8 Solar Questions What Will Increase Payback Periods? Is Solar Worth it? Is solar worth it? The short answer is 'yes' and the slightly longer answer is 'of course it is - absolutely!'. 9 Solar Questions How Does Solar Work? We all know that solar panels gather energy from the sun but how exactly do they work? In nutshell, when ultraviolet rays from the sun hit a solar cell, those particles of light knock electrons free from atoms which generates a flow of electricity. This electricity is either used by a source, stored in a battery, or distributed throughout an electrical grid. It s Snow Problem Natural Cooling The winter time can actually be very beneficial for your panels as the cold and the snow act as a natural cooling system for the wiring. FUN FACT: Because snow is just frozen water, on a sunny day your panels will gather more energy as light particles refract off the snow. Snow and ice will temporarily accumulate on your panels, but will quickly melt off on a sunny day. You can also buy solar roof scrapers from your local hardware store that extend up to 10 metres to brush off any snow that is sticking to your panels. Shorter Days UV Rays As mentioned above, snow and ice will quickly melt on a sunny day, but what about if it s -40 degrees Celsius? Brush tools and the angle of the panels will help remove the snow, it s also removed thanks to the sun s UV rays which warm up the panels and melt the snow. However, under the Net Metering program in Ontario, you can still offset your Hydro costs in the winter by using your stored Grid Credits.

18 Net Metering Ontario s Solar Program The solar program available to solar customers in Ontario is called Net Metering. This program is being used all over the world. Net Metering allows you to offset a large percentage of your yearly Hydro costs, resulting in you saving thousands of dollars every year. The program utilizes 4 factors to benefit the home or business owner and the utility company. 22 Federal Green Tax Rebate Depreciation of Assets/Canadian Taxes Under current income tax regulations, a portion of capital costs is deductible through what is known as a Capital Cost Allowance, or CCA. Generally, CCA deductions are scheduled according to the class of equipment and are calculated on a declining-balance basis where the taxpayer s first year CCA is generally limited to less than 50% cost deduction and the balance of the undepreciated capital cost is subsequently written down over the life of the asset. Simply put, accelerated CCA front-end loads the deductibility of newly acquired assets and allows the business to harvest those tax savings to redeploy elsewhere, including other qualified assets, in the early years of the new asset s life. Investing In New Clean Energy Equipment Under Class 43.1 and Class 43.2 in the Canadian Income Tax Regulations guide, businesses have the ability to immediately deduct 100% from qualifying clean energy equipment which allows a business owner to maximize tax deduction in the first year for immediate redeployment within their business. This means that if you were to purchase a solar system from Switch Energy, your business would be able to write down the asset in the year that it is put into use. 26 Cost Benefit Analysis Table 2 Lower Hydro Bills That is not to say that those with lower Hydro bills do not save those in Table 2 are still saving hundreds of dollars each year and tens of thousands of dollars over the lifetime of their solar systems. Only those who consume less than 100 KWH of energy each month would not financially benefit from switching to solar energy. (See Appendix A.2 for full details)

In Ontario alone, the average cost of Hydro is expected to rise from $127 per month in 2017, to $193 per month in 2027, a 52 percent increase.
