See mission report 24, which actually covers two different missions on 13 July The Group, sometimes called the Tuskegee Airmen, deployed overseas for combat in 1944, originally serving the Twelfth Air Force. By June of 1944, it was reassigned to the Fifteenth Air Force and given the primary mission of ing heavy B-17 and B- 24 bombers on their raids from Italy into southern and central Europe. The Group consisted of four squadrons, the 99 th, 100 th, 301 st, and 302d Fighter Squadrons, and flew combat missions for the Fifteenth Air Force between early June 1944 and late April The Group was one of seven fighter groups serving the Fifteenth Air Force during that period. The seven fighter groups ed bombers of 21 bombardment groups. The bombardment groups were organized into five bombardment wings: the 5 th, 47 th, 49 th, 55 th, and 304 th. The 5 th Bombardment Wing consisted of the 2d, 97 th, 99 th, 301 st, 463d, and 483d Bombardment Groups. The 47 th Bombardment Wing consisted of the 98 th, 376 th, 449 th, and 450 th Bombardment Groups. The 49 th Bombardment Wing consisted of the 451 st, 461 st, and 484 th Bombardment Groups. The 55 th Bombardment Wing consisted of the 460 th, 464 th, 465 th, and 485 th Bombardment Groups, and the 304 th Bombardment Wing consisted of the 454 th, 455 th, 456 th, and 459 th Bombardment Groups. Only the 5 th Bombardment Wing flew B- 17s. All the rest flew B-24s. The Group itself served with the 31 st, 52d, and 325 th Fighter Groups in the 306 th Fighter Wing, which flew P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft. The 305 th Fighter Wing, which flew P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft, included the 1 st, 14 th, and 82d Fighter Groups. The Fifteenth Air Force rotated duties among its seven fighter groups. There were five bombardment wings and only two fighter wings. There were 21 bombardment groups and only 7 fighter groups. In other words, for every fighter group, there were three bombardment groups. There were always more bombers than fighters to them. bombers lost to enemy
