2 GLOBAL CHALLENGES The smartphone has emerged as the most important urban mobility invention in public transport and as operators we are ignoring it at our own peril The rise of e-haling, car sharing and ride sharing are challenging market dynamics especially for the AirRail market App-based on demand transport implies that a commuter s travel demand can be met real time not linked to any fixed routes and time tables Mobility as a Service (MaaS) brings together multiple modes in a single app or interface inclusive of routing, timing and payment options

4 TRUTH WE HAVE TO FACE: On-demand public transport offers choice to the commuter. Will they still CHOOSE the AirLink as preferred mode of transport to and from the airport?

5 Background to Gautrain Gautrain is an 80 km rapid rail transport connection It has 10 stations which Include Hatfield, Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, OR Tambo International Airport, Rhodesfield, Marlboro, Sandton, Rosebank and Park It is consisting of three services: - North-South general passenger service running between Hatfield and Park stations. - East-West general passenger service running between Rhodesfield and Sandton stations. - A dedicated Airport Service running between Sandton and OR Tambo International Airport stations. The East-West and Airport services are operated with combined train sets that serve both services but with dedicated cars for the Airport service. The Gautrain railway network is integrated with the PRASA network at Hatfield, Pretoria, Rhodesfield and Park stations There are 36 DFDS bus routes available; 125 buses operate on 430 km Gautrain bus routes & 7 Midibus routes with 14 midibuses (22x seaters)

6 GAUTRAIN CHALLENGE Proliferation of gated communities Low density residential developments Medium-high density developments are located beyond a walkable distance from the stations and or bus stops Safety concerns Uber vs Metered Taxis AND BIGGEST CONCERN OF ALL: Last two years drop in airport ridership

7 OBJECTIVES FOR FMLM SOLUTION Increase the ridership of the Gautrain System, especially the airport link Promote integration of public transport at Gautrain stations Increase utilisation of public transport Identify gaps & future public transport / Non- Motorised Transport (NMT) projects Increase accessibility to the Gautrain system Reduce the current high usage of private vehicles Ensure safety of commuters

8 RATIONALE FOR FMLM SOLUTIONS Recent spatial investments around Gautrain stations warrants the Gautrain Management Agency to ensure connectivity between offices/residential areas and stations New economic nodes that falls outside the existing Gautrain system and its feeder services have been developed There are several facilities that can be used as park & ride Gautrain passengers walk and/or cycle to the stations; however, safety and convenience a restill a concern

9 FMLM SOLUTIONS Park-and-Ride facilities Bus shelters with bicycle racks & kiosks Construction of sidewalks & cycling lanes Provision of more space for drop & pick up zone at stations to accommodate various modes of transport Establish partnerships with E-hailing & Tuk-Tuk service providers Bicycle sharing scheme Implement Feeder & Distribution services through Midibuses Target areas: Medium-high density residential areas, recreational/shopping centres & industrial and office parks
