Presenter Mr. Debi Prasad Dash Director, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) Customized Energy Solutions 2
India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), launched in 2012 IESA Member Companies Awareness Initiatives Business Growth IESA Objectives Policy Advocacy Promote ESS in India Assess ESS Market Potential Objectives: To promote Energy Storage Solutions in India Assess the market potential of Energy Storage Solutions (ESS) in India Brainstorming with various key stakeholders, on policy matters Raise awareness about ESS in Indian industry, government and power sector To assist ESS technology, product, services and system integration companies to strategize and grow Global strategic Partners driven by its vision to make India a global hub for deployment and manufacturing of Energy Storage & Microgrids 3
Role of Energy Storage in Indian Grid Energy storage could play a key enabling role in every aspect of modern grid including Generation, Transmission, Distribution and at Customer Premise (including electric vehicles)
Solar bid trend Solar +BESS? The range of winning bids have been declining in the last couple of years except for the UP, 215MW tender. There are no more outliers amongst the winning bids. The solar + BESS SECI tender is proposed at 4.43/kWh plus VGF (max of 1Cr/MW).
Challenges in Renewable Integration Source: Dr. Michael Milligan NREL / AWEA : Dr. Jay Apt, CMU 6
Case Study on Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Island Solar generation is inherently intermittent and supply may create very large instantaneous ramps. The problem will be accentuated in islands like Andaman and Nicobar, where currently diesel generators are used for providing base load as well as balancing service Island is dependent on diesel generators as primary source of electricity and balancing power, where solar variability is a major issue and opportunity for energy storage integration.
Expected All India Camel Curve (with 100 GW of solar generation) This duck curve is the proof of solar industry s ability to meet early afternoon peak power demand, opportunity to prove storage industry s value during fast-ramping periods, and shows the challenges faced by utilities due to the strain in the grid

Evolution of India Grid Frequency Control India Grid Frequency 2011 India Grid Frequency 2015
Grid Balancing Services Consumers have no ability to resolve the grid frequency on their own. In a synchronized grid this has to be managed by grid operators. India can address a significant part of the frequency issues by allocation of flexible resources hydro, gas based generation and EES. IESA is leading efforts for promotion of the ancillary services market by actively engaging policy makers, central electricity authority and other key stakeholders. Last year IESA released a report outlining the roadmap for adoption of EES for grid frequency regulation.
Smart Townships and Cities Indian Government is working on developing 100 Smart Cities. 20 smart cities are already identified for initial funding In addition over 300 Ultra Modern Townships with 5 50 MW of peak demand could drive need for storage in India. 12

Energy Storage Technologies: Performance characteristics Cycle life The number of discharge-charge cycles the battery can experience before it fails to meet specific performance criteria (Normal EOL criteria is 80% of initial capacity). Cycle life is estimated for specific charge and discharge conditions. Depth of discharge (DOD) The percentage of battery capacity that has been discharged expressed as a percentage of maximum capacity. A discharge to at least 80 % DOD is referred to as a deep discharge.
Common Terms Energy It is the total energy stored in the system and can be made available for any application at the rated power. Measured in Wh, kwh or MWh. Energy It is the total energy stored in the system and can be made available for any application at the rated power. Measured in Wh, kwh or MWh. Roundtrip Energy Efficiency The ratio of energy discharge energy and charge energy of the battery. It is always less than 100% due to internal losses. C-rate It is a measure of the rate at which a battery is discharged relative to its maximum capacity. If the entire battery capacity is discharged in 1 h the c-rate is 1C, if 2 h it is C/2. Power The maximum rated power at which the system can be charged or discharged. Measured in kw or MW and depends on the size of the system and the prescribed C-rate. Duration The discharge time at rated power from the upper state of charge limit to lower state of charge limit as specified for the application State of charge (SOC) An expression of the present battery capacity as a percentage of maximum capacity.
Future Advances in Energy Storage PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT Flow batteries boast of an exceptional cycle lifetime but have a much lower roundtrip energy efficiency as compared to lithium ion batteries. Lead acid batteries have high efficiency and low cost but their cycle lifetime is very low compared to other technologies INNOVATIVE materials and cell design improvements which can enhance the specific properties of respective energy storage technologies will play a crucial role in making the technologies attractive for rapid commercialization. 19
