3 Announcements & Tid Bits July 6-8, Washington State Kettle Falls, WA July 17-20, UMCI Myers Flat, CA Seattle/Puget Sound Area Lunch Rides Cover Photo Johnny Fisher of Everett WA Lets start at the beginning, like fairly young. Bicycle, motor bike, Cushman motor scooter and my first Harley Hydra Glide in June I bought the Harley brand new in Spokane. In December that year the U.S. Navy invited me to join them for the next four years. I was stationed in Bangor, WA for two years. I rode the Harley back and forth to Spokane. This was long before the Freeway I-90. Washington Hwy 10, a two lane road where some interesting riding took place, like topping a rise in the middle of the night and counting four headlights coming at me. Hit the ditch man, like fast. Good machine, we both lived through it. There were several more incidents that were interesting, but won t mention. In late 1951, the weather said get a car, so I turned the Harley in for a 1948 Kaiser. One trip to Spokane took 24 hours over Snoqualmie pass. 3

4 Cover Photo, continued... Out of the Navy in 1954, I married my wife Mary in Bike riding was out of the question til 1975, when I purchased a BSA-A7. Bad bike! Sold it and bought a Suzuki 750 in Met Ned Akerman in 1982 and he talked me into joining the Retreads which became UMCI in a number of states. Then came my last Harley, a new 1987 Electra Glide (still in my garage). In 1996 I bought a 1995 Honda Goldwing. Mary and I traveled to many a rally on it. After 104,000 miles it was time upgrade to a new 2007 Goldwing which I still have. Then thinking my legs were not as strong as they used to be, I found a 2012 Honda Trike for sale on the internet. So in 2014 I flew to Tennessee, made the deal, climbed aboard and 3,332 miles later, I was back in Everett. Rained most of the way. So with three motorcycles in my garage where does my new Toyota Highlander set? In the driveway, of course! I'm over the hill and picking up speed. Johnny F. 4

After this summer and for next couple of years I plan on doing a lot of traveling around the USA and Canada. So I m looking for someone to replace me. If you re interested please call, text, or me. 6 Columbia Basin News Hi everyone from the Columbia Basin group hope this note finds all of you in great health and riding a lot. I rode about 100 miles last Saturday, the hip hurt pretty well but hoping it keeps improving. We had our regular meeting at Bob s on Sunday had a pretty good turnout for breakfast, but darn there were no riders. We did have Jan and Herb s grandson stop by and he rode so that counts. Kevi and I told the group that we went to Kamia to see the entire group they had 75 registered at the time we were there. Pretty good turnout considering the rain they had. You can certainly tell that the group is getting older or wiser there were more Trikes and Can Am s in the group but as long as everyone is still riding that is what counts. Our breakfast meeting saw about 15 for breakfast we discussed the upcoming State rally as well as the International rally. So far as I could see the attendance was going to be slim. I discussed how I felt that it was time to focus on the members that we now have and get them active first before we can attract new members and I think that is going to be the hard part but it can be done. I have never belonged to any group that you can connect so deeply with other people and agree on one thing and that is the joy of riding motorcycles. Not to count the long lasting friend ships that you develop and look forward to seeing he or she at a rally. My good friends through this club are Richard and Dianne from Idaho and while at the Idaho rally he was not there because of health reasons. Get better soon Richard my and Kevi s prayers are with you. Food Friendship and fun that is what this club is all about please ride safe and we will hope to see you at the Washington State Rally in Kettle Falls should be lots of fun. 8 How Do Motorcycles Lean So Far Without Tipping Over? by Rhett Allain Riding a motorcycle is just like riding a bike except it s much faster oh, and you don t have to pedal. In both cases, the two wheeled vehicle can lean significantly while taking a turn. Why? Two reasons: fake forces and torque. Fake Forces In your introductory physics course, one of the biggest ideas is that a force changes the motion of an object. One way to mathematically write this is with Newton s second law: If a net force acts on an object, it accelerates. If you hold a ball in front of you and let go, only one force acts on it the gravitational force. The ball has an acceleration in the same direction as the gravitational force so that it starts speeding up in the downward direction and falls straight down. Now for a quick example. Suppose I hang a pair of fuzzy dice from the rear view mirror of my car. Now I accelerate the car, and the dice swing back. Don t try to pretend you don t have fuzzy dice hanging in your car. I know you do. OK, let s say it s a ball instead. But why does the ball (fuzzy dice) swing back? If you looked at the forces on the ball, you have gravity pulling down and the tension in the string pulling both up and forward. If the ball is at rest, what force pushes it back to balance the horizontal component of the tension? The answer: nothing. There is not a force pushing the ball back because the ball is accelerating forward. 8

9 How Do Motorcycles Lean So Far Without Tipping Over?, continued... Here is the key point: Newton s second law really only works in a non-accelerating reference frame. When a human is in an accelerating car, we want Newton s law to work like always. The only way to fix this problem is to add a fake force, like this. This fake force is in the opposite direction as the acceleration of the car. It is this fake force that pushes the ball back in the accelerating reference frame and this fake force would have a value of: Most introductory physics courses don t cover fake forces. Why not? Because students already have some difficulty identifying the forces on an object. Add in fake forces and it just gets crazy. This means that for all of the situations in an intro physics class, an object will be observed from an inertial reference frame (which means non-accelerating). What about a motorcycle turning in a circle? Since the velocity vector of the motorcycle is changing, it has an acceleration (even if it is at a constant speed). This means that a fake force pushes the rider in the opposite direction of the acceleration. 9

The acceleration for an object moving in a circle points towards the center of the circle and has a magnitude of: Where r is the radius of the circle and v is the speed of the motorcycle. Of course, you can probably guess that we have a special name for this fake force we call it the centrifugal force which literally means center fleeing force. Don t confuse this with centripetal force which is the force that causes an object to move in a circle. Torque When a car or motorcycle takes a turn, some external force pushes on the vehicle in the direction of the center of the circle. This force is almost always the friction force between the tires and the road. This frictional force will be important when looking at a turning motorcycle. Now we can get to the leaning motorcycle. Suppose that I have a motorcycle that is going around a curve and NOT leaning. Since the motorcycle is turning, it is accelerating towards the center of the circle. It turns out that this is easiest to explore in the accelerating frame of the rider such that there will be a fake force pushing away from the center of the circle. Here is a front view of the motorcycle along with the forces acting on it. The motorcycle is turning to the left (as seen from the viewer). 10

If you push at the top and bottom of the pencil, the pencil turns. Just as a force can change the velocity of an object, the torque can change the angular velocity.

Put a pencil flat on the table and then push with two fingers in opposite directions on the pencil. If these two forces are at the same location on the pencil, the pencil remains stationary. If you push at the top and bottom of the pencil, the pencil turns. Just as a force can change the velocity of an object, the torque can change the angular velocity. With zero torque, you would have no change in angular motion. The torque from a force depends on the magnitude of the force, the distance from the location of the force to some rotation point and the angle the force is applied. If you wanted to write this as an equation, it would be: Where θ is the angle between F and r. Technically, torque is a vector, but let s just leave it like this for now. Going back to the diagram of the non-leaning and turning motorcycle, you can see the problem. Just like the pencil, the friction force and the fake force are not at the same location. If you don t lean, the net torque is not zero and you would fall over. In a motorcycle race, this would be a bad thing. What changes if you the motorcycle leans? Here is the same motorcycle, but now leaning. 11

Let s look at the torque as calculated about the point where the wheel touches the ground. The frictional force and the normal force (from the ground pushing up) have zero torque since they are both applied at the point that torque is calculated. That leaves just the torque from the fake force and the torque from the gravitational force. They are in opposite directions and so they can cancel. In the non -leaning bike, the gravitational force was pushing right through the torque point so that it produced a zero torque and could not cancel the torque from the fake force. In short, leaning the bike allows there to be a gravitational torque to balance the torque from the fake force. Leaning prevents you from falling over. I know that seems strange, but it s true. Why Doesn t a Turning Car Lean? Well, a turning car does actually lean. However, it doesn t have to. Here is a force diagram that is just like the turning motorcycle except that I have replaced it with a car. Cars have 4 wheels (usually). If I take the right front wheel (seen on the left in the diagram) as the point to calculate the torque, the gravitational force does indeed have a non-zero torque since the center of gravity is not directly above the point of the tire. Also, the normal force from the other tire would also exert a non-zero torque. With this many forces, it s easy to see that you could have a net torque of zero. Cars don t have to lean to turn but motorcycles do. 12

17 We Went for a Ride On Wednesday June 14th we were meeting Rollie Rohrer in Pateros at 10:00 am. There had been strong winds for last couple of days. Rain was in the forecast for tomorrow. Today seemed like a good day to check out a couple of camp grounds. We rode into the gas station to meet Rollie with a minute to spare. Rollie was there waiting for us with his new ride. Rollie had gone to the Tri Cities the Sunday before and bought a triked Honda VTX It is a good looking trike and Rollie seems happy with it's performance. Our plan for the day was to head west on Hwy 20 past Winthrop. There are two camp grounds there we are going to look at. First one is called Early Winters. Our second stop would be at a camp ground called Klipchuck. Both are Federal forest camp grounds. We saddled up and headed west out of Pateros on Hwy 20. When we got to Twisp we stopped at Blue Star Coffee Roasters for a cup of coffee. If you like coffee Blue Star has great coffee. We continued west through Winthrop. Jan, Rollie and I had agreed to a stop at the Mazama store. Jan and I had been by Mazama a number of times but never have stopped there. We found the store is a tourist trap. Lots of people there for a week day. We can say we have been there now. It was Dwayne Woods and Ron Mattox had told us about these camp grounds so we decided to come see for ourselves. Not far from Mazama was the first camp ground Early Winters. The camp ground is on both sides of the Hwy. There are not many sites but there were not many campers either. They have vault toilets that were clean and potable water in the summer. After looking on both sides of the Hwy we liked the South side better. It is a nice little camp ground. Cost is $8 per site. If you have your Golden pass it is half price. Jan and I had been here with Dennis and Bernice Miles just a couple of weeks ago. It was during the Twisp camp out and we had gone for a ride. Our next stop was Klipchuck campground. This campground was a little over a mile off the Hwy. I like that since you don't have the traffic going by. It looks like a nicer campground than Early Winters. There are more sites to choose from. Amenities are the same. Vault toilets and potable water. We like this campground and plan on returning some time to do some camping. Cost here is $12 per site. With a Golden Pass it would be $6. 17

We just did what came natural and pulled in. I am new to retirement and I like this being able to go places during the week when everyone else is at work. We rode back to Pateros and said our goodbyes to Rollie Then home to Cashmere.
