2 2 Hydraulic Cylinders Bosch Rexroth INTRODUCTION The accompanying list of the more common fire resistant fluids is for your use as a reference in identifying a specific fluid as to the type and viscosity. This list is not to be construed as an approval or acceptance on the part of Racine Power that these fluids are recommended for use in components of our manufacture. Detailed information pertaining to physical properties may be obtained from the fluid supplier. Within each general classification or brand of fluids, there may be a considerable variation in fluid formulation and quality. Consequently, it is suggested that when using certain components or types of fluid, the customer consult the factory for specific recommendations based on the application requirements. Information on the use of high water content fluids can be found in Racine publication S- 128, Facts About. For further information regarding the changeover and use of fire resistant fluids, it is recommend that the customer obtain ANSI Standard B (R1988), Practice for the Use of Fire Resistant; s in Industrial Hydraulic Power Systems. This standard is available at a nominal cost from the National Power Association, 3333 N. Mayfair Drive, Milwaukee, WI RECOMMENDATIONS In addition to observing specific recommendations of viscosity, temperature, filtration, seal selection, maximum pressure, drive speed, and flow, the following table should be used as a reference in determining the suitability of a fluid for use in a particular type of pump. This classification includes fluids such as phosphate esters, phosphate ester/hydrocarbon blends, organic esters and other fire resistant industrial fluids. It does not include synthetic fluids such as Skydrol or Aero-Safe, which are formulated for use in aircraft hydraulic systems. 2. High water content fluids include micro-emulsions and water soluble synthetics which contain up to 95% water. Factory 3. Pump must be equipped with journal bearings. 4. 3 Bosch Rexroth Hydraulic Cylinders 3 Viscosity: When using spring governor, Silentvane, radial piston, or gear pumps, the fluid viscosity should be maintained at the same operating levels as when using premium grade hydraulic oils. The specific viscosity recommendations are detailed in Bosch Rexroth Publication , Petroleum Hydraulic s. The only deviation from these recommendations is applicable when using water-in-oil emulsions, which are non-newtonian. In other words, when passing through small passages or when exposed to conditions of high shear, such as are encountered within pumps, the viscosity drops to a value lower than that indicated by laboratory viscosity tests. In general, almost all water-in-oil emulsions have a viscosity of from to F under conditions of shear. These viscosities are within our recommendations. Twinvane pumps have the capability of operating on conventional lubricants as well as the high water content hydraulic fluids which have viscosities approaching that of water. Temperature: It is desirable practice to limit the bulk fluid temperature to a maximum of 120 F. Higher temperatures will cause excessive rates of water evaporation when using the water containing fluids as well as, in some instances, the loss of the more volatile inhibitors. Higher fluid temperatures in combination with poor fluid maintenance, can cause an acidic breakdown of phosphate ester fluids. Limiting fluid temperatures to less than 120 F also helps to prevent acid formation in the fluid. Most synthetic fire resistant fluids have viscosity indexes which are much poorer than those of petroleum oils. Consequently, small changes in the bulk fluid temperature can cause significant changes in the fluid viscosity. Inlet Conditions: All fire resistant fluids weigh more per unit of volume than petroleum oil. The higher specific gravity and higher vapor pressures of the water containing fluids will aggravate pump inlet conditions. Consequently, the inlet must be unrestricted, and the inlet vacuum must not exceed 3 inches of mercury. When using Twinvane pumps with high water content fluids, overhead or L shaped reservoirs are recommended. If the pump is mounted on top of the reservoir, the liquid level should not be more than 12 inches below the pump. Seal Compatibility: Buna N seals can be used satisfactorily with the waterglycols, water-in-oil emulsions, and the high water content fluids. Viton generally must be used when synthetic fluids are utilized as the hydraulic media. Viton can also be used with the water-glycols, emulsions and high water content fluids except in shaft seal applications on water glycol which should use a Buna N shaft seal. Filtration: Filters should be selected on the basis of the type of fluid being filtered, giving consideration to proper micrometre ratings, filter types, capacities and compatibility. In general, a 10 micron return line filter will provide satisfactory protection for systems operating in typical industrial applications. Inline suction strainers are not recommended for hydraulic systems containing Bosch Rexroth pumps. If strainers are used, make sure they are no finer than 60 mesh (238 micrometre) and rated at three times pump outlet flow. A coarse screen having 1 /8 inch diameter openings should be used with Twinvanes that are mounted above the fluid level. WARRANTY Our normal warranty against defects in material and workmanship applies when our equipment is used with the fire resistant fluids. This warranty does, however, apply only to product defects and does not constitute a guarantee on our part against very rapid and accelerated wear of pumps when using fluids of questionable quality.
