Philip Rosenthal PREFACE 1 HIGH-PERFORMANCE PLASTICS FOR MAXIMUM DEMANDS Continuous development that has distinguished HIPPE ever since the company was founded in Dresden by Erhard Hippe in But apart from the move to Hannover, one thing has not changed: our ambitious goal of producing plastics with only the very highest quality. In order to do justice to this goal, a new factory based on the latest industrial building concepts was built in Hildesheim near Hannover. This pioneering step and the rigorous investment in advanced processing technologies have helped HIPPE to become one of the leading companies for the production and marketing of high-performance plastics. The construction of our high-performance moulding plant plus R&D centre in Spremberg has provided us with a base for developing and manufacturing fibre-reinforced laminated materials with the very best quality. HIPPE sets itself a very clear target: 100% satisfaction among its customers. Close, constructive cooperation between our departments is essential if we are to supply those customers with the best quality at fair prices. Through our unconditional commitment we are able to supply not only a broad and interesting range of products, but also respond to specific customer requests concerning thermoset laminates, and find and produce tailor-made solutions for the industry. 4 2 COMPETENCE COMPETENT PARTNERS INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS HIPPE manufactures laminates and composites based on paper as well as on cotton, glass, carbon and aramid fabrics. Our sheets, tubes and cylindrical rods are produced with phenolic, epoxy, silicone, melamine, polyester and polyimide resins. And as we produce our own resins, we can supply tailormade products to our customers. With their outstanding expertise in materials, our engineers can turn your ideas into reality using the optimum plastic for your product.

The ever increasing complexity of our production methods calls for a precise synthesis of materials, processes and systems. HIPPE is one of the few plastics processing companies that also produces its own high-performance plastics and hence operates with an independent production chain that enables us to offer unique solutions from a single source. 6 4 SUPERLATIVE MATERIALS SUPERLATIVE MATERIALS Plastics are simply intrinsic to our daily routine. Although with basic elements of carbon and hydrogen their composition is simple, their applications and primarily the exceptional properties of these materials are manifold. Achieving such a wealth of different applications and different properties in other materials is impossible or at best very expensive. With their excellent properties, industrial plastics not only replace conventional materials, they also give rise to totally new technologies and solutions. Plastics are therefore vital to industry. Our thermoset laminates exhibit excellent electrical insulation properties, a high dielectric strength in particular, which makes them ideal materials for electrical applications. Thermoset laminates can be used for many innovative applications as safety products or parts with a low unit weight. Owing to their thermal stability, they are used in railway applications, for example, and their excellent resistance to chemicals is a great advantage in shipbuilding and the automotive industry. Furthermore, we can offer a whole range of new composites with outstanding physical and chemical properties which suit an ever broader range of potential applications. And their decisive advantages make them ever more crucial in the industrial production of heavily stressed components. Those advantages include low unit weight, high mechanical strength, high heat resistance, low elongation at failure and good vibration stability. HIPPE produces high-tech materials that comply with special customer requirements regarding inflammability, fire rating and chemical resistance as well as flame-retardant and low-smoke plastics systems. 10 8 Plants SPREMBERG: EXPERTISE AND THE LATEST PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY A new production plant with up-todate production and management facilities covering 8,400 m² was opened in And 2013 has seen us begin using the 5,000 m² of our new R&D centre for the production of glass-fibre-reinforced laminates. The synergy of a knowledge in materials that has grown over many years plus the latest technologies enables us to supply our customers with the materials they need in the very best quality in small or large batches and even at short notice. Spremberg has a century of experience and is one of Europe s leading producers of industrial laminates. One of the reasons for this market position of our Spremberg plant is the fact that top-quality thermosetting plastics with their own formulations have been developed in Spremberg since Producing our own resins in processcontrolled reactors and mixers using the latest batching devices guarantees flexible production geared to the needs of the market.

11 Plants 9 In addition, our formulation management provides the right conditions for consistent quality parameters. The further processing of these resin systems takes place on a vertical impregnation machine using the most modern thermal process engineering. The plant is equipped with graphic process control displays and together with the modern resin systems forms the foundation for our innovative product development. Our large complement of moulding machinery means that we are also able to offer special dimensions at reasonable prices in order to solve particular design issues. Combining the various substrates with the most diverse matrix materials plus selected additives is the answer to providing the optimum type of material for virtually any application. 12 10 Plants HILDESHEIM: PERFECT PRODUCTION A new plant was built in Hildesheim in 1985 a forward-looking move for our innovative production. The idea behind the entire factory design was to incorporate the latest industrial building, logistics, waste disposal and heat recovery concepts. Substantial and systematic investments over recent decades have provided the operations in Hildesheim with highly advanced processing technologies covering an area of 9,500 m². We have more than 120 machines: electronically controlled automatic grinding and sawing equipment, CNC mills, lathes and drills plus 6-axis milling machines with high-speed cutting. This plant undertakes the lathe, drilling and milling work for both one-offs and large batches from the simplest to the most challenging parts, with perfect repeatability and positioning accuracy. We are able to carry out all the machining necessary on even the most complex workpieces in just one clamping, i.e. from all sides in one operation from the very smallest products to parts with large dimensions, with maximum precision and the tightest tolerances.

13 Plants 11 We achieve this perfection with the expertise gained over many years and by using the latest production technologies, e. g. high-speed cutting, in conjunction with tailored machine tool technologies on our CNC machining centres. Our CAD/CAM system reflects the state of the art in programming and processing methods. Customers can send us their design data files directly, and machining in up to six axes simultaneously is possible. Highly advanced processing technologies: 9,500 m 2 production area and more than 120 machines.

Accreditation according to DIN EN ISO THE PERFECT SYNTHESIS OF PRECISION AND INNOVATION At HIPPE, the quality policy is based on an integrated quality control system. We have held DIN EN ISO 9001 accreditation for 20 years and maintain our standards through regular internal and external audits in order to guarantee our customers the highest level of quality for our products. Our laminates comply with international standards (e.g. NEMA, BS, MIL, NF, DIN, ISO, ASTM, UL), which is one reason for our leading position in global markets. The quality and precision of our products, likewise our capabilities, make HIPPE a leading technology partner worldwide. To ensure that our customers receive only top-grade products, our aim is quite naturally a zero-error quality. OUR PRODUCTS ARE ALL BASED ON EXTENSIVE R&D Our R&D department operates as a technology centre for the realization of your ideas. Optimum facilities here and in the laboratory enable us to analyse, improve and record all performance parameters so that we can guarantee reproducible quality. QUALITY IS A QUESTION OF ASPIRATION Through the close cooperation with our customers, we know exactly the conditions to which our products are subjected. That puts us in the position of being able to adapt product properties and adjust the production without delay. The end-to-end traceability of our products and manufacturing methods right back to the suppliers of the raw materials ensures that our production is transparent. It also guarantees a consistent level of quality that is recorded in the form of initial sample test reports and test certificates. All the standard and numerous special tests for mechanical, electrical and thermal properties are carried out in our laboratories using the very latest testing equipment.

John Ruskin QualiTY / Innovation 13 How our products react to fire is tested and classified by external, accredited laboratories such as UL, RST or Currenta. FINAL INSPECTION Every sheet that leaves our factory is a one-off, and a batch label ensures traceability right back to the raw materials. Verification of quality can be provided in the form of certificates of conformity. Extensive final testing of the finished part produced according to your drawings verifies the quality of the product. To do this, we use 3D coordinate measuring machines as well as calibrated measuring and testing equipment. CAD/CAM data files can be sent directly from our programming team to the measuring machine. All measuring and testing equipment is checked regularly and the annual software updates for our measuring equipment management guarantee the best possible quality assurance. The calibration of our measuring and testing equipment is recorded in test logs and our products can be supplied with the appropriate measurement/test reports upon request.

18 16 ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION WITH VISION ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION WITH VISION Active environmental protection is not an option for HIPPE, but rather a must. Continuous optimisation of processes allows us to reduce environmental impacts before they even take hold. That includes exceeding the requirements of Germany s emissions legislation: our thermal exhaust-gas scrubbing plants reduce levels of pollutants to values that lie well below the prescribed limits. In addition, intensive exploitation of existing heat sources enables us to cut the use of primary energy and thus minimize CO 2 emissions. Our plants have been approved and constructed according to the provisions of Germany s emissions legislation (BImSchG Bundes- Immissionsschutzgesetz). That also involved paying special attention to complying with the requirements of Germany s water management laws (WHG-Wasserhaushaltsgesetz), which prohibit chemicals being discharged into groundwater or public waste-water or rainwater systems. All mixers, reactors and tanks are located within bund walls built in accordance with that legislation and inspected by the TÜV organization. HIPPE regards protecting people and the environment as a socio-political obligation. So, in addition to the alternative energy and environmental management systems accredited to DIN EN ISO at both plants, we have set up an internal working group of engineers whose task is to implement environmental and safety stipulations in such a way that they exceed all the legal requirements.

24 22 Applications Rail Vehicles / Railway Technology / Plants and Machinery Thermoset bogie bearing insert Hi-form SSP 10 is a specially moulded thermoset laminate developed by the Erhard Hippe KG for the specific use as slide insert in Y25-bogies. It is particularly suitable for very heavy carriages and tank wagons because of the extremely high compressive strength, the elastic modulus and the sliding additives in the material. The bearing inserts have been successfully tested by the German rail companies. Hi-form SSP 10 has been in use for a six-year series since An authorization for the DB AG has been submitted. Material for ball bearing cages Hi-cage 2000 is a thermoset material which has been developed by the Erhard Hippe KG for the application as ball bearing cages. It is distinguished by an excellent machinability, a very fine woven fabric, a very small number of lints, a high dimensional stability and a high compressive strength parallel and perpendicular to laminations. Hi-cage 2000 is offered in the requested diameters and wall thicknesses. Support roller material Hi-roller 2000 is a cotton fabric laminate which has been developed by the Erhard Hippe KG for the special use as support roller for stranding machines. It has an extremely high compressive strength and a high elastic modulus, which is the most important characteristic for the use as support roller. Combined with a very smooth surface it minimizes considerably the danger of burnouts of the support roller. Hi-roller 2000 is available in the size 1,050 x 1,020 mm up to 310 mm thickness (as one solid piece), as raw disk up to a diameter of 1,000 mm or as support roller ready for installation.

27 Applications 25 Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Heat insulation sheet Hi-therm WD This material for high temperatures was developed from a glass fabric and a modified epoxy resin. It has a particularly high compressive strength that allows a considerable contact pressure. In the form of boards, this asbestosfree material is used as THERMAL INSULATION in the parting zone of moulding and injection-moulding tools. Its thermal conductivity is extremely low, which has a positive effect on controlling thermal energy. We can supply Hi-therm WD as parallel-face, ground sheets or as finished parts according to your specification. Construction material Hi-con 2000 is a thermoset construction material which has been developed by the Erhard Hippe KG for the machining of most complex structures. It is characterized by an excellent machinability, a high dimensional stability even at higher temperatures, a low water absorption and good electrical and dielectric properties. We offer Hi-con 2000 products as finished parts, machined according to your drawings.
