12 Arrowhead Chapter 83 HOGLines Do you know what the fuss over Torque and Horsepower is all about? I did a little reading and will try to explain in a layman s understandable terms. In general, did you know that torque expresses the amount of work an engine can produce? Torque is the force that moves our Harleys. More specifically, torque is the force that produces acceleration or the force that overcomes inertia from a stand still. Torque is the twisting force created by the turning crankshaft and finally to the rear wheel. The amount of torque and how low in the rpm range it develops determines how fast the bike will accelerate. Torque is a specific measurement that is easy to understand. Torque is measured in foot-pounds in the USA. One foot-pound (ft-lb) of torque is OTOS BY 1 RICH pound SPORSKI of force applied at a 1 foot radius. Take a 3 foot long bar with a socket on the end and apply 50 pounds of force. The torque on the bolt would be 150 ft-lbs of torque. Torque output on our Harleys is measured on a Dyno. Horsepower is not so easily understood. Horsepower is an arbitrary measurement. Horsepower is the effort to keep the bike moving. Therefore, horsepower determines speed. Horsepower is the ability to reach higher speeds and stay there. The term horsepower can mean many things and is measured differently around the world. James Watt, the guy who defined horsepower, wanted to figure out how much work a horse could do when removing coal from a coalmine. To make a long story short, he defined horsepower in terms of how much coal a horse could move in 1 minute (one horsepower = one horse moving 330 lbs of coal 100 ft or one horse moving 100 lbs of coal 330 ft). Of course pulleys were used to keep the horse s ability to do work reasonable basically to what the gearing in a transmission does for you in a Harley. As every mechanic knows, there must be a happy medium in gearing to give the engine both torque and rpm capability. An engine that is all torque with extremely low gearing, the rpm will suffer. Conversely, an engine that is all about high rpm will suffer poor low-end torque. Torque and horsepower are intertwined. One cannot live without the other. If you have the chart after getting your bike dyno d, you will notice that torque and horsepower are always equal at 5252 rpm. Notice on the dyno chart that above 5252 rpm, the torque will always be less than the horsepower. Below 5252 rpm, the torque will always be more than the horsepower. How is the constant 5252 rpm determined? There is a mathematical formula and a long explanation that explains why they are always equal at 5252 rpm but I won t get into that here. You re welcome. Maybe in a future Did You Know article. *This information has been summarized from an article in AI Magazine. Ron Hundley 12 Arrowhead 83 HOGLines November / December / January

14 4 no wait, 5 no, 7! bikes gathered on a beautiful fall morning for a ride to check out Saguaro National Park in Tucson. Some were joining us for the very first time. Erik Hames had ridden with us once before, but this was the first time his wife Kelly was able to join us. She was so excited to finally be riding with us! Their babysitter had arrived late, and they had decided they would try to catch up to us if we were gone by the time they got to the Chevron meeting place. Also joining us for the first time was Dan Krohta. One bike had communication issues between the fob and security system but was eventually coaxed into starting, thanks to determination, an owner s manual, smart phones, and the combined efforts of everyone there. A little behind schedule but finally on the road, 7 bikes and 11 people headed east towards our first stop in Superior. Unfortunately, only 5 bikes pulled into the rest area. One bike had mechanical issues and had to pull over just after Florence Junction. Wouldn t you know it, it was Erik s bike. They were unable to complete the ride. We never even got a picture of them with the group, and now they were out. Don (rear road captain) and Susan Thompson stayed behind to help Erik and Kelly. The rest of us waited for a while at the rest stop in Superior. After hearing that there was finally a vehicle on the way to retrieve them and their bike, we all hit the road again. Of course, Don and Susan were now behind the group. We rode south out of Superior past two monster pit mines and through some gorgeous scenery on gently twisting roads. After a short stop for gas in Winkleman, we were on our way again. Next stop was lunch at a Chili s restaurant in Oro Valley, just north of Tucson. Once there we were in touch with Don, and directions were given on how to find us. The first group was well into their lunches by the time Don and Susan finally joined us. Our server was very much in tune with us, making sure we all had plenty to drink, keeping our drinks refreshed, and making sure everyone was taken care of. Waiting for Don and Susan to finish their lunches provided the rest of us an opportunity to chat. As a group, we seem to have a knack for incorporating food and chat into our rides! After lunch we skirted the northern edge of Tucson to the western section of Saguaro National Park. After a where the heck are you taking us ride through several neighborhoods, both fancy and not, we crested a hill to find a sea of saguaros before us. It truly was a spectacular view. And another nice curvy road. Fortunately the speed limit was low so the riders were able to enjoy some of the scenery too, not just those of us in the passenger seats. We rode through the park for a while and finally arrived at the Visitor Center. There was a nice shaded patio with spectacular views of saguaros and all the other plant life. This side of the park is quite different from the eastern section. I think many of us were surprised by not only the saguaro forest but also by how much vegetation there was in general. Definitely not the southwestern desert I was expecting! After photos and enough looking around, everyone wound up inside the Visitor Center. The movie started while we were in there so we all went in to watch. Back outside after the movie, people found shady spots to sit. It had already been a long day at this point and no one wanted to move. Several joking comments were made about no one wanting to be the first to get up. Finally someone noticed that clouds had moved in. Under the blissful shade provided by the clouds, we mounted up for the ride home. One more stop for gas a few miles north of the park and we were on our way. Dan, Doug, Don, Ron, Jon, and John (with Melanie, Susan and Lynn, but the guys names sounded so much better together) rode together as a group until we hit the southern edge of the Valley and then everyone went their separate ways. Good friends, great scenery, good food, and finally decent weather a great day! PHOTOS AND STORY BY LYNN RUSKIN n Arrowhead 83 HOGLines November / December / January
