13 COMPLEMENTARY TO PUBLIC TRANSPORT Last mile transportation Uber is a reliable transportation option and complementary to other solutions in Johannesburg (e.g. Gautrain), all with the objective to reduce the need to own a personal car. Public transportation becomes much more attractive as an option when it is complemented by flexible and affordable last or first mile solutions such as Uber. Especially since final destinations are often not located next to train or metro station. Ridesharing serves less accessible areas The data collected of our operations in Johannesburg shows that the Uber platform is not only used in the centre, but also in more remote areas that are often underserved by public transportation.
