The compact machinery leaves more space for a larger car and, with no more need for a machine room, it frees up space for other purposes such as storage. Although many older residential buildings have narrow lift shafts, thanks to its excellent space efficiency the KONE MonoSpace can be installed in about 80% of buildings in Europe. The car size can be increased in 10 mm increments in order to make the most efficient use of the available space. Opened in 1919, Metro de Madrid keeps the city on track, serving 47 million commuters every month, from six in the morning until 1:30 at night. Covering 293 kilometres and 300 stations, the subway is the eighth longest in the world, and its rapid expansion over the past two decades places it among the world s fastest-growing rail networks. Making sure Madrid s main artery remains in running condition is a challenging task handled by a team of KONE specialists.
