PT6A-196 EFFECTIVITY All Cessna 208 and 208B airplanes DISCUSSION The purpose of this service letter is to transmit Pratt & Whitney Canada S.I.L. No. PT6A-196, Removal of Mobil Jet 254 from the approved listing of lubricating oils. S.I.L. No. PT6A-196 has been issued to notify operators that, effective January 20, 2013, Mobil Jet 254 oil is no longer approved for use in PT6A engines. The transition from Mobile Jet 254 oil must occur via a gradual, top-up method rather than with the drain and fill method. A sudden change by the drain and fill method to a different formulation lubricant can cause leaks in seals that are conditioned to the previous lubricant. The slow introduction of the new oil by the top-up method will reduce the chance of leakage. Operators who currently use Mobil Jet 254 oil in their airplanes are advised to begin the gradual transition to a different approved oil as soon as practical. 3 SERVICE INFORMATION LETTER S.I.L NO. PT6A-196 Subject: Applicability: Removal of Mobil Jet 254 from the approved listing of lubricating oils. All PT6A engines This Service Information Letter (SIL) is issued to notify operators that effective January 20 th, 2013, Mobil Jet 254 oil will no longer be approved for use in PT6A engines. A lead time of six months is provided in order to give a time period to operators for conversion of oil type, if applicable, in their engines. Analysis has indicated that long term interaction of Mobil Jet 254 oil with the fluorocarbon-based elastomeric material AMS7276 (Viton A) at higher oil temperatures may increase the rate of seal degradation, which can result in oil leakage. It is based on this determination that Mobil Jet 254 oil use is no longer approved, and therefore, conversion to another oil type is required. The recommended oil change procedure is by attrition (oil top up method) as described in the applicable turboprop engine approved listing of lubricating oils Service Bulletins. Concurrent Requirements None. C. Reason To assure the use of approved engine lubricants and to recommend an oil change policy. NOTE: Major factors affecting oil deterioration with time are engine mechanical condition, climatic conditions, dust and sand ingestion during takeoff and landing mode and engine utilization. D. Description (1) To provide a list of acceptable synthetic lubricating oils for the subject model engines. (2) Oil to be mixed must be of the same viscosity and must be listed in this service bulletin. (3) Occasional or inadvertent adding of a different approved type II (Ref. Tables 2 and 3) oil during routine servicing of the oil tank does not require oil drain and flush. (4) Dilution of the HTS oils with a standard type II oil will reduce the performance of the HTS oil. (5) For engines with less than 100 hours since new manufacture or since complete overhaul of the entire lubrication system hardware, the top-off method is acceptable without any additional oil filter inspection or replacement requirement. (6) Engine oil is to be changed on condition. E. Compliance Pratt & Whitney Canada Inc. recommends that Compliance conforms to the requirements of the Accomplishment Instructions. Tooling - Price and Availability Not applicable. 3. Accomplishment Instructions A. The oils listed in Table 1 comply with this contractor s specification CPW202 (7.5 Centistokes). The oils listed in Tables 2 and 3 comply with specification MIL-PRF (5 Centistokes). These oils are fully approved for use in Pratt & Whitney Canada commercially operated engines of the models indicated. B. No other oils are approved for these models. Should the use of an oil not listed be desired, the intended user should contact Pratt & Whitney Canada, Customer Support Department, for consultation. C. Oil System Servicing NOTE: P&WC experience, over an extended period of time, has indicated that regular oil changes are no longer necessary for the engine models covered by this service bulletin. However, operators should be aware of the danger of oil contamination from extraneous matter such as hydraulic fluid, sand, etc., which would require the oil system to be drained, flushed and replenished with new oil of an approved brand. (1) Where operation will result in frequent cold soaking at ambient temperature of 0 Deg. F (-18 Deg. C) or lower, use of a 5 centistoke oil as listed in Tables 2 and 3 is recommended. (2) DELETED. CAUTION: DO NOT MIX DIFFERENT VISCOSITIES OR SPECIFICATIONS OF OIL AS THEIR DIFFERENT CHEMICAL STRUCTURE CAN MAKE THEM INCOMPATIBLE. (3) Should oils of different viscosities become intermixed, drain and flush the complete oil system and refill with an approved oil, following the maintenance manual instructions. (4) Should an operator wish to monitor oil quality, it is recommended that a program be established in collaboration with the operator s oil supplier/manufacturer. P&WC Proprietary Information. Accomplishment Instructions (Cont d) CAUTION: WHEN CHANGING FROM AN EXISTING LUBRICANT FORMULATION TO A THIRD GENERATION LUBRICANT FORMULATION (SEE TABLE 3), P&WC STRONGLY RECOMMENDS THAT SUCH A CHANGE SHOULD BE MADE WHEN AN ENGINE IS NEW OR FRESHLY OVERHAULED. (5) The term Third Generation is one that oil companies have used to describe turbine oils which have been granted the classification of HTS (High Thermal Stability) under MIL-PRF-23699F. Any oil designated as a third generation lubricant is still a Type II (5 cst) lubricant. All Third Generation lubricants approved for this engine, as described in Table 3, have been classified as HTS oils. (6) Change the oil by attrition based top off as follows: (a) Analyze the original engine oil for the following: v The Total Acid Number (TAN) must be less than or equal 2 mg. KOH/g maximum. v Kinematics viscosity (at 100 F) changes from -10 to +25 % maximum. NOTE: 1. Maximum: compared to the unused new oil of the same brand. NOTE: 2. Draining and replacing with the original oil brand is suggested if one of the above limit is exceeded. (b) (c) Ensure that, both the oil in the tank and the new candidate oil are approved type II oil to MIL-PRF-23699F specification and both brands are listed on this service bulletin. If replacing an oil listed as standard type II not Third Generation with another standard type II oil, do a visual check of the filter for carbon deposits then add new oil by top-off method. The original oil does not need to be drained and engine does not need to be flushed. NOTE: This also applies if replacing HTS type oil with another HTS type. (d) If replacing an oil listed as standard type II with another listed as High Thermal Stability HTS oil (or vice versa). The original oil does not need to be drained and engine does not need to be flushed. Proceed as follow: 1 Do a visual check of the oil filter for carbon deposits. 2 Start topping off the engine oil tank with the new oil brand. 3 Mark the oil tank with suitable label that identifies the new oil brand. Accomplishment Instructions (Cont d) 4 Inspect the oil filter at intervals of no more than 50 hours. Inspect for signs of loosening of deposits which may be in the engine from the oil used before. If debris and/or metallic particles are found see MM for instructions. 5 If a large quantity of deposits are observed (i.e. loose carbon deposits cover most of the oil filter surface and inside cavity of the filter housing), proceed as follows: a b c d e Clean the oil filter if cleanable otherwise, replace the oil filter with new one. Inspect the oil filter at intervals of no more than 50 hours. If the filter is not normal after 250 ±25 hours, notify P&WC field representative. Replace the oil filter with new one, drain and flush the oil system. Refill with fresh oil and continue filter inspection at 50 hours intervals. If carbon deposits are still found in large quantity, stop the replacement process and contact P&WC for further action. 6 If the oil filter is normal after 250 ± 25 hours, inspect again the filter at 400 ± 25 hours running time since conversion. If the filter is found normal return to the standard oil filter inspection and change intervals.
