2 Hello Chapter M Jun 2018 Eight of our chapter members went on our annual ride to Neuhaus Honda in Litchfield Il. For a change we heard that the weather was hot and dry. Wouldn t you know it we had to be in Florida where it was hot and wet. Then the group headed to St Louis to watch a baseball game and the Cardinals even won, how does it get any better than that, but this was a no ice cream ride. May 26 th Chapter M had 7 bikes that went on The Reenactment ride. First, they went to Vincennes to paying respects to Darrel then they attended the Reenactment program. We were told even though it didn t last long it was interesting. Then it was off to Twin Rivers Restaurant. It seems that food is always involved in our rides. We were told this was a no ice cream ride too. On June 9 th, we had a good ride lead by Jerry Boehman. We left Washington with 9 bikes 18 people. We were joined by two couples that were new to Chapter M, Allen and Bonnie Betz and Alvin and Brenda Chestnut. It is always nice to have new faces join us. We headed to Vincennes to stop at Gloria s auction, and then headed for New Harmony. I had something that I haven t had in years, a fried German begonia sandwich. Then we headed to Evansville to eat at the Mission BBQ restaurant ran by our military veterans. After we ate, someone looked at the weather on their phone and the decision was made to step up the pace and get on the road before the storm hit. We made it in dry but after getting home I realized that we hadn t stopped for ice cream anywhere. So now I am wondering is that even legal, having a group of Goldwing s and not stopping for ice cream and does that really constitute a ride at all. I see a definite trend going here, evidently, we all decided to go on a diet at the same time or maybe we need to plan our rides better so we all get ICE CREAM. 3 Jun 2018 June Newsletter Indiana GWRRA Directors cut Late Here we are after a busy month. SWWU the second week of May in Evansville. Mother s Day on the tail end of this event. Niehaus and several other activities on the 3rd week. Memorial Day weekend always a big event in Indiana. A week off, then Missouri has their rally in Branson. Ohio has their rally coming up a week later. Plenty to do in and out of the State of Indiana. I spent one week cleaning the cobwebs out of my as it has not had a lot of action this year. I did make some people laugh though as I was trying to get my trailer ready to go. Of course, I hooked it up and the lights wouldn t work. Checked everything on the bike and in the trailer. So, I called Grumpy and said, I needed to order a part, and asked if he could give my lights a once over. Yep, I hooked it up, rode to Grumpy s and wouldn t you know it by the time I got there, they were working like a charm. Everyone got a chuckle and off I went ready to go to Missouri. The reason I put this I here is we all plan for the trip planning the destination and the route. Making the reservations looking at the schedule to see what we want to do there. The real work is preparing yourself for the trip physically and mentally. Getting the bike and trailer, if you pull one, ready should never be a last-minute push or a second thought. I know my Goldwing has never let me down, but I have been in that last-minute situation and had to get lucky to take her on the ride. Some people say I am a little paranoid and maybe a little fussy, but those surprise breakdowns are expensive and aggravating. Knock on wood I haven t experienced one of those first hand yet. The Missouri rally was fun and there were plenty of things to do. I visited the vendors and spent the money I won. I upgraded some lights. I now have a brighter tail. There were many attending from Indiana and they announce they had 19 states attending. The theme was It s hot out here. Everyone came back from the rides warm and satisfied. So please be careful this summer as it is shaping up to be a hot one. I have some responses from the chapters about their favorite eating places. I am putting this together for Howard. I also have the lists from some chapters for their summer plans and Howard will be getting those also. We also need to update our meeting times calendar as many of these have changed. So, if you have changed your meeting time please forward this to Howard so he can update the calendar. This will be a rebuild as the original calendar was built on some out of date software. Gary and Carol started the meeting with The Pledge of Allegiance. 2. Debbie Cole offered the opening prayer. 3. Gary and Carol introduced the Couples and Individuals of the Year and welcomed our guests. 4. Pat and Gerta McKee, Indiana SW Assistant District Directors, installed Gary and Carol Meyerholtz as the new Chapter Directors and Ken and Marilyn as the new Chapter MEC s. Richard Watkins will remain as the Assistant Chapter Director. 5. Pat and Gerta McKee talked about the upcoming Spring Wing Warm Up at Evansville, IN on May 11 and 12. Several members have registered to attend and they will be 5 members bring their campers. 6. We are still looking for someone to take over the Chapter Newsletter. If you re interested see Carol or Marilyn for more details. 7. Future events coming up are the SWWU at Evansville May and Niehaus Honda open house May The ride committee will be meeting soon to plan the chapter ride schedule for this summer. 8. Howard gave the safety report on the hazards of farm machinery on the roads during the spring planting season. Machinery has a legal right to use the roadway so long as they display a slow moving vehicle emblem. Use caution when approaching hills or meeting oncoming machinery. Anticipate which direction the machinery might turn before attempting to pass. 9. The Indian District summer challenge will be a 92 County Challenge. The challenge will be to ride to as many counties as possible over the summer and photograph your bike at each landmark on the list. The rules, list of landmarks and more information are further along in this newsletter. The state website indianaonwings.org will also have a list of favorite places to eat. 10. Debbie Cole is our new Fun Director. She had everyone introduce themselves but their middle name and their first job. Seems we have a lot of stable cleaners in the group and some of them are still spreading manure. The Guess How Many winner was Norman Cole.

5 Howard Gingerich - Chapter M Safety Educator ARTICLE UPDATE: SAFETY ALERT! We have received a number of questions about the October 2013 Wing World Trike Tracks article specifically on page 53. The author who is not a Rider Educator, not a GWRRA Trike Riding Course Instructor, and not a participant in the Rider Ed Program claims that trikes can swerve at highway speeds while simultaneously braking. Hard braking mixed with a yank on the handlebars can spell disaster on a two-wheeler. A rider can brake hard or swerve, but not at the same time. Trikes are different. Because you can put force into a turn without leaning the bike, a trike is much more capable of maneuvering around sudden road danger. Do not assume that the author intended the reader to believe that a Trike Rider could simultaneously apply hard braking and yank the handlebars in a swerve at highway speeds. If you try this your life will be in grave danger! It is NOT safe to swerve and brake at the same time. For those who believe a trike won t roll over, think about the national campaigns warning of SUVs doing so in the past. They were heavier and had a wider wheel base than a trike. We have seen it happen in one of our classes in 2013 when a student failed to follow their training and braked while swerving at low parking lot speeds (~25 mph). A swerve is a measure taken when other defensive techniques and options have failed. A swerve is NOT a turn. Please DO NOT attempt applying brakes during a swerve. You can apply brakes immediately before or after a swerve. Just separate them. We teach in our GWRRA classroom portion of the Trike Rider Course (TRC), as well as all of our other Riding Courses, that you should Never swerve and brake at the same time!. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation and Evergreen Safety Council also teach trike training with similar advice. If all of the available traction (there are many dynamic factors involved) is being used to prevent the vehicle s tires from sliding sideways in the swerve, any application of the brakes during this swerve could exceed the total traction available and the tires could lose their grip. The result could be as forgiving as a slide, and as catastrophic as a high side accident where the trike ejects the rider (and co-rider) as it rolls over. The likelihood increases if the factors are greater: higher speed, greater amount and speed of the swerve, poor road conditions, less experience and training for the rider, solid axle vs. independent suspension, ride height (conversion dependent center of gravity), loading, etc. For those who may have been successful doing this in the past, recognize you were not at the traction limit in your swerve when you applied some braking. It will not be successful with a hard swerve and hard braking. The laws of physics involved do not discriminate based on luck, experience, or the number of accident-free miles ridden. Understanding the limits of the Trike, the environment and the Rider and staying within them is the key to reducing the inherent risk involved in our chosen pastime. Take a Riding Course to learn about the risks and practice avoiding them under the watchful eyes of a trained instructor in a controlled environment in the near future!
