Failure is indicated by a relative rapid discharge of the on board CR123 battery requiring frequent replacement. If your SIM is less than a year old please consult Davis or your retail supplier for a warranty replacement. NOTE: The following procedure will void your 1-year warranty and is only recommended after the expiration of the warranty period. NOTE: By no means do we claim that this is the best method for supercap replacement, but we find this to be the easiest method and is probably best for people not experienced using a soldering iron.

2 2 Tools Needed: Small flat head screw driver Small exacto razor (best if it is dull. It is used as a wedge, not for cutting) Small Phillips head screw driver Soldering Iron Solder Performing the Removal: Decommissioning the Weather Station for Repair Put the console in Setup Mode before performing the transmitter removal. Remove the sensor suite from its fixed location and take it to a safe location to do your work such as a workbench. Removing the Transmitter Board and Back for Repair or Replacement 1. Unlatch the rain cone from the senor suite by rotating it counter clockwise. A one inch rotation should unlock the tabs from their seated position

3 3 2. Lift and remove the rain cone out of the way and set it aside to expose the rain spoon mechanism. The rain cone is removed in order to have easier access to the transmitter back and clip.

4 4 3. Remove the Sensor Interface Module (SIM) front housing cover and disconnect all the plugged-in jacks. 4. Route the jacks out the bottom left port

The clip will need to be forced up in the direction of the green arrows by

5 5 5. The rear view of SIM box below shows the clip that needs to be removed in order to free the SIM and back cover from the sensor suite 6. The clip will need to be forced up in the direction of the green arrows by manipulating pressure points at the location and direction of the red arrows below.

6 6 7. To do this, place the palms of your hands at the top pressure points and your fingers underneath the clip at the bottom pressure points as shown below. With GREAT force squeeze your fingers toward your thumbs and palms. 8. With enough force the clip will pop out of place and the transmitter SIM will be free from the sensor suite.

7 7 Removing the Supercapacitor 1. Now that the transmitter is out remove the four screws circled in red:

8 8 2. Remove the white cover and note the supercapacitor circled in red which is subject to replacement:

9 9 3. In order to access the supercapacitor it is best to remove the PCB board from the rear clam shell. The compression wedge must be removed using something similar to this technique: Once the compress wedge is free rotate the antenna up

15 15 4. Discharge the existing supercapacitor in a safe manner (it is likely dead already if you are following this guide). Now remove it by clipping the leads as close to the body of the supercapacitor as possible

16 16 5. Physically remove the supercapacitor such that its existing leads remain intact in the PCB board:

17 17 Installing a new Supercapacitor 1. Tin the Leads on the board with a soldering iron and solder, while noting the positive and negative lead locations: Take note of the positive and negative lead on the new supercapacitor:

18 18 2. Put the new supercapacitor on the PCB board aligning the (+) and ( ) leads accordingly 3. Solder the new leads to the old leads

Someone not experienced in soldering on the PCB board will typically damage the soldering pads and thus rendering the board inoperable. By simply leaving the original leads in place and soldering the new supercapacitor leads to the old leads, many generations of supercapacitors may be removed and installed without worry of damaging the PCB board.
