28 Our history. 28 It was with the conviction they could win that Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher laid the foundations of AMG in Together, they optimized engine power and dedicated themselves to customer sport. They were soon competing against strong, established racing teams and, in 1971, won their class at the legendary 24-hour race of Spa with the AMG 300 SEL 6.8. This made the letters A, M, and G famous around the world.
