I have been seeing a lot of motorcycles on the road. Bill, Martin, and I took the TRC course at Canfield Fair Grounds. Robert and Sally did a great job and we had fun doing it. We left home Sunday May 27 and headed to Canfield. It started to rain so we stopped in East Liverpool and put our rain suits on. It was raining pretty good on the way up. By the time we reached Canfield it had stopped. Had a good breakfast and headed to the Fair grounds. In the class room we learned a lot as well as on the course it s self. It went pretty smooth. The Buckeye Rally is just around the corner and is coming fast. This is always a good time and a lot of fun. There is a lot to do in Mansfield. Hope to see you there. 3 Hello Everyone, another month has just flown by. It seems as though we were just getting in to May. That might be a sign that I am getting old. I did manage to get out and ride a few times not very far, it was still good to just get out on the bike. I hope everyone had a fun filled safe Memorial Day Holiday. Tom, Bill, and I took our TRC class on May 27. It was a good class, every time I go to the class I learn something new. So if you have never been to one I suggest you take time and go. 4 Rider Education Bill and Pat Stiles Hello Wingers It is finally spring but you would have a hard time proving it by the weather. Bod & Donna, Monte and Diane, Pat and I went to Spring Fling down in Pidgeon Forge last month. It was so windy on the way down that we had a hard time keeping the bike on our side of the road. Once we got there it was OK. The weather looked bad for Sunday s return so we left on Saturday. 82 and sunny when we left. Got to the first rest area in Kentucky for a short break and the sky started to turn black. We put our frog togs an and started up I Mins after we left the skies opened up and it poured. 61 miles south of Columbus on I-71 Bob s front universal joint broke. There we were at 10pm, pouring down rain and waiting for a tow truck. We finally made it to Columbus. Lucky for Bob and Donna she drove their jeep to Columbus. We left Columbus around 1:30 pm in the pouring down rain. I couldn t keep up with Monte as my bike wanted to hydro-plane really bad. I got off at Pickerington and we killed a couple of hours at the Cracker Barrell. We started out again, still raining cats and dogs. I could only drive MPH due to hydro-planning. I pulled into the rest area 6 miles east of Columbus on I-70. Had to go. I developed a bad Charlie horse in my right leg. It was so bad I couldn t move my knee, ankle or toes. Couldn t stand or sit. Bob decided to drive me bike from there to Toronto and I rod in the Jeep with Pat and Donna. To make a long story short it was a horrible trip. Don t think Pat and I will do that one for a while. " To Save Lives Through Quality, World Class Education" Group Riding: 17 Tips To Ensure Everybody Has A Great Day Share The engine purrs beneath you as a string of motorcycles snakes through the hills in front of you. With a quick look in the mirror, you see your buddy following close behind with a smile on his face that matches yours. The camaraderie forms because, at just this moment, you're all on the same page. That's what a group ride is all about. It's an opportunity to share the open road and wonderful scenery with other like-minded people. But like most motorcycle experiences, this one is best enjoyed by following a few simple guidelines that keep everyone safe. Here are a few from our friends at the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. 1. The first thing you want to do is organize the ride. This can be as informal as standing around in a parking lot, or as formal as a special meeting to hand out maps and cellphone numbers. 2. Remember that riding in a group does not mean you surrender any decisionmaking when it comes to your safety. Ride your own ride, and don't go any faster than you feel comfortable going.

When picking your route and the stops you'll make along it, consider the stamina of the group, the experience of all the riders, and the limits of the motorcycles in the group. Remember, these are your friends. If it's going to be a long ride, be sure to take a few breaks along the way. 4. You'll need to communicate while on the ride, so make sure everyone knows the signals you'll use. 5. When creating your formation, it's wise to have your experienced riders at the lead and running sweep. Consider positioning the less-experienced riders immediately behind the leader. This allows the front rider to adjust the pace if necessary. 6. Ideally, the sweep rider will have a cellphone to call for help if a motorcycle is disabled, or if there has been an accident. 7. If the goal of the ride is to keep the group together, the leader should only go at the pace of the least-experienced rider. 8. While riding, don't fixate on the motorcycle in front of you. Instead, remember your basic training. Look well through the turn to where you want to go. 9. If the group is riding faster than you are comfortable with, let the sweep rider know you're dropping out and ride at your own pace. So you may reach your destination a few seconds behind the others, but you will get there, and that's what's important. Keep in mind, it's all about fun. 10. All riders are also responsible for making sure their motorcycles are mechanically up to the task. Before you even meet up with the group, make sure you've got plenty of fuel in the tank, and that you've taken care of all those maintenance issues. Not sure what to check? Use T-CLOCS. You really don't want to be the reason for stopping the group for something mechanical you could have prevented. 11. If it's going to be a large group, consider establishing a buddy system among the riders, or divide the group into smaller five- or seven-rider packs. That way, if something goes wrong, you don't have 25 motorcycles sitting on the side of a busy highway. Also, smaller groups can more easily navigate through city streets.

" To Save Lives Through Quality, World Class Education" 12On the road, motorcyclists should have at least a 2-second cushion in front and behind them. If you want to keep the group tight, consider a staggered formation. Leave enough room per lane so each rider can maneuver side-to-side if need be. Avoid side-by-side formations as they shrink your space cushion. 13. Trikes and sidecars should stay in the center of the lane, and should be given the same amount of cushion as if they were a car. 14. As turns get sharper, or as visibility decreases, move back to a single file formation. You'll also want to use single file when entering or exiting a highway, at toll booths, or when roads have a rough or questionable surface. 15. At intersections where you've come to a stop, tighten the formation to side-by-side to take up less space. As the light turns green, or when traffic opens up, the bike on the left proceeds through the intersection first. 16. Remember we share the road with many other vehicles, and it's against the law to block an intersection. 17. When parking, try to get the group off the roadway as quickly as possible. If you can, arrange in advance to have pull-through parking at your destination, or at the very least, make sure there is ample parking for your size group

8 News Letter Editor Hello Everyone, At May s meeting Martin brought in pictures placed on motorcycle windshields of past and present members. Our dinner ride on the 19 th to Atwood lake was a good time had by those who attended. It s hard to believe that in Oct. of this year V-.2 will be 25 years old. And Tom has been Chapter Director all those years. It started in Buckeye Rally is in a few weeks. Hope to see as many of you there that can make it. This will be my first.
