1 Straight Away News March 2018 Big chance for smooth race courses Photo courtesy of Jim Miller A.H.R.F. from the Ernie Pereira collection Way back in 1949 Bonneville nationals was initiated by the SCTA to put on our first Bonneville event. Two dozen entrants showed up to find smooth salt 18 inches thick. The salt was so smooth and hard the track required no dragging. When the cars left the starting line, black rubber marks were left on the salt as if it were pavement. It is true the salt is very thin, in some areas near the 7 th and 8 th mile the salt is extremely thin, or even just dirt. We know that disturbing the salt crust as little as possible in the beginning of grooming courses is very important. It is critical, especially in these last few years to just smooth the salt instead of cutting it. Last year Ed Fenn came up with an idea to build a large float to smooth the deteriorating salt flats instead of using the conventional drag. Under the auspices and scrutiny of the BNI board of directors this 3500 lb. float is being built and will be tried when the salt conditions are just right. This one inch plate 8 foot by 12 foot will have a round nose and will be used to flatten the salt-mud flats. This is a gamble to see if this new approach will work. I believe it has a good chance. The SCTA /BNI Board of Directors has gone through considerable study, evaluation, and expense to try a new solution to secure a smooth race course. Keep your fingers crossed, wish us luck and pray for smooth hard salt. We have begun to organize our work force of hard working volunteers, who always give their best into making every year the finest Land Speed Racing event. This year SpeedWeek pre-entry fees will be $560.00, just $10.00 more than last year because of the anticipated course preparation.
