2 Commodores Comments With great sadness I begin this report with the news of the passing of two well-known members of our Club. On the 24th January I attended the Celebration of the Life of John Stacey at the John the Baptist Church in Boldre. There is an Obituary for John later in the Cruising news. The very next day Jane and I attended the Celebration of the Life of Sophie Beeton at the All Saints Church in Milford-on Sea. Both services were so well attended by all who knew and loved them both. Many of you will have known Sophie as the lovely wife of our Sailing Secretary, Alastair. You will also have been well aware of her battle with brain tumours, first diagnosed in November Sophie passed away peacefully in the early hours of 12th January I will always remember her for all the love she had for our Club. She loved her sailing with Alastair in all the competitions. She was an absolute joy to be with on RIB duty handing out all the biscuits when she got you back on your way after capsize. She was always there to lend a hand when her other duties as a Councillor at NFDC allowed her time to pursue her love of the water both on and below with an aqualung. There was a beautiful Obituary published in the Lymington Times and I do urge you all to read this if you can. It showed how busy she was in the community both in Milford on Sea and the larger NFDC. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to meet her and get to know her. As we approach or AGM I will take this opportunity to remind you of up and coming important dates for your diary. There will be an opportunity for you to come and quiz your Flag Officers on Friday 16th February. The Q and A will begin with a presentation from Nigel Walbank, our Rear Commodore Sailing, on the sailing programme at the Club both in the past year and the future. This will be followed by Paul Braye our Hon Treasurer on the financial

3 standing of the Club. I will then give a short review as to where I see the Club progressing e. We look forward to seeing you at 6pm in the evening. The AGM itself is on Saturday 17 th March again at 6pm sharp. Please keep your eyes open for the paperwork for the meeting itself. Apart from the usual items on the Agenda there will be some new rules to be adopted regarding the General Data Protection Regulations that become effective on 25 th May There will be other important documents published on the web site regarding this legislation. There are vacancies for members to join our Executive committee. Nomination forms are available from the office and online. I see with great pleasure the Perisher series run by Simon Ward is now underway. While we have had some very indifferent weather I believe the attendance has been very good. If you haven t been out yet I urge you all to dust off the cob webs and get out there on Sunday mornings. Thank you Simon for all your hard work in organising the event. Another important date for your diary is the launch of the Cruising Programme on Friday 23rd February starting at 6pm. This is the forerunner to the first Cruising supper of the year. Make sure you book you place online for this event and see the programme that has been assembled for the coming sailing year. As you may well know I will be stepping down as Commodore at the upcoming AGM. It has been a privilege to be your Commodore of LTSC and I sincerely hope you all support the new Commodore when he takes office on the 17th March. Happy Sailing in 2018 Rick Underhill

9 Sadly, our oldest member of the club. Mr. John Stacey passed away during the very first hour of Having reached the tender age of 95, he leaves his wife Pat and there two very capable offspring s, Nicky and Nigel. Often referred to by his friends as Mr. Pimm s we know of no maker of such a beverage who could even pretend to compete On board Hi-tec for some ten years his lunchtime antics were always well received and on more than one occasion, with the help if his dear wife Pat, sufficient to satisfy the thirst of some ten crew! Thank you, John, for always being the gentleman, we will for ever remember you.

12 Lithium Battery Developments A battery developed by researchers from Northwestern University and Argonne National Laboratory uses iron and oxygen to provide a high capacity device with multiple applications. The rechargeable lithium-iron-oxide battery can cycle more lithium ions than its lithium-cobalt-oxide counterpart. Lead researcher Professor Christopher Wolverton said :- The fact that it actually works is remarkable. The team noted that iron has not been applied successfully in batteries to date and the fact that oxygen is used to help drive the chemical reaction was expected to cause the battery to become unstable. Using computational calculations, the team discovered the right balance of Lithium, iron and oxygen ions to allow the oxygen and iron to simultaneously drive a reversible reaction without allowing oxygen to escape. Not only does the battery have an interesting chemistry because we are getting electrons from both the metal and the oxygen but we are using iron, that has the potential to make a better battery that is also inexpensive. Importantly, the battery-said to be fully rechargeable- starts with four Lithium ions instead of one and the opportunity to cycle all four back and forth by using both iron and oxygen to drive the reaction is described by Prof.Wolverton as tantalising. 13 Distance Cruising We are currently in Port Louis Marina St. Georges Granada having sailed down from St. Lucia via Bequia during the week. We left Rodney Bay at on Wednesday morning and arrived in Port Elizabeth Bequia on a mooring buoy at 17.00, pontoon to buoy in ten hours, 70 miles covered. A nice solid Trade of 16 true on the beam all day. After a day on the beach and a bar or two we overnighted again and left at for Grenada, again a lovely Trade carried us down to St. George s arriving at 15.00, another 70 miles but done in 8 hours! At times we were beam reaching at up to 14 knots boat speed in 19/20 knots true carrying full sail. hence an average of 8.75 knots for the passage! All that scrapping and expensive anti-foul was well worth it. I have recruited a very friendly and fun crew from three different ARC boats that arrived in St. Lucia, one Italian, one Dutchman and a Brit. but we have to get one of them back to St. Lucia for a flight home on the 1st. so will be returning via Union Island, Bequia and Marigot Bay (St Lucia) next week. 16 Consortium plans to build and fly a hybrid electric passenger plane. Siemens, Rolls Royce and Airbus have formed a partnership to develop a partly electric powered passenger aircraft as a step towards a new generation of commercial aircraft with hybrid electric propulsion. By 2020, they are planning to fly a testbed aircraft in which one of the four gas turbine engines will have been replaced by a 2mw electric motor. This plane, to be called the E-Fan X hybrid-electric technology demonstrator will probably be based on a Bae 146 aircraft. Once it has proved itself, a second gas turbine could be replaced by another electric motor. The E-Fan X is an important next step in our goal of making electric flight a reality, says Airbus chief technology officer, Paul Eremenko. We see hybrid-electric propulsion as a compelling technology for the future of aviation. The demonstrator will explore the challenges of high-power propulsion systems such as thermal effects, electric thrust management, altitude and dynamic on electric systems and electromagnetic compatibility issues. The aim is to push and mature the technology, performance, safety and reliability, enabling quick progress on hybrid electric propulsion. Siemens will supply the 2MW electric motors and their controls, as well as the inverter, DC/DC converter and power distribution system. Rolls Royce will be responsible for the turbo-shaft engine, a 2MW generator and power electronics, while Airbus will be in charge of integration as well as the control architecture of the propulsion system and batteries and its integration with flight controls. Airbus and Rolls-Royce will also work together to adapt the aircraft to accept the electric motor. Drivesncontrols.com
