1 COST Office Avenue Louise 149, bte 12 B-1150 Brussels, Belgium Tel: Fax: Website: COST Action HPSTM (High Performance Energy Storage for Mobile and Stationary Applications) Training School in co-operation with the COST Actions of MNPS Domain: P19, 541, with the TUD Domain as well as with industrial partners The Training School has been organised by the COST Action 542 in cooperation with the: - COST Actions of MNPS Domain: o P19 Multiscale Modelling of Materials o 541 Semi-solid Processing of Steels - TUD Domain and - industrial partners of the COST Action 542 (Siemens, Romanian State Railways) and Universities and research institutes from Romania, Finland, United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Poland, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Lithuania, Latvia, Germany and Greece. The goals of the Training School were: - to provide dissemination of Actions activities regarding new: o trends in the R&D on supercapacitor and fuel cell technologies and improved materials o supercapacitor and fuel cell application in the transportation and energy technique o to provide a long life image about supercapacitors & fuel cell and consequences to the fields of application - to provide information on approaches, used in the adjoining COST Actions as well in the TUD Domain and to activate the implementation of the tools and findings from one Action in another and herewith to redound to the emergence of a fresh ideas and new cooperation projects, based on an interdisciplinary approach - to demonstrate advantages of the Pan-European approach as a suitable way of efficient improvement of high requested technologies and their application - to demonstrate the necessity to implement a multidisciplinary approach to assure the evolution of the emerging technology to the winning technology - to illustrate to the ESR s the supply chain : improved materials innovative energy storage devices high performance energy

2 storage systems low carbon strategy and herewith the advantages of a multidisciplinary approach - to close the circle of research between the fundamental side nano-materials and devices such as supercapacitors and fuel cells and challenging of applicative side (application fields of these devices) renewable integration in microgrids, electric vehicles and heavy transportation systems, mechatronic applications etc. - to contribute to the anchoring of a multidisciplinary approach in the curriculum of European universities - and last but not least to strengthen the networking between ESR from different parts of Europe based on multidisciplinary approach. The Training School took place in Poiana Brasov (Romania) on May, 20 th May, 23 th, ESR`s from 16 countries took part in the Training School, more than 20% of them are female. The cooperation of colleagues from various COST Actions mainly contributed to this success. This Training School has encouraged new impulses to the intensification of the multidisciplinary cooperation. Course of the Training School: First day, COST Action 542 Training School started on May, 20 th at 8:30 am with the registration : welcome by the host Institution, Transylvania University of Brasov (Prof. Paul Borza and the dean of Electrical Engineering and Computing Science Faculty Prof. Aurel Sorin Moraru). 10:10: introduction to the Training School by Prof. Paul Borza (Vice Chair of the COST Action 542, coordinator and local organiser of the Training School). The introduction was followed by short self-presentation of all participants of the Training School (ESR`s and lecturers).

5 10:30: Presentation of the COST Organization, of the COST Action 542: COST organisation, goals and activities of the COST Action 542, supercapacitor technology (state of the art of supercapacitor technology, limits and barriers, prospective development, possible spectrum of applications) Dalik Sojref. Figure 6 Lecture during the Training School The presentation was followed by a short coffee break and at 11:15 started the first session. In this session Liudas Pranevecius presented the lecture: Fuel Cells: basics, technology and application. He had an interesting presentation about the fuel cells technologies and wide spectrum of their applications. Matti Alatalo (Cost Action P19) hold a lecture on Multiscale modelling of materials paying special attention for the application of multiscale modelling relating to the nano-stuctured materials. At 12:30 pm started the session focused on Advanced materials for energy storage devices in which Grzegorz Lota presented the lecture Various activated carbons, nitrogenated carbons. The presentation was focused on last research programs related the symmetric and a-symmetric cells including also a lot of information related to the materials, technologies and testing procedures. The mentioned presentations were followed by lunch at Piatra Mare Hotel At 5:15 pm all the participants were transferred in Brasov for a special and unique organ concert at Black Church. 6 After the concert the participants were transferred back to Piatra Mare Hotel for welcome dinner. Second day, The second day started with the session focused on Energy Storage in the Transportation Applications. In this session Elena Helerea presented the lecture Advanced materials for energy storage. Prof. Radu Andrei by his representative and Paul Borza presented the lecture Supercapacitors based engine starting and energy management system some examples : applications of the supercapacitors and also the importance of the supercapacitors technologies in the transportation field. Michael Modigel (COST Action 541) presented a lecture on Rheology: basics of rheology, rheological behaviour of high concentrated suspensions. Prof. Modigel described approaches to the investigation of rheological behaviour of complicated systems as a tool for the description of the structural changes in such systems; the lecture has been followed by extensive discussion on the possible application of rheological approach in conjunction with the necessity to improve the processing of electrode materials for supercapacitors. Before lunch Elena Helerea and Addeatif Miraoui have presented the lecture about Evaluation of supercapacitors effect in hybrid energy systems for automotives. Afterwards Carmen Lungoci has introduced the models of hybrid automotive and adequate supercapacitors solutions. At 1:30 pm after the lunch at Piatra Mare Hotel in Poiana Brasov the participants of the Training School have visited the depot of locomotives of the State Romanian Railways (demonstration of the prototype of the supercapacitor based engine starting system of a diesel-hydraulic locomotive). The demonstrations were a real success. At 3:30 pm the participants were transferred from the depot of locomotives to Brasov and have had free time to visit Brasov city until 7:30 pm when the participants were transferred back to Piatra Mare Hotel for dinner. At 8:30 pm started a traditional Romanian folklore party Sura Dacilor restaurant, which ended at 1 am. During the dinner a core of participants have discussed about the possibilities and practical actions required in order to develop a horizontal cooperation program between different directions of the COST organization. Main topic of discussions: role of hybrid energy storage systems. The combined energy sources as highly required solutions in order to obtain a better compromise between energy & power density, costs, capability to control and implement optimal system solutions. This idea to work on hybrid energy storage systems solutions has been supported by the participants and represents one of the most interesting conclusions of the training school. Third day, The third day started with the presentation of Sergey Chizhevskiy (ECOND, Russia): Experiences on manufacturing and application of stacked supercapacitors. Sergey Chizhevskiy presented an exhaustive image about symmetrical aqueous stacked supercapacitors and their benefits. The presentation was followed by the demonstration of supercapacitor cells. A lot of discussions, questions and answers were related to this presentation.

7 Juliusz Hildebrandt & Marcin Żuławnik (Wroclaw Branch of IEL, Poland) presented Energy Storage System for Hybrid Supply and Energy Saving in Trolleybuses. They underlined the system solution adopted for trolleybuses using batteries and supercapacitors. They presented also a video which illustrated a good functioning of the prototype. Dr. Coquery (INRETS, France) had presented an overview about applications of the supercapacitors in the transportation field. In his presentation he represented a model of a supercapacitor and also, he made a lot of tests and standardization considerations for supercapacitor s parameters. After coffee break Daniel Fodorean presented Hardware Implementation for the Control of Hybrid Systems in Automotive and Abdellatif Miraoui presented Fuel cells and their applications on vehicles together with his collaborator Dr. Philippe Blunier (Bellfourt (?) University, France). The last presentation of the day was made by Prof.dr. Eng. Anca Duta. Tailoring Energy Storage Capacity in Lithium Ion Batteries. The presentation was very comprehensive and well appreciated by all participants and raised a lot of constructive discussions. At 1 pm all the participants had lunch at Piatra Mare Hotel and after lunch were transferred at Sinaia to visit the Royal Castle. After the visit of a castle the participants were transferred to Brasov for dinner at the restaurant (7 to 10 pm). Fourth day, The day started with the presentation of Vít Brslica (UoD, Brno, Chech Reoublik) at 8:30 am, Plug-in hybrid vs. Battery operated vehicle : results of a detailed study about the state of the art of the application of batteries and supercapacitors in vehicles. The second lecture was hold by Joao Martins & Paul Borza (UNINOVA University, Portugal and Transilvania University, Romania), titled Supercapacitors in stationary applications. This lecture enabled an exhaustive image about stationary applications of supercapacitors with a special focus to Renewable Energy Sources. Before coffee break Piotr Boguslawski & Eugeniusz Lowiec (Gdansk Branch of IEL, Poland) presented Progress in developing SC based compensator for network disturbances and they brought to participants the image and principles of active filters that use supercapacitors and their performances and advantages. After coffee break Gabriel Chiriac presented his course about Accumulators for vehicles an image about the mechanical storage devices and their applications. These presentations were followed by Donal Murray (Ireland), who presented Wave energy a possible result of the future, an interesting presentation about the new wave generators and potential of wave generation in Ireland. The lunch started at 2 pm at Piatra Mare Hotel and was followed by the presentations of Prof. dr. eng. Paul Borza, Bionic creativity engineering toward combined energy cells with batteries, fuel cells and supercapacitors and of Catherine Ansbro, Market opportunities for supercapacitors in Ireland. Peter Hall has organised a Parliamentary Debate on The Best Route to Carbon Free Energy. The intensive and interesting debate was followed by

8 the voting by the ESR`s about the future of different technologies future and argumentation of their opinions.
