultivars. BW423 gave moderately resistant to resistant reactions to prevalent races of leaf rust and stem rust (Table 3). Reaction to loose smut was MR or I (Table 3). BW423 gave an intermediate reaction to bunt (Table 3). Leaf spotting disease levels were, on average, similar to the more resistant checks (Table 3). The FHB reactions for BW423 ranged from R to MS (Table 3). The average FHB Disease index for BW423 was 15% compared to 18, 23, 43, 16 and 21% for Katepwa, McKenzie, CDC Teal, Unity VB and 5603HR, respectively. DON levels from grain of BW423 produced in four FHB inoculated nurseries were consistently lower than 5603HR and Katepwa, the resistant checks (Table 3). BW423 averaged 3.6 ppm DON compared to 5.6, 6.3, 11.7, 5.7 and 5.7 ppm for Katepwa, McKenzie, CDC Teal, Unity VB and 5603HR, respectively. Thus DON levels of BW423 were, on average, 36% lower than the best check cultivars. BW423 was tested using the molecular markers diagnostic for Lr34. BW423 carries the R allele for the swm10 and CslvMS1 markers. BW423 was has undergone three years of quality evaluation (Table 4) and was deemed acceptable for end-use quality after the first two years of testing with a 5 Support: 6 Do not Object vote in Year 1 and a 1 Support: 17 DNO: 1 Object vote in Year 2.
