CONIGITAL Intelligent Transport Solutions for High Traffic people destinations

Domestic transport emissions account for around a quarter of UK greenhouse gas emissions. Air pollution causes 40,000-50,000 early deaths a year in the UK

Its Getting Worse Congestion is a problem for UK Cities, traffic growth in the UK is accelerating at an unsustainable rate and expected to increase up to 55% between 2010 and 2040.

It s not just Cities, High Traffic Destinations such as Airports are growing at 5% each year

Airports are bursting at the seams.. and are seeking sustainable, environmentally friendly Park and Ride solutions to deal with the congestion And it s Big Business Last year Car Parking resulted in Heathrow turning over 107 million in 2015, an increase of 8.1% the previous year

What we do? We work with POD manufacturers and partners to develop the next evolution of Driverless Park and ride solutions - Built on Heathrow's proven POD technology Keynotes@

Heathrow Airport : Park & Ride: PODS Electrical Driverless PODS that utilise a Guidance Track for navigation Transported 1.5 million passengers over 3 million kilometres Car Parking revenues for Heathrow of 107 million in 2015 and increase of 8.1% the previous year Zero-emission transport system Saved 70,000 Bus journeys, the equivalent of 100 tonnes of CO2 a year.

Next Generation of Driverless Pods in Birmingham Streets Insight Project: We are part of a consortium to trail Driverless Pods in Pedestrianised Streets and roads in Birmingham. State-of-the-Art Sensors & Control for low speed autonomous shuttles in pedestrian areas Pedestrian Footfall at pavement level Air Quality measured at pavement level AV Fleet Management & APl for 2way data merge shuttle dispatch & update with sensor data & content delivery Value of Project Insight Contract: 2.2 million Insight Consortium Advanced 4D Vehicle Interface for the Visually Impaired input & journey info Ring & Ride App for the Visually Impaired call & journey information Trials in city centre pedestrian areas passengers & pedestrians VISTA & CCD Sensors Bluetooth Sensor

Total Driverless Market in UK by (KPMG Report) Total Market Value 51 Billion Create 320,000 Jobs Save 2500 Lives High Traffic Destination Airports, Shopping Centres, City Councils, University Campuses

Climate Impact Assuming Electrical Driverless Pods will be used for last Mile solutions Assumed worked example: CO2 emissions to travel a journey in Birmingham City Centre of a mile will result in 0.06kg CO2 emission from the Metro, 0.2kg emission from a car or taxi and 0.12kg from a bus. The autonomous pod would have zero particulate and other noxious gas emissions associated with fossil fuel vehicles. A news article published in the Independent (July 2015) stated that: an analysis of the amount of greenhouse gas emissions per mile showed that autonomous electric vehicles used as a fleet of driverless taxis would by 2030 have emissions that are 90 per cent lower than a current petrol-driven private car. Heathrow Business Car Park to T5 - saves 70,000 bus journeys per year, equivalent to saving 100 Tonnes of Carbon Emissions into the environment. Last Mile Solution 0.12kg CO2 from BUS Zero Particulate Emission Electric Fleet 90% lower emission's than Petrol Driven Car 100 Tonnes of CO2 per year

UK: Great place for trials UK Department for Transport Code of Practice published in 2015 Motorized vehicles not generally permitted on footway Experimental Road Traffic Order and bespoke signage required Private areas require separate permissions

Nobody expects a pod Pod characteristics Max speed 24kph (15mph), average ~10kph (6mph) Mass: 525kg Environment Small spaces Many vulnerable road users, not expecting vehicle Pod awareness Sound emitted from vehicle when moving LEDs potential to communicate intent Horn (if required) Team is in contact with local disability groups Working closely with MK Council duty of care

Bespoke safety case needed Based on ISO and layers of protection Key learning points to date: Steering reliability critical to reducing risk Requirement to record distance travelled and time in both automated and manual mode Negative obstacles need particular management Always trained Safety Driver able to take control Automated Control System Safety Curtain Base Pod Safety Driver Marshalls + Trials Manager

Safe trials are a team effort Roles identified for trials Safety Driver, Trials Manager, Marshalls, Communications Manager Log of who is fulfilling each role for each trial Contingency plan lists responsibilities of each role in case of different types of emergency Emergency services Informed local police of operations Invited local fire service to view pod and ask questions First responder information sheet circulated Recovery company engaged with ability to retrieve pod from underpasses

Local public onboard Project has started manual driving with marshalls Generally positive (or no) reaction Hand out leaflets about project to those interested Local stakeholder event held Representative survey of UK and Milton Keynes residents: 78% of adults in Milton Keynes had heard about the project 23% nationally 61% of adults in Milton Keynes would be interested in using pods 39% nationally

Learnings still to come No rules of the road in shared spaces Wide variety of users Foliage and other objects can obstruct path Underpasses produce high contrast in lighting conditions
