2 LEADER Train Handling and Energy Management System The business case is straightforward. Fuel costs money and LEADER reduces fuel consumption by 6% to 17%. As of June 2014, LEADER has been deployed on more than 4,000 locomotives worldwide on 12 railroads and saves more than $110 million dollars in fuel costs annually. The number of locomotive deployments grows larger each and every year and the percentage of fuel saved by these customers is improving as well. Fact 1 Every railroad is different. LEADER train handling technology contains unique information about the consist (weight, length, car types and power), the track profile (curves, grades, speed limits and other data), GPS, and sophisticated algorithms that make real-time decisions on how best to operate the train. LEADER software is on-board the train responding in real-time to variables ranging from the condition of the locomotive to track-side weather conditions in order to optimize fuel and minimize in-train forces. How much fuel is saved, how much run-in and run-out damage to draft gear is avoided, varies based on topography, weather, customer demands, change orders, equipment health, crew performance, rules of the road and available power.

Starting with the best train-handling practices already in place at the railroad, LEADER improves the effectiveness of those practices through a more complete understanding of train behavior. This might range from a decision to back off the throttle five percent before the crest of a hill to save fuel by coasting rather than braking down the other side, or a look ahead calculation alerting an engineer that gravitational forces threaten to create a dangerous situation a few miles down the track. The result is increased fuel economy, reduced in-train forces and better schedule performance. LEADER Customers...and a cleaner world.
4 More information results in better train handling, more time allows the locomotive engineer s focus to shift from train operation to safety. Fact 3 Every crew needs time to optimize performance. LEADER technology improves crew performance by providing more information and more time. More information results in better train handling, more time allows the locomotive engineer s focus to shift from train operation to safety. In 2006, LEADER Driver Assist displays prompts for optimal throttle and dynamic brake and the engineer monitors the screen and moves the controls to the correct position. Fuel savings ranging from 6-8% are typical. In 2014, LEADER Auto Control automatically operates throttle and dynamic brake. Crew compliance increases, train operation is more precise and damage to draft gear is further reduced. Fuel savings typically improve another 2-3%.
5 ADP works in much the same way to reduce draft force and save fuel on curves by applying more power where it is needed. Superior Train Handling LEADER performs high-fidelity on-board simulations that predict train performance several miles ahead and evaluates multiple train operating strategies. As new variables enter the equation, LEADER scores each strategy in real-time according to the railroad s operating goals and selects the strategy that is the best match for increased fuel economy, reduced dynamic and static in-train forces, and on-schedule performance. LEADER s capability to model and prompt for Asynchronous Distributed Power (ADP) provides a material improvement in fuel savings over train handling in both hilly and flat terrain. There are two reasons for this: 1) ADP puts power where it s needed. As a train crests a hill, the force of gravity pulls on the back end while it pushes the front end forward. ADP allows the front of the train to use gravity to its full advantage, while supplying the power to the rear cars to climb the hill. Power to climb Reduce in-train forces Throttle back & save fuel ADP works in much the same way to reduce draft force and save fuel on curves by applying more power where it is needed. 2) ADP chooses to use the most efficient power first. When a train is on flat ground less power is needed, and fuel consumption is reduced by temporarily idling unneeded locomotives. Loco 3: Idle Loco 2: Notch 6 Loco 1: Idle
6 In the future, LEADER will be part of PTC display. When PTC comes online, LEADER will provide distributed power functionality with a highly integrated PTC / LEADER solution. LEADER users will not need to buy new hardware to enjoy the benefits of LEADER and PTC, merely upgrade to full PTC capability. LEADER Auto Pilot will operate under all of the safety umbrellas currently being developed PTC, CNTC or ATO providing full train control including air brakes. Auto Pilot will improve pacing increasing network efficiency, saving even more fuel by avoiding hurry up and wait events and shifting the locomotive engineer s focus from train operation to safety.
