5 Executive Summary Here, the outcome of the ARTRAC project workpackage WP 7 Test and Validation dealing with the vehicle presentation is summarized. The result of ARTRAC has been presented as well as demonstrated to the public during a public event in Ehra/ Germany on 26 th September In this Deliverable D7.3 the presentation of the two demonstrator cars of CRF and VW is described. Furthermore an impression of the measurement vehicle of VTT is provided. Page 5

7 1 Introduction This document provides an overview about public demonstrations as well as public presentations of demonstrator vehicles within this project. The public demonstrations during the ARTRAC Final Event are included. The Deliverable D7.3 covers the two ARTRAC demonstrator vehicles and one measurement vehicle: Demonstrator of Centro Ricerche Fiat (CRF): VRU safety system installed in Fiat 500L (refer chapter 2) Demonstrator of Volkswagen (VW): VRU safety system installed in VW Golf GTI (refer chapter 3) Measurement vehicle of Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT): Road surface condition estimation mounted on a measurement vehicle (Škoda Octavia) (refer chapter 4) The Figure 1-1 shows the two demonstrator vehicles together with entire research team of ARTRAC during Final Event in Ehra. 8 2 Demonstrations of CRF Demonstrator Vehicle The ARTRAC public final event was held on 26th September It took place at Volkswagen proving ground in Ehra/ Germany. In Figure 2-1 the demonstrator of Centro Ricerche Fiat is shown when presented to the public. Page 8

10 3 Demonstrations of VW Demonstrator Vehicle The Volkswagen demonstrator vehicle just after integration of ARTRAC 24 GHz radar sensor is shown in Figure 3-1. Figure 3-1: Demonstrator vehicle Golf GTI equipped with ARTRAC radar ready for being tested. Page 10

11 The demonstrator has been presented at different occasions to the public. Firstly, the demonstrator vehicle was shown to the public was in June 2013 in Magdeburg/ Germany. The Otto-von-Guericke-University of Magdeburg offered the possibility to present the ARTRAC Golf GTI to the scientific and technical personnel, professors, students. 12 Secondly, the International Radar Symposium 2013 in Dresden/ Germany offered a platform to communicate the idea, concept and status of ARTRAC to approximately 300 international radar experts who met there. The demonstrator was presented inside of the conference hotel. This fact played an important role. Therefore, the vehicle was seen by many conference participants. 13 A further presentation of the VW ARTRAC Golf has been conducted during 1 st ARTRAC public workshop in Hamburg/ Germany (refer Figure 3-4). This workshop was hosted by partner TUTECH. 14 In March 2014 the 2 nd public workshop of ARTRAC took place again in Hamburg/ Germany. The demonstrator vehicle of VW was presented in front of the meeting building. Its sensor equipment and actuation concept has been explained in detail to the workshop participants (refer Figure 3-5). 15 During 9th April 2014 a delegation of high politicians from Yemen was visiting the University of Magdeburg. It was great pleasure for ARTRAC being invited to that meeting. The demonstrator vehicle was presented in detail to this delegation and technical challenges were highlighted. The following Figure 3-6 shows the Governing Mayor of Sanaa/ Yemen, the Lord Mayor of Provice Dahmar/ Yemen, the Ambassador of Republic Yemen, the Culture and Military Attachee of Governmental Department of Yemen, a Professor of University of Magdeburg in front of the demonstrator. A further demonstration of the Golf demonstrator was conducted on 14 th April at Ostfalia University of Applied Science in Wolfenbüttel/ Germany. A group of Bachelor students of Computer Science was introduced into the technical requirements and solutions for improving active pedestrian safety. 16 The ARTRAC Final Event was held on 26th September It took place at Volkswagen proving ground in Ehra/ Germany. In Figure 3-8 the demonstrator is shown in action during the Final Event. Page 16

18 4 Demonstrations of VTT Road Surface Estimation Measurement Vehicle VTT used a Škoda Octavia as a measurement vehicle for road surface estimation tests. In Figure 4-1 the installation of the radar is shown. In this installation the sensors is rearwards-looking instead of forward-looking what the planned mounting position for driver assistance systems addressed would be. Tests were conducted with rearwardslooking radar because of the size of the measurement equipment to avoid blockings of test-driver s view. Figure 4-1: Road surface estimation radar mounted on Škoda Octavia. For comparison reasons a RCM411 road condition monitor is installed on the measurement vehicle in addition (see Figure 4-2). 20 5 Conclusions This document summarises the conducted presentation of all three demonstrator vehicles within ARTRAC. All demonstrators have been presented to the public. The demonstrators of CRF and VW were presented in dedicated test scenarios for VRU protection. The overall sensing approach in combination with the actuation delivered promising results. The demonstrator of VTT was presented in dedicated test scenarios for road surface condition estimation. The overall sensing approach is still an interesting research activity what should be continued in further research projects. Page 20
