GO GREEN WITH SOLAR POWER GO GREEN WITH SOLAR POWER
Presentation: What s New With Solar Power? Oak Hill Country Club, Meredith New Hampshire September 15 th 2016 Solar Photovoltaic (PV) or (Electric) Frase Electric, LLC Sandwich, New Hampshire Office: kim@fraseelectric.com Website:
Frase Electric, LLC Frase Electric has installed OVER TWO Megawatts of Solar Energy since 2009! With OVER 275 PV jobs completed to date.
SOLAR 101: How does solar work? 1. Solar panels convert sunlight into DC Electricity. 2. An inverter converts DC electricity into AC Electricity. 3. You use the energy you need in your home. 4. Any surplus energy is sold to the grid.
What is Net Metering? The ability for excess energy (banked) from a solar array to be sent back to the grid and the consumer getting FULL retail credit for it (except for NHEC customers).
Present Net Metering (All Power Companies except NHEC) The meter will spin backwards when an array makes excess energy during the day and at night or cloudy weather it will spin forward as you buy energy. Typically we design systems that will produce as much KWH as the customer uses in a year.
Net Metering for NHEC ONLY NHEC net metering is different than other power companies. Exported power is sold back to NHEC at 3.3 cents less than what the retail rate of electricity is at the time. In this case the KWH is not banked the NHEC gives you monetary credit. The credit can also be used to pay the $28.00 monthly service charge.
Future Net Metering (All power companies except NHEC) Future Net meter = UNKNOWN The legislature is deciding what the future of net metering will be. I assume it will be similar to what the NHEC Net Metering policy is at best. If you are thinking of installing PV you should install it in the next 6 months as the program will be less beneficial.
Group Net Metering The ability for a host facility to install a large array to not only offset their electric use but the electric use of others. The host receives a check from the Power Company for all the excess power exported to the grid at retail rate. The members are co owners of the array and receive a check from the host for their excess energy that the host produces. This is VERY complicated, especially with commercial jobs and how it affects rebates. The host is the only one that receives the rebate. The host and group members make a contract between themselves on ownership and distribution funds. The members will still get their monthly electric bill from the power company. * This is the concept of how it works but its not the mechanics of how Group Net Metering works.
REC s Renewable Energy Certificates Created from every megawatt hour of electricity produced by a solar generator (panels). REC s are sold by an aggregator, typically around the wholesale cost of electricity (.05 cents/kwh). Similar to Carbon Tax: Polluters purchase them to help offset their carbon footprint Its political and may not be around forever.
Tax Incentives Federal Tax Credit = 30% total cost of the installation. Good until 2019 After 2019 it steps down: 26% in % in % after 2023 Tax credit can be extended over a few years if your tax liability isn t as high as 30% of the cost of the job. There are many interpretations on how to apply the tax credit. Please consult your tax advisor.
State Rebate RESIDENTIAL $.50/Watt up to 5,000W to a max of10,000 Watts Capped at $2,500. COMMERCIAL $.65/Watt or 25% of the cost of the job Up to 100 KW and capped at $50,000. NHEC also has rebates. Rebates are taxable. Tamworth, New Hampshire (30) Sun Power 250 Watt = 7.2 KW This house won Honorable Mention for the Home Builders for energy efficiency (Heat Pumps and Solar PV)
Owning vs. Leasing Best Option: OWNING The best way to purchase your solar panels: Cash Home Equity Line Why leasing isn t a BRIGHT idea: Your savings will be modest You lose control of your roof Leasing can scare off home buyers
Consumer Report: A Look At What you LOSE by Leasing
Builders: Integrating Solar PV into New Construction ROOFS: For roof mounted arrays face a large section of roof as close to true south as possible. No dormers, skylights or vent pipes on this roof. Roof pitch 9/12 is ideal but any pitch will actually work. The flatter the roof the more issues with snow. For Standing Seam roof s be sure they are rated for mounting solar panels.
Builders: Integrating Solar PV into New Construction Site needs to be free of shade from 9am 3pm all year round to get the best results. It s a good idea to have your electrician run a ¾ inch or 1inch EMT from the attic space of the southern roof to the electrical panel location for future instillation. If the roof doesn t work, a ground mount is a good choice. There will be a REC meter needed for the installation so some prewiring for that may make sense. Pizza Barn, Ossipee NH (122) LG 320 Watt panels = 39 KW
Solar and Battery Storage Hybrid solar array with battery backup and generator. Tesla Powerwall Sonnan Battery storage 90 KWH of stored battery power.

Environmental Benefits of Solar Energy Solar electricity contributes 96 percent to 98 percent less greenhouse gases. Fossil fuels contribute to global warming, air pollution and water pollution. Solar energy creates local jobs here in the state and in the country instead of off shore. By investing in solar energy, you can help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels in favor of one of the most abundant, consistent sources of energy we have available: our sun.
SOLAR FACTS In 2015 $47 Million was invested in solar installations in NH, a 341% increase over the previous year. In 2015, NH installed 16Megawatts of solar electric capacity, ranking 24th nationally. Solar energy is the most abundant energy resource on earth 173,000 terawatts of solar energy strikes the earth continuously. That s more than 10,000 times the worlds total energy use! Today the demand for solar in the United States is at an all time high! The total U.S. installations may reach 3,300 megawatts this year, putting the country on track to be the 4 th largest solar market in the world!
