7 PILING HAMMERS (EMVs) EMVs reduce the cohesion of soils through vibrations which effectively fluidises the soil, making it easier and more cost efficient to install trench sheets and sheet piles. The weight of the piling hammer and the applied force are enough to drive the trench sheet/ sheet pile to the required depth quickly, quietly and efficiently. The davit comes in a modular system which can be broken down for ease of transport and installation. The universal base clamp allows the davit to easily connect to the majority of MGF s shoring range. 16 COUNTER BALANCE DAVIT SYSTEM The counter balance davit system consists of five individual lightweight components to enable easy transportation and installation. The counter balance davit and RGA4 fall arrest/rgr 7 man riding winches are connected to the free standing base. The anchoring system includes a weight rack that uses counter balance/ballast weights to provide support for a davit arm. No floor penetration is required and the complete system is modular and can be assembled in minutes providing a safe means of man riding, fall arrest and rescue from height. The counter balance davit system is the ideal system for multiple entry points to various confined spaces, or for when a permanent base plate cannot be mounted. CASE STUDY MAIN CLIENT: ENVIRONMENT AGENCY CONTRACTOR/CUSTOMER: VOLKER STEVIN DATE: 2005 As part of a Flood Alleviation Scheme in Hexham, Northumberland, MGF supported Volker Stevin with the

17 CASE STUDY MAIN CLIENT: ENVIRONMENT AGENCY CONTRACTOR/CUSTOMER: VOLKER STEVIN DATE: 2005 As part of a Flood Alleviation Scheme in Hexham, Northumberland, MGF supported Volker Stevin with the installation of a new culvert system where a thrust pit was required to pass underneath an existing heavy goods railway line. A 3.5m deep cofferdam, 23.0m by 7.5m was required approximately 3.0m away from the railway line. MGF designed a propped cantilever style cofferdam utilising 6.5m long 4A Sheet Piles toed 3.0m into the dense gravel with a frame at 0.5m below ground level. In order to withstand the high load whilst maintaining a large clear span with minimal deflection, MGF s Super Tank Brace with 120Te Hydraulic Powerpacks was used. The excavation was quick and easy to install as the sequence was un-complicated with no need for re-location of struts. The high bending capacity of Super Tank Brace meant that the clear opening required was easily achieved and only a single frame was required to withstand the loadings. Movement of the nearby railway was monitored closely throughout the excavation and defections were kept within allowable limits mgf.ltd.uk
