Itʼs about re-thinking the concept of mobility from scratch and so, too, about re-inventing the Mercedes-Benz brand. The task of reducing the consumption and the emissions involved in driving a car is one that impacts upon the future of our planet. 7 I find the whole subject extremely complex; starting with the fact that there are two drive systems. Why is this necessary? To maximise efficiency. In town, or over the first few metres, the plug-in hybrid allows you to drive in all-electric, locally emission-free mode and thus extremely quietly. Over longer distances, or when more power is needed, the vehicle switches over to the combustion engine. An intelligent engine management system works of its own accord to select the ideal combination of combustion engine and electric motor, juggling energy and range to be as efficient as possible. If you prefer, you can however switch manually between the operating modes. All the drive systems (combustion engine, electric drive system, boost and recuperation) are at your disposal and are automatically deployed in the most economical way possible according to the driving situation and the route. Used for all-electric driving the battery must be sufficiently charged. The charge level of the lithium-ion battery is maintained so that it can be used for subsequent all-electric driving. The combustion engine is used to recharge the lithium-ion battery while on the move. Electric operation is not possible in this mode.

9 Charged with engineering excellence. Driving with a plug-in hybrid from Mercedes-Benz is not only more efficient, but also more convenient. Lots of ideas have made it possible to put the drive system of tomorrow on the road today. Anticipatory efficiency. The intelligent engine management system automatically provides a more efficient type of mobility. Its strategy not only adapts to the batteryʼs charge level, but also to the traffic and the road ahead. There are also four operating modes and three drive programmes (Comfort, Sport, Sport+) for anyone wishing to regulate the hybrid interaction themselves. Boost for added dynamism. Switching in the electric motor briefly boosts the combustion engine. During acceleration, the boost function delivers additional power and an extra shot of torque. Coupled with the intelligent engine management system is what is known as a haptic accelerator pedal. This helps to achieve a more efficient driving style by passing quite noticeable impulses through to the driver. It will, for example, indicate that you should take your foot off the accelerator or give you a signal to switch the combustion engine on. Braking good for energy. Energy is produced during braking and coasting which, in a Mercedes-Benz plug-in hybrid, doesnʼt just disappear, but is fed back into the traction battery. The principle behind this: recuperation. Thereby increasing your range or giving you extra boost. Gliding mode. In what is known as the gliding mode, the engine is completely switched off and decoupled in order to save even more energy. The vehicle continues to coast, without the drag losses of the combustion engine.

Alongside the Standard Services, services such as Route Planning, Charging Information and Pre-Entry Climate Control also come as standard with Mercedes-Benz plug-in hybrid vehicles. The Vehicle Status display of the Mercedes me App keeps you up to date at all times with the current charge level and your range. Once your vehicle is fully charged, you will be automatically notified. You can also control the available charging settings and the Pre-Entry Climate Control system.
